Through the Wormhole (2010)
Why bring religion into a science show?
I wanted to give this a 10 before I watched it. I've still got to give it a 6, because it has some good info and cg. Otherwise, please keep "the controversy" out of a science documentary show. The only speculation, or alternative paradigm I am interested in hearing about should come from someone who is considered an expert in the field by their peers. It comes across to me a bit like there is some agenda to keep 'spirituality' relevant by always making it seem like what the scientists are really out there doing is trying to prove or disprove what some religion says. Certainly less than 1 in a thousand has that on their mind. And yet this doc seems to often throw religious belief as an alternate point of view when science doesn't have a solid answer.
Morgan Freeman's campy little stories and weak analogies gets trying, although I do love his voice.
Will eventually watch them all, but very disappointed.
Go On (2012)
A great new comedy - why all the hate?
If you're reading this then you already know the premise of the show. When I first heard about this show I had a hard time imagining how they would be able to pull it off as a sitcom, however after watching it all I can say is well done.
The cast does a great job and are very believable, especially considering there is almost no character development going on. Having watched the first three episodes I really hope that this show gets at least 2 seasons. I don't know that it has enough going for it to last beyond that, as at some point he has to get out of therapy, but I hope they give it the opportunity to play itself out.
For me, the true test of a comedy is not necessarily that it is funny for the whole 30 minutes (well, 21 minutes, damn commercials), but that it makes me laugh out loud. This show has provided me with a number of laugh out loud moments, and that is what I am looking for in a comedy.
Grimm (2011)
Gets Better and Better
The more I watch the more I enjoy. This is a fun series that has nothing specifically great about it, and yet for some reason I like it more each time I watch a new episode. Anyone who likes a twist of fantasy will appreciate this show. Great acting, fun sub-text...what more can we ask for? The characters are all well cast, and the stories, while simple, are all quite entertaining. Worth a watch if you're looking for something new. 9 out of 10 for me, based on the order in which I choose to watch shows (only watch TV online) - This show takes precedence for me, behind only psych (my fav) modern family, the middle, big bang, eureka, and how i met your mother. Seeing as how most of those are 30 min sitcoms Grimm has climbed it's way into my top 3 or 4, hour long shows worth watching (42 mins - damn commercials, how do you people watch TV?)
Sports Show with Norm MacDonald (2011)
What happened to Norm Macdonald
Wow - I used to love Norm Macdonald. When he was on SNL he was in my top 10 all time cast members, so I was quite happy to find this show. Now that I have watched the first 6 episodes, I wish i could erase it from my memory. It is bad...It is really really bad. In the first six shows I think I laughed one time. I was expecting a Daily Show type experience, except via sporting news. Wow, was I wrong. Ironically, the funniest part of the show is when Norm Macdonald isn't even on camera, but instead his 'nephew' is doing the roaming reporter bit.
It's not that the show is just a bit bad with some lame jokes - it is really bad with horrible jokes. I honestly believe that whomever wrote the other positive reviews and scored the show so highly must either a) work for the show, b) be a family member of someone affiliated with the show, or c) be Norm Macdonald himself.
Watch a few episodes and let me know what you think. I made myself watch the first 6 - trying to give him a chance to get his feet under him and get into the groove. Sadly it is now apparent that there is no groove, and that the writers on this show must be the cast off's from other shows like SNL, Daily Show, the Colbert Report etc.
If you currently are a fan of Norm then please do yourself a favour and skip this show. It will only make you feel sorry for the guy and start wondering if he was ever really funny to begin with.
Lawrence Leung's Unbelievable (2011)
Wow - this show is hilarious and educational - WATCH IT
One of the most entertaining shows I have watched in a long time. One part comedy, one part education and one part awesome (ok two parts awesome). If you are a true believer you will of course dump on his treatment of psychics, ghost hunters, etc. but the fact remains that he artfully and humorously explains and illustrates the social and psychological explanations behind the prevalence of the belief in the paranormal and otherworldly phenomena.
Are all of his "experiments" scientific? Not at all. Does it matter? Not at all. Does it illustrate the case that if you want to believe you will find a reason to believe, regardless of the facts? Absolutely!
This show is a must see. I hope Lawrence brings us more of his comedy and intellect. I had never heard of Lawrence before this show. I am now a huge fan and can't wait to see what comes next!
