60 Minute Makeover (2004)
If you don't have wallpaper in the UK you are living in a hovel!
Seriously, as an American this show is so much fun. People write in to get surprise makeovers for loved ones, and an entire crew comes in and tears down/throws out old stuff, then slaps some wall paper on the walls and calls it a victory. Besides the wallpaper, nearly every makeover includes a dressing table, mirrored furniture, brown striped or PINK carpet, and either a white leather Eames style chair or a "chaise lounge" that is the perfect size for a small dogs bed. Then the surprisee comes home and sees their wonderful "new" home. They are ALWAYS polite. The only way to tell if they hate it is if they say "this is amazing" quite a lot. If anyone in England ever tells you you look amazing-go change your outfit right away!!! People complaining about this show based on style are missing the point.
The Undoing (2020)
The last episode is the Undoing of the entire series.
This was a watchable show, but never one that held much suspense between new episodes. It has great talent in it, but the material itself is silly. Nicole Kidman roaming the city trying to escape notice while wearing a vivid burgundy full length coat on her 5'11" frame with her glorious red hair hanging loose was a common ridiculous element. At least put your hair up lady!
We thought we were watching a mystery thriller series. Instead we were watching interwoven character studies of people who don't feel "real" in any way. The only surprises are early in the story, and you are waiting for a stunning revelation that never happens in the end.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
The energy changes dramatically halfway in
The first 4 episodes of this show were amazing. Episode 5 has an interesting concept, but it's repetitive and extremely frustrating. Then episode 6 comes, and you expect the story to return to a more comfortable , engaging format-NOPE.
This is it now, it's a weird "what is going on, where are we now, why are we here AGAIN?" show. You get very bored and remember that some articles have said it's actually a "love story". Ok, which love story? Where? When? Oh no, why this AGAIN?
It gets less and less interesting as it drags on trying to be clever. There are multiple plotlines that are resolved in incredibly lame ways at the end-and others that are never explained at all. It is clear in the final episode which story line was the "love story", and that bit's romantic enough. I just wanted to finish watching the amazing show that was introduced instead of this imposter that took over in episode 5.
Trash Fire (2016)
Not funny, not scary
The trailers for this movie are fantastic. The movie itself is dull and humor less. I caught myself falling asleep 3 times. Trust me, I didn't fall asleep long enough to miss anything good-there was nothing good about this movie except the acting. The actresses who played the girlfriend, the sister, and the grandmother all did very well with the poor material they were given. Especially the actress who played the sister, even though her first scene was nonsense. The writer seems to be trying too hard to offend. But there is nothing here that anyone who would seek out this movie would actually be offended by. It's like Justin Beiber trying to act tough-but not as pitifully amusing. There are unexplained HUGE details that the characters literally don't notice-why are they there? The props guy just having his own fun, or poor editing of the final version? There certainly weren't time restrictions-they could have narrowed down the first 45 minutes of the film into a 10 minute set-up, then had more time to flesh out the actual "main" section of the movie. I feel like there was probably a better original vision for this movie that got lost along the way, and I'm disappointed for the actresses involved- they really did turn in fine performances.
