gives also a very optimistic view on illness and gets rid of this perpetual cliché of the retirement house

At only 38 years old and with only two full-length movies, Michael Noer gives a try to a complicated theme with an impressive maturity. Under the eye of the Danish director, the old age and the illness seem to look like a new woman. We rediscover the foolishness and the pleasures inherent to teenage years thanks to a very convincing duet of actors. The movie goes further comparing two ethic : a traditional one (the one of Lily's daughter) and Lily's who does not care about traditions and relies more on happiness instead of moral codes. Noer gives also a very optimistic view on illness and gets rid of this perpetual cliché of the retirement house, a place where old people are supposedly not happy. In the end, Key House Mirror, despite its classic structure, offers an outcome, a story and characters that definitely buck the trend of the stereotypical image we can have from such an environment and slice of life. With Key House Mirror, Michael Noer rises above the themes of its two previous movies and offers an emotional roller-coaster : a bit funny, a bit sad but always moving. Beyond its moral and its political complexity, this movie shows a deep human side that echoes the current situation of many countries

Based on Manuel Cerdán's book, that the director appreciated, "The Man with Thousand Faces" is inspired in true events. Even if the movie does not have the ambition of telling the whole truth about the biggest financial scandal in Spain, Alberto Rodríguez's film admirably reconstructs the events that could have happened. Even though the rhythm of the movie is unequal and there are some boring bits that do not affect the result, "The Man with Thousand Faces" has the merit of proposing a rich and varied cast and quite sharp dialogues. The voice-off, that is present all along the film, is used as a guideline and leads the spectator, making it easier to understand the events. Behind his will to swindle, hides a profoundly human being and it's maybe too late when he realises that he would have preferred to give priority to his family life rather than his fortune. Beyond its moral and its political complexity, this movie shows a deep human side that echoes the current situation of many countries. Ben X (2007)

It portrays a merciless world that constantly reject those who are different.

In his debut, Nic Balthazar skillfully mixes different social topics: addiction to video games, autism and also school bullying. Even though its scenes are sometimes excessive, Ben X is both a visual and a psychological punch. The video game universe provides Ben with a perfect shelter in which he finds the strength to continue living in real life. Also, this addiction will help him to do some discoveries and encounters. The many connections established between reality and the game are relevant. At the end, the film leads to wonder where the limits between reality and fiction are and it also shows that a video game can have both negative and positive consequences in the real world. Nic Balthazar cleverly mixes these two universes in order to get a hyperrealist and moving result that portrays a merciless world that constantly reject those who are different. For her first film outside Lebanon, Danielle Arbid chose to go to France with her camera. In the guise of a falsely autobiographical movie (the director has been living in France since she was 17), "Parisienne" speaks about the unique freedom that someone can feel when arriving at a foreign country. Nonetheless, the film shows as well the inherent trouble in integrating a new culture. Lina has to forget the codes she knows to learn and to give way to those of a city like Paris. The emotions displayed by the film are remarkably authentic: at the whim of the encounters, Lina will go from fear to curiosity, from disappointment to love, from loneliness to joy. She will learn to go beyond her fears and she will discover that we can dare, assert herself and say no but also give up and go with the flow. She will learn to love France while the spectator takes delight in discovering the Paris from twenty five years ago. Manal Issa's performance and the rest of secondary characters that surround her make the movie sensitive, moving and highly realistic. The Double Life of Véronique (1991)

"The double life of Véronique" is visually meticulous, sensitive and whose originality has lost none of its superbness

Released in 1991, "The double life of Véronique" helped Irène Jacob to forge her career as she won the Cannes Festival Best Actress Award thanks to her double role as Weronika and Véronique. The strength of the film lies in this omnipresent connection between the two women that look alike, feel each other's emotions and yet they have never met. Krzysztof Kieślowski, that tragically passed away five years later, created this masterpiece that marked his career : a wise mix of poetry, whose plot oscillates between dream and reality. The silences, the palpable emotions, the almost-buried memories, the constant distress feed this synergy between the two women. The whole movie excels thanks to the puppets' play, a real metaphor of the connection between the women. The yellowish photography, sometimes flirting with a well-polished sepia, enhances the emotions and the actor's glances. "The double life of Véronique" is visually meticulous, sensitive and whose originality has lost none of its superbness since its released. Into the Forest (2016)

The actors' awesome performance saves the boat from sinking.

