John of God: The Crimes of a Spiritual Healer (2021)
Not great
Not to diminish the victims' ordeals, but I honestly expected a more nuanced and detailed approach to his case and at least SOME analysis of his diabolic abilities. There is basically no depth to this doccy whatsoever. Instead we get to see a lot of unexplained supernatural stuff going on, crowds of white-clad people bamboozled by his miracles and stories of then young ladies who couldn't refuse unwanted attention because of the undue influence he exercised.
Meh.
The Sinner (2017)
Season 3 best so far!
I was quite reluctant to start watching the series to start with. Having now watched the three seasons my opinion is different to the majority of reviewers, who by and large say the first season was the best, the second was ok, the third was a failure. To me the third season was the most captivating and intelligent - deep, brooding and heavy, posing questions most of us are afraid to ask or even admit we might ponder them. It was like a trip in someone else's head - a glimpse into something forbidden, into the mind of someone paying the price for testing the waters of maddness, of breaking the taboo. It was dark and satisfying.
All in all, I give 9 stars for season 3; 8 for season 2; 7 for season 1.
ITV Saturday Night Theatre: Catholics (1973)
It is NOT enough to call it a tale for it to be fiction...
The outrageous claims of the so called Vatican4 quietly materialise in our times as we speak, even though so far we've only had V2 (and it was bad enough).. In any case it is a great thought provoking movie, delightfully vintage, which can be seen as blasphemous only by those who haven't yet noticed the protestantisation of the Catholic Mass and of the Faith in general. All concerned by the direction of the post-concilliar church will sure appreciate it.
Novitiate (2017)
Shallow Catholic-bashing cliche - don't waste your time
I waited to watch this movie for quite a long time yet now, having watched it, I feel slightly sick in my mouth thanks to the banality, lack of accuracy, shallowness and complete misunderstanding of the subject of mystical love and religious vocation in the Catholic church. I regret spending my time on it. Not sure what was the target audience or who could benefit from watching it.
The only nice thing I can say about it is photography, thus 1 star.
