Hoped for more

I'd been watching for this documentary to be available for quite some time and finally found it on i-Tunes. If you like the Mojave desert, the cinematography will definitely appeal to you. Memories of family trips to the Mojave and Death Valley came back to me in a big way while watching this. Now why I docked 3 stars off the review: I tend to agree with xscabboyx's assessment. It took me about 30 minutes to tire of the townsfolk's interviews. The inhabitants were all interesting and seemed like decent people but the monologue style of the conversations kind of bogged down the movie. Perhaps narration would have helped. Having said that, the photography and musical score are excellent; I'd recommend watching Darwin for that alone.

Even though I gave it only 3 stars, I still liked this movie. Aiello, Archer and Jolie are all very good actors and they mesh pretty well in this. Biehn and Molina are caricatures and I wonder why. Well, no I don't. I blame the director. What could have been a very thoughtful film turns into a lame, sophomoric second half. Too bad; Biehn and Molina are competent actors but the cartoonish stuff blows. Oh well, Aiello and Asher are always good, Jolie is so attractive and sexy that were she more so the screen would explode. This could have been a much better film. However, the movie is photographed beautifully. I just checked the credits and it appears the director does nothing but TV series. This film should have gone to someone like Bogdanovich or even DePalma. Oh well.

Flow My Tears

I have read a great deal of Phillip Dick's work and was looking forward to seeing this. Hoo-boy, was THAT a mistake. The audio interviews of Mr. Dick were equalized/engineered so badly as to be unintelligible. The animated character that was shown during the audio interviews of Mr. Dick was at best laughable and at worst disrespectful. Mix the typewriter crap animation (mentioned in other reviews) with the cheesiest synthesizer soundtrack I have ever heard and you have a product that would drive Mother Teresa to walk into an orphanage with a fully loaded street-sweeper and open fire. This pathetic attempt at a documentary is almost criminal. Paraphrasing another reviewer here, it is a shame that one of the greatest writers of the last century gets this kind of treatment. Amen.