The least we can say about Gilles Marchand is that he likes to mull over his projects: seven years passed between his "Who killed Bambi?" (2003) and the well-polished "Black Heaven" (2010) and six years later, he makes his come-back with this fantasy-thriller. In this new movie, Gilles Marchand travels to Sweden where the immensity of the nearly surreal scenery contrasts with the darkness that does not stop to infect this idyllic environment. The shots, that go from close-ups to extreme wide shots, help to feed this unease that we cannot grasp and that finally takes over. "Into the forest" took a commitment to suggest, raise doubts and leave leeway to some (maybe too much) interpretation and that is its strength, but also its huge weakness: even if we understand that some elements feed the fantasy, sometimes we feel that the plot has been built into a void that the spectators have to fill themselves. Technically speaking, the movie is quite original and the actors' awesome performance saves the boat from sinking.

Love Is Dead (2016)

The movie has the merit of bringing a fresh wind on the French comedies department, and that is no small achievement !

Who never had the will to avoid this delicate but yet impossible break up scene ? Despite being easy and radically cynical, it's needless to say that Eric Capitaine's new movie is also focused on something more serious: the creation of such a company can only come from a broken heart who is seeking to avenge, and why not while making money ! The duet of actors Benjamin Lavernhe/Elisa Ruschke is incredibly madcap and works very well. If the funny scenes take priority over the rest, especially with the different breaking up packages offered by the company, little by little, the ethics end up catching Mathias while his private circle starts to stick his nose into his business. From too much rejecting love, love ends up taking its own revenge. Break-up for everyone does not avoid a few pitfalls, like the underlying love story, predictable from the very first seconds, but still has the merit of bringing a fresh wind on the French comedies department, and that is no small achievement ! The Taqwacores (2010)

« The Taqwacores » does not only go against the flow, but it gives some food for thought

Even though Muslim punk exists since the beginning of the 80s, it was only in 2003 that this movement was known thanks to Michael Muhammad Knight's book. « The Taqwacores » is therefore based on this book and it was premiered seven years later. Even if the goal of the film is clear, that is showing the existence of this Muslim punk movement in the USA and the trouble in getting in, it hides some surprises and interrogations. Since the characters and the movie do not rebel without any reason, although the violence shown is sometimes too much, it is the consequence of an essential questioning of Islam. The power of the film lies in the director's decision of not taking the same path as other films dealing with religion. « The Taqwacores » does not only go against the flow, but it gives some food for thought: can we worship just a part of the Koran? That is, can we not just take all that is said for granted but also apply our critical sense in order to build our own faith? Can we reverse religious symbols and use them as we please? The film does not give any distinct answers and it does not mean to, but, thanks to some clever realistic dialogues and scenes, it suggests some ideas. And, at the end of the day, we do not ask for more but some ideas to encourage our thinking about a matter that should be better known. Night on Earth (1991)

After seeing this movie, you will never see a taxi in the same way as before !

Years before its absolutely cult "Dead Man", which stars Johnny Depp, Jim Jarmush carries out the crazy project of shooting five different taxi stories in five different parts of the planet. In addition to a dreamy casting for every single story, it is finally the profoundly human and realistic part that touches the spectator. From the hollow conversation in the first fare to the touching story of the last, passing through Roberto Benigni's unsuccessful confession (at the top of his art), each and every story mesmerises us with the help of the night atmosphere. Supposed to be simple night taxi stories, their symbolism and their poetry go beyond the setting they are set on. The diversity of the roles and the stories as well as the places and cultures, mixed with a desire of originality, transform "Night on Earth" into a cult movie that, despite its five stars cast, is too often forgotten. Big mistake because after seeing this movie, you will never see a taxi in the same way as before! Heart of a Lion (2013)

Can love save us from an extremist ideology?

Can love save us from an extremist ideology? That's the question addressed by "Heart of A Lion", four times nominated to the Jussi Awards (the Finnish equivalent of the BAFTA) in 2014. In addition to the actors' amazing performances (Peter Franzén is superb), the movie sensitively shows the trouble in having a normal life when we want to be an active representative to an ideology like nazism. Despite some tough moments and Dome Karukoski's accuracy to show how this extremely violent environment is, there is room for light in this Finnish movie. Little by little, Teppo finds his humanity and humbly realizes the limits of far-right ideologies that are indeed quite popular in Northern countries. Even though Finland is going to celebrate the first century of its independence, immigration is still rare and attachment to the roots and the national history are essential. Although the director says that "Heart of a Lion" could have been set anywhere, the story is the more legitimate and realist in Finland. This film sends us a beautiful moral: complicity, wiseness and reason can win against ignorance, exclusion and violence that, as shown by the movie, are synonyms of decay and degeneration instead of progress and growth. After Lucia (2012)

