Interstellar (2014)
More than a film .
Interstellar.
You come into the film expecting a decent sci fi film and in the process , hope to know something a bit more about the void , but you come out having witnessed a grandiose yet heart warming story . The genre of the film easily comes under the banner of sci fi , but underneath the shroud of the opus and all the visual spectacle it provides ; at the core it is the story of the relationship between a Father and his Daughter which resonates with the viewer at a level which is hard to put in words. Rarely you will witness emotions pass through you as you see the credits roll for a sci fi film .How Mr. Nolan has so delicately woven a story with this level of Spectacle and feeling is a tale for the ballads . Supported by great performances from the cast ,a legendary score from Mr. Zimmer , beautiful visuals , Interstellar is a definite must watch.
Devasuram (1993)
Devasuram.
Devasuram is the best Malayalam film I have had the chance to witness as of yet . The film commands a certain aura of its own and perfectly strikes the cordial balance between what we so simply call as ' class' and 'mass ' . The characters so brilliantly written, the story told with utmost panache and the dialogues so written as onto the pages of the industry's history itself. Magalassery Neelakandan is probably the best character written for a Malayalam film and who better to portray it than Mr. Mohanlal himself who has given on screen a performance for the ages. The film easily holds its fort as a Golden Classic.
Iyobinte Pusthakam (2014)
Malayalam Film Industry's finest.
If this ain't on your watchlist, you are missing out on a ton.
Iyobinte Pusthakam is one of the finest crafted Malayalam movies in the industry's history. The film is a period drama set in a pre independence era focusing on the empires left after by the British after their occupation.
This flick focuses on the titular character of Iyob (Lal) who takes upon the mantle of Patriarch of the tea exporting empire left by a former British businessman.
The film takes its time in establishing its premises and characters. Cinematography and Direction is spot on. Casting is brilliant as Fahadh Faasil and Jayasurya gets into the shoes of their characters quite effortlessly and gives career defining performances.
The 3 songs felt completely out of place . Aside this the movie is one of the finest you will watch in this genre.
