The Great Escaper (2023)
An excellent experience
Enjoyed a wonderful film, with great acting performances from Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. It held a brilliant balance between humour and pathos and promoted positive values such as marriage. The interaction between the characters was excellent, with relationships with the younger generation mirrored at home and abroad. We also saw the frailty of human nature cleverly portrayed by John Standing. The horror of war was brought to life with action from the past and the scenes at the war memorial, and the whole atmosphere of the time was captured in this movie. All in all an excellent experience. Please produce more films like this.
Sanditon (2019)
Enjoyed every minute, well nearly...
The script does not have the wit of Downton Abbey, but we enjoyed every minute of Sanditon, well nearly every minute. We cheered when they kissed and booed when they were thwarted. The plot was simple, with some twists and turns and the characters were brought to life by some excellent acting. It seemed to suffer from a lack of investment in the outdoor scenes, but this did not spoil the enjoyment. It dealt well with the issues of the day and gave us hope for the future. Most of all it had a happy ending, with two marriages and possibly more in the offing. Wonderful entertainment. We need more of this on our screens.
The Gold (2023)
Brilliant series
Just finished watching the best detective drama series on TV in years. It was a good story, well dramatised, with great acting, particularly by Hugh Bonneville and Charlotte Spencer, but all the characters were so believable. There was a wonderful atmosphere, which captured the the time and the touches of humour added to the whole production. It brought back memories for those who lived through the robbery and subsequent investigation with all its twists and turns. I thoroughly enjoyed this brilliantly series, which bravely promoted justice above all else. Looking forward to a follow up series that will continue the investigation.
World on Fire: Episode #1.3 (2019)
Best episode so far
By far the best episode yet, as it concentrates on the main story and does not get sidetracked with peripheral issues.
The Favourite (2018)
Missed opportunity to make a great film.
What a shame the opportunity was missed to make a great film. All the ingredients were there with the rivalry, the idiosyncrasies (including ducks and rabbits) and great actors, yet it somehow managed not to be entertaining. Of course the score did not help. It sounded as though someone was trying to learn to play the violin. The pace was too slow and the right atmosphere was not created in order for the audience to respond to the witticisms and visual comedy. Here was the opportunity to play one favourite off against the other. At one time one of them could have been winning and the situation could have changed quickly to put the other in front, but it did not work. What should have been funny lacked timing and the pathos was lost by the unsympathetic characters. Did we have to suffer the explicit sexual scenes? Then there was the ending, if it could be called that. Left high and dry as the main characters pondered their past and future, but in a situation that was a big turn off. A bit like the whole film.