A pessimist but realistic and universal vision of the world, in which a simple action in the social media can make a durable impact in anyone's life

Awarded with the prize "un certain regard" at the Cannes Film Festival, Michel Franco's second film deals with a social problem largely present in cinema: school bullying in the digital age. The shooting and the framing, specially the fix off-camera shots, as well as the long silences, immerse the public into the deepness of Alejandra's emotions (superbly played by Tessa Ia). Rough, bitter and cold, the harassment scenes come one after another and we enter a kind of vicious circle in which freedom does not exist. Any type of rationality, understanding or communication are in vain in this compulsory contemplation of violence whose origin is unknown by the victim and, maybe, even by the aggressors. The lack of communication and the sobriety of the photography provide more realism to the movie. Finally, the long sequence shot at the ending enhances the beauty and coldness of the whole. With "After Lucia", Michel France offers at the same time a pessimist but realistic and universal vision of the world, in which a simple action in the social media can make a durable impact in anyone's life. Final episode of a trilogy that got started at the beginning of the 90s, Angelopoulos asks himself the same questions that the writer Samuel Beckett once did: how to end? And he adds a new precision that will make an impact in the final answer: how to end one's life when there is only one day left to live? It is when our time is limited that we paradoxically make the most of it and we understand this by witnessing Alexandre's trip between the past, the present and the future in the last day of his life. Even though he metaphorically travels through his memories, his present will to take the boy to the border gives him the chance to make a last good action before his death. The photography, that goes from cold colours for scenes from the present to warm colors for the flashbacks, is dazzlingly full of sobriety. The words from the letters that give this poetical Odyssey its tempo are so wise that they fill us with wonder. And when we finally get the answer to the question "Tomorrow, how long does it last?", we realize that Alexandre is ready and he is no longer afraid to die. "Eternity and a day" is a magnificent legacy of this director who passed away too early but who left us several masterpieces and awards. Night Train to Lisbon (2013)

Raimund Gregorius finds a new sense to his life thanks to the adventures of the resistance of that period.

Based on the novel "Night Train to Lisbon" by the Swiss writer Pascal Mercier, this film, directed by the Danish Bille August, offers an international cast with actors from the USA, the UK, Germany, Sweden and France. The historical context (Salazar's dictatorship and his Estado Novo) provides a particular background to the story as the public witnesses how Raimund Gregorius finds a new sense to his life thanks to the adventures of the resistance of that period. Through several encounters and beautiful flashbacks, we gradually discover Amadeu de Prado's life, the charismatic Portuguese doctor and philosopher whose story awes the teacher. The poetry of the film does not only lie in the words of this fictitious author, but also in the fondness that Raimund feels for this man about whom he knows nothing but that changes his existence. The warm colours of Lisbon (that contrast with the cold colours of Bern) and the different characters give the film a certain singularity. It is both in the past and in the present that Raimund builds his new existence that, to some extent, is similar to Amadeu's. But, concerning love, the teacher does not take the same decisions and he no longer finds his reflection in Amadeu, whose tragedy moves us profoundly.

Our Little Sister (2015)

Not dramatic nor a comedy, it's the movie's neutrality that is striking

Put aside a part of your clichés about Japan, the director Hirokazu Kore-eda immerses the viewer in the intimacy of three sisters whose personalities are way different. Their kindness leads them to welcome their half-sister whose existence was ignored by them. The photography, bright and refined, provides the movie with a goodwill whose secret is only kept by Japanese productions. Way more than a simple "feel good movie", "Our little sister" never falls into the pathos despite situations that would easily lend to it. Not dramatic nor a comedy, it's the movie's neutrality that is striking : scenes follow one after another without having a single impact on each other and yet, the camera's eye leads us to become infatuated with those four sisters that are learning to be happy together, each of them bounded by her own intrigue in the background. If the message can seem a little bit too bright, sometimes flirting with the gullible, we have no problem embracing this naivety, like during this beautiful biking scene where the blooming sakuras pass before our eyes. Butterfly (1999)

"Butterfly's tongue" is a movie that speaks about hope and whose universal message does not get old.

