Beyond the Mask (2015)
Good Swashbuckler
This movie reminded me of "The Scarlet Pimpernel." Lots of action, swordfights, improbable escapes, etc. Some viewers criticize it for historical inaccuracies, but who is foolish enough to go to the movies for their history? I thought the actors did a more than adequate job, and the photography and scene setting was good. Overall, it is amazingly well-done for an independently produced movie, and I wish it would get greater attention and viewership.
The locales move from the East Indies, to England, to colonial Philadelphia and New York. Historical characters include Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. The plot is somewhat convoluted but easy to follow and thoroughly enjoyable.
Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (2008)
Stein Makes His Point
The trust of Stein's documentary was not to prove or disprove Darwin's theory. His point was that any critical discussion of that theory that posits the possibility of intelligent design is ruthlessly suppressed. I believe he proves that tis true. There are many unanswered questions about how life began and how new life forms suddenly appeared after a period of stasis. And how does one explain the genetic code that controls how and in what form an organism is made. Science should be open to any possibility, bur neo-Darwinians exclude any discussion that would challenge Darwinian orthodoxy.
Outlaw King (2018)
Excellent, but should have been a mini-series to tell the whole story.
Well done historical saga with the feel of authenticity. Far superior to Braveheart. My only criticism was the way the writers seemed to conflate the Battle of Loudoun Hill with the Battle of Bannockburn. Edward II was at Bannockburn, not at Loudoun Hill. I suppose the screenwriter decided to combine the two battles for dramatic effect, but it wasn't necessary. Bannockburn took place.seven years later, led to the complete defeat of England, reestablished Scottish independence, and was Bruce's strategic masterpiece. As one rater wrote, they should have made this into a miniseries and gotten the story complete...
The Far Country (1987)
Which version?
My second review of this title. In reading other reviews it is apparent that some critics saw only an abbreviated version of the mini-series. Please, make certain that you get the complete version. It is excellent.
The Winds of War (1983)
Excellent series. One glaring factual error.
I regard WINDS OF WAR and WAR AND REMEMBRANCE, the sequel, as the two greatest series ever produced for television. I lived through those times, and the producer managed to recreate the spirit and feel of the age. There have been many who have criticized the acting, but I thought it more than adequate. Contrary to some, I thought that the actor playing Hitler in WINDS did a superlative job. I also thought Mitchum carried his part very well, though I saw him as 20 years too old for the role. Regardless of any casting or acting deficiencies, however, the sheer sweep and drama of the story carried all along. It's a magnificently told history lesson.
There is one factual error that has always puzzled me. In the conversation between Pug Henry and Bryon Henry just before dinner with the Roosevelts, Pug refers to the German battleship BISMARCK as if it were a pocket battleship. The BISMARCK was NOT a pocket battleship. In point of fact, it was the biggest battleship afloat at that time. Herman Wouk was an American naval officer in World War II. How did that error slip past him?
