A Man Called Otto (2022)
So great. Such a great story.
Tom Hanks is great. But that's not enough.
This is a story that captures your spirit as you watch. Not predictable, and not gratuitous. You place yourself in his shoes and in the shoes of the other characters.
Absolutely the best picture of the year. You will be happy you watched it.
I did watch it on a plane, and I'd recommend watching it with your spouse, family, etc. Get some popcorn, dim the lights, and truly watch. Immerse yourself.
If you see a review with spoilers, do NOT read it. Don't watch the trailer. In fact, don't real any more - not this one, not another. Just watch it or add it to your must-watch list.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Loved it! How can a zombie movie be this funny?
This movie has it all: love, hope, drinking, friendship and it's all so stupid it's hilarious. Some of the funniest scenes you'll find.
My warning is: I watched it on a plane and laughed out loud a few times, so you might want to watch it somewhere where laughing out loud is a good thing.
It's got a romantic comedy bit. It's got gratuitous violence, but in a funny way. It's got a hero who isn't really a hero. It's the best British comedy since anything from Monte Python. It's got zombies (you knew that already) and it tells a story of how annoying it would be to be attacked by said zombies.
Don't read anything with spoilers. Just watch it.
Fall (2022)
Not bad for watching on a plane. Turn off your brain.
Cool concept & I really likes the main story - climb the tower and get stranded. You do need to turn off the brain however.
You want to send a text, but you're too high. You have a drone. What do you do? Ok, maybe the drone couldn't carry the phone? Ignore that.
You know every stat about the tower and bring a rope that's too short for any use. Didn't you think a longer rope ... no, never mind.
"Plugging in" the charger? Wouldn't that scene cause a short circuit ... never mind. Boy, she sure hung up there without nudging the charger for a long time. Never mind.
But, since I watched it on a long flight - fine choice. It was fine.
Welcome to Me (2014)
Comedy/drama with little comedy
This really looked interesting in the trailer, and we really wanted to like it. It started with a few pretty funny parts, but I was more struck by how little happened, especially in the second half. It wasn't boring as much as uninteresting. You know when you watch a movie and you find a hidden gem? This is not it.
Sound of Metal (2019)
Amazing. Watch it. The sound. The story.
I heard that this was the movie to watch and these recommendations were right.
The story was amazing. The sound in the film was perfection - enlightening, terrifying, mesmerizing ... perfect.
The other reviews and trailer give you a lot of info. What you need to know is: sit down and watch. Not in the background, no pauses - just watch.
A Bad Moms Christmas (2017)
Exactly what you expect, but less.
There are some funny scenes. However, some scenes (grocery store) are worse than a poorly written sitcoms. Sure, the mom's moms should be over the top, but so very over the top.
You expect it to be pretty stupid (check!) Gotta EARN that R rating (add more language!) Again, exactly what you should expect.
Honestly, for the terrible writing and horrible plot, the worse thing is the (VERY OBVIOUS) lessons we all learn at the end. Ugh... Should have timed it to warn others: once the lessons start, the bad wiring switches from humor to "let's all learn a lesson".
Play it in the background while you do something else. But don't sit down to watch it.
Yesterday (2019)
Great music, a lot of fun and original!
No spoilers - if you want to see it, just see it - don't look for details. It's really just fun, and we really didn't know what to expect. The music is great too!
I'm ending it here - just watch it.
Hall Pass (2011)
Zero laughs. Who wrote this? THE most unrealistic dialog ever.
First, I love a stupid movie - no lessons, stupid humor? All good. But this was horrible. It has to be classified as a comedy by process of elimination I suppose. However - zero laughs. Think you know how this scene turns out? Yes, you do. Plus, THE most unrealistic dialog I've ever heard. Who wrote this? Was there ANY consideration given to "would anyone say this in real life - ever?"
Laughs? Zero. Entertaining? Zero.
Left Behind (2014)
Love the books. Horrific move. One of the worst - maybe THE worst
It was fun reading the reviews - terrible acting, terrible effects. This was awful & I love the book series. I'm also Christian and know the premise. But as a movie? The worst.
Acting: terrible. Often monotone. So calm, unless someone needs to be hysterical; then someone is slightly animated.
Effects & the story - millions disappear- yet, traffic flows smoothly. Where are the wrecks? Planes should be crashing everywhere, yet things are neatly broken in an orderly fashion.
The end: you'll say "they would never have (this happen) because it would be far too cheesy." Yes, that will happen.
And the CONSTANT background soundtrack? WHY?
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016)
Surprisingly wonderful! Note - it's not a comedy
I remember seeing trailers and commercials for WTF. Turns out, they did one of my pet peeves: billed a serious movie as a comedy. It's not.
The movie follows the story of Tina Fey's character; the situations are real, the people seem real. Some reviewers thought it was satirical, or made a statement - I found it as realistic as anything I've seen on the news or anywhere else. It's just ... real, and because of this, it's really good. Tina Fey does a great job in a pretty serious role.
Considering it? Give it a shot. Just don't expect SNL or 30 Rock.
Fist Fight (2017)
Awful. If you're watching, it does not get better. I LOVE stupid-funny and this was terrible.
This cast - this should be amazing. We were hoping for 21 Jump Street funny. The critics hate it - that must be good, right? NO! But the trailer was funny? Yes, but the trailer was much better than the movie.
It's terrible. It really is. If you are watching it and just checked to see if there is hope - we watched it until the end for you. There is not. Give up and turn on something else.
Interestingly, a few of the high ratings here do not seem to have seen the actual movie; the 1- and 2-star reviews are right on.
And - could we possibly work in more f-bombs? I don't know if it's possible.
How do movies this bad get made and released?!?
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016)
Possibly THE worst movie we've ever seen; plot = f***bombs.
I can't believe we stuck it out. It was horrific. The plot was really bad: not just bad, beyond stupid - if you think you guessed the entire plot, you are right. The acting is terrible. Strangely, it really could be PG-13 easily - except for an amazing amount of language.
Have someone sit down with you and say f*** over and over for 90 minutes. Did you laugh? If so, go ahead and watch it. If you started and are just watching to see how it ends - guess! You're correct - now turn it off and watch something else.
Did anyone rate this higher than 1 star that watched it and wasn't paid or something? Gah - it's just so bad.
Six Days Seven Nights (1998)
Predictable? Of course. So very predictable.
Have you watched a movie and thought - this is terrible, but surely, it'll turn around?
First, the acting is fine and the storyline is fine. This is strictly a "nothing else is on... this'll do".
They crash. On an island. No concern about food or supplies. Emergency life raft? Yes! Oh no - comically, blown up in the plane - but undamaged! Food? A cute little beach picnic.
But I think - you need to draw the lines at 1) pirates who have an endless supply of ammo, yet are the worse shots in the universe. 2) Finding pontoons completely in tact? Handy. Gee, I wonder if they'll make it away from pirates shooting bombs at them - even with dramatic music? Your guess is correct.
The fact that there was no concern about actually crashing - hmmm...
How will it end? Yes, your guess is correct.