At the dawn of the second millennium, José Luis Cuerda undertakes the adaptation of two short stories from Manuel Rivas' book "¿Qué, me quieres, amor?". Despite a simple production whose sobriety always remains pleasant, the relationship between little Moncho and his old teacher is full of poetry. It is both the awakening of the boy and the wisdom of the teach that marvel us. The secondary characters represent other stories (based on Manuel Rivas' short stories) that gravitate around the main story and contribute some humour to the film as a whole. Nonetheless, José Luis Cuerda copes with the task of representing a historical drama from his country since the movie sends the public to the last years of the Spanish Republic (regime that splits the population), just before the beginning of the Civil War. The historical and political features accentuate the authenticity of the film and provide a realistic environment. In spite of the last harsh minutes, "Butterfly's tongue" is a movie that speaks about hope and whose universal message does not get old. The Summer of Sangaile (2015)

A movie about the anxiety and the beauty of overcoming our fears.

Even if she is from Lithuania, the director Alanté Kavaïte lives and works mainly in France so "Summer of Sangaïle" is the first film she shoots in her native country. Through the bright photography and the poetical shots, the film cleverly combines two story lines: the passion that is born between two opposite girls and Sangaïle's fascination and fear for planes. The chemistry between the actresses is blatant and we perceive it through the sublime contemplative shots and even if the plot is deliberately slow-paced, Sangaïle's evolution is charming. The clumsiness of some scenes and some easy story turns (such as the teenager that cuts herself) do not spoil the film, instead, they add a particular sensitivity to the bright atmosphere that witnesses the birth of this summer love. The scenery, between the lake and the landscapes that remind of Finland and the cold post-Soviet architecture, makes the film even more realistic and we understand that this duality exists not only between two different characters that get to love each other, but also between the anxiety and the beauty of overcoming our fears. Two Friends (2015)

Louis Garrel joins his father at the other side of the camera for his first long movie in which he offers a fresh vision of friendship through a crazy comedy. The duo Vincent Macaigne/Louis Garrel works perfectly and it makes the public laugh. Regarding Golshifteh Farahani, she surprises with her performance of woman that resists to the two men, but that still manage to break their friendship. They love each other, they fight each other (with a cast and a script that flirts with theatre), we are surprised but we never get bored. Louis Garrel evokes a serious subject with a certain cynicism: the fear to be left alone in the middle of a trio in which friendship is sometimes swallowed by love. Because three can be friends, but love is reserved for only two. Even if the films is not revolutionary, it is quite entertaining and it has some key scenes that make the public laugh and give them some food for thought. Kiss Me You Fucking Moron (2013)

The movie revisits the years in high school with no great pretensions and makes the public tenderly remember the period that marks everybody's lives.

With a storyline that reminds us the beginning of Glee (the football player that is forced to participate in the high school drama club and that finally finds his vocation), the movie takes the Hollywood stereotype of the teenage love between the popular boy and the outcast girl and refreshes it by adding a subtlety and a realism that will please both adults and teenagers. With a set of lights that perfectly represents the emotional roller-coaster of adolescence, the director knows how to combine the coldness of the landscapes with the warmth of the characters to offer a tale about friendship, perseverance and fist love. Even though the story is predictable, the characters are colourful, well- defined and do not resort to the drama or artificiality typical of other teen movies: we are not shown young people tormented by their past or overwhelmed by family problems, but boys and girls with the worries that are inherent to teen years so the spectator can feel identified with them. Something Must Break (2014)

"Something Must Break" brilliantly avoids the pitfalls inherent to LGTB films.

Even though there are more and more films about transgenders, "Something Must Break" (the title refers to a song by Joy Division) deploys arguments and a beauty that go beyond what we are used to see. Saga Becker performs brilliantly in this first role (no wonder why the director took two years to find her actress) that she plays with tenderness and melancholy. Despite a cold scenery and a gloomy Stockholm, the warmth of the characters and the intimacy that they build together has something charming and even magical. The camera focus on the bubble in which the characters live and it follows their evolution –natural but sometimes abrupt – on their quest to get what they desire. The purity from the tenderness scenes is literally mesmerising and "Something Must Break" brilliantly avoids the pitfalls inherent to LGTB films. Far from the colours and extravagance of Araki's movies, this movie is quite rough but still offers some crazy scenes, an insanity that stem from Andreas and Ellie's passion. Because we never know if this passion is made of love or not, but the director wants to make the viewer understand that the goal is not to know or to see it but to feel it. Love Is Blind (2013)

Poetical romance that turns into a frantic dramatic thriller

In a little known but sumptuous Estonia, we get to know Kertu, a fragile and shy woman whose everyday life is shown as the calm before the storm. It is the second character, Villu, performed by Mait Malmsten, who will turn this poetical romance into a frantic dramatic thriller. "Kertu" is an emotional roller-coaster that through an authentic story and the sober photography, plays with the feelings of the viewers, that are often surprised but never annoyed. This island, both splendid and oppressive, becomes a huis clos, a microcosm that troubles us and, by the use of flashbacks, we are shown a poetical night. It is quite difficult not to be caught by the tenderness of the glances and the close-ups that capture their charm. Each character acts as a catalyst for the other and brings out the best and the worst of each other. Between light and darkness, heaviness and subtlety, in its most bitter violent dialogues and ethereal silences, "Kertu" brings freshness thanks to a story worthy of an ancient drama.

Johnny Stecchino (1991)

A simple misunderstanding with a banana to criticize the Sicilian mafia

Years before his international recognition thanks to "Life is beautiful", Roberto Benigni notched up success after success due to a series of comedies that became remarkably popular in Italy. Johnny Stecchino is one of those forgotten gem and yet the Italian actor was at the peak of his art. Director and double-hatted actor in this comedy based on fruity misunderstandings (go figure!), Benigni leads the film by himself even though his loyal partner Nicoletta Braschi and Paolo Bonacelli help to give vivacity and rhythm to the film. Even if the humour is intentionally irreverent and it leads to absurd situations that draw a smile on the public, Benigni does not resort to mundane humour and he uses a simple misunderstanding with a banana to criticize the Sicilian mafia. A classic movie that, contrary to other comedies from the 90s, has won the race against time since it celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2016. Combat Girls (2011)

Women's role in the neo-Nazi environment

Even though many films have brilliantly shown the topic of neo- Nazism and its rise in contemporary society, Kriegerin ("Combat girls") focuses on the role of women in this environment. In the core of a strongly misogynistic ideology, women have to be twice as violent to impose themselves and find their own place. But it is not this exacerbate violence or hatred (even if it is realistic) that constitutes the strength of the movie, but the slowly change that takes place in Marisa thanks to an Afghan teen who she will help without really knowing why. Located in a cold economically fragile Germany, the boy will turn Marisa's life outside down. The symbolism of "a life lost is a life gained" is strong and the characters are colourful. The coup de grâce of the film comes from its poetry that is well-paced distilled and, between one aggression and another, manage to break through the film's cold colours, making it even more beautiful. Avé (2011)

Avé is a gem of Eastern Europe cinema

Through his own story, Konstantin Bojanov draws the realistic portrait of two young adults that seem to be the opposites of each other. The photography and the faint colours give a signature to the film and a sober character to these two destinies in distress that try to escape from their past to reach a blur and uncertain future. And kilometre by kilometre and lie by lie (each of Avé's lies more doubtful than the other), complicity between the two teens takes shape. The eye contact between the characters is delicate and singularly poetical in a gloomy Bulgaria where we are told the most melancholic story : the loss of a beloved one and the pursuit of oneself. In spite of that, the couple of actors radiates a certain brightness and warmth thanks to the magnificent static shots and to the slow rhythm that perfectly suits the film. Avé, under the appearance of an easy road movie, is a gem of Eastern Europe cinema, always keeping its sober and humble style. Famous underground road movie from the 90s

Famous underground road movie from the 90s, The Doom Generation is part of the Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy whose controversial side helped to build the director's career. Mixture of psychedelic colours and every sort of insults come one after another along with a shoegazy soundtrack (Slowdive, Lush, Ride…) and scenes from an off the wall world. And if we have trouble in guessing where Araki wants to take us and the message he wants to deliver, the viewer, as a real rubberneck, takes great delight in enjoying those gore, crazy and sexual scenes. This doomed generation is perfectly represented by Rose McGowan (her debut and best performance), James Duval (the director's all time favourite actor) and the loony Johnathon Schaech. This marginal trio rises like an opposite, shocking and attractive stance against the conservative and puritanical America that Araki condemns. If the reviews were lukewarm upon its release, the movie never stopped to raise its profile, especially thanks to his odd atmosphere, and finally became a cult movie. After an opening that shrinks the heart, "The Hour of the Lynx" shows how two opposed women try to help Drengen, a young boy played by Frederik Christian Johansen. Thanks to the slowly progression of the story, it is possible to notice the evolution in the character's emotions. Furthermore, the great use of flash-backs allows the spectator to dive into Drengen's childhood and to see the beautiful relationship between his grandfather and him as well as the unexpected change that turned his life upside down. Thanks to this movie, we learn that even the gloomiest stories could be illuminated by a ray of hope. Because even if the path is narrow, we all can try to become a lynx and find the twenty-fifth hour of the day when we can be happy, far away from the world that surrounds us.
