Castlevania: Nocturne (2023)
Beautiful, action packed, hampered by terrible writing.
I really loved the first series as far as adaptation goes, back when Nocturne got announced I was stoked to see how they could keep the plotlines fresh. In this case, Nocturne is a beatifully animated show, with a few hiccups which don't retract from the experience, the sound is good, however voice acting ranges from good to fine.
As for story, this is where I'm conflicted, on one hand the plot is good and Erzebeth Bathory is a good pick for a villain, but... what the actual hell is up with the writing? Dialogues seem stiff, leaving little depth, they get so bad at times that it just took me out of the experience. With that said, I like Nocturne despite these issues, I hope that they will improve when the second season comes out, there's still a chance for it going from good to great..
1899 (2022)
Unique premise
1899 is a mystery serie about a crew on a ship that received a signal which they decided to go investigate, but not all is as it seem. This show is hard to talk about because it is one of those kind of stories you have to jump into blindlly without spoiling it for yourself. I really enjoyed the concept, it felt somewhat unique and different, even if there probably are hundreds of similar plots that lean towards the same route.
Acting was pretty spot on, great cast, but I wish that there was more backstory even if they left breadcrumbs that drive the characters reasoning to be on the boat.
Don't sleep on this show, if you got time to spare and have nothing else to watch, then dive right in.
Mad God (2021)
It's an artistic spectacle that won't appeal to everyone.
It's not often we get to see stop-motion used to create an hellscape envoriment that seem so alien to us. Mad God certinanly won't appeal to everyone, but that's not necessarily a bad thing either. This film portrays a world that is completely void of logic as everything is chaotic, mechanical and grotesque, everything is bloated, gritty and at the same time seem organic, mutated, so the title makes sense, it truly is a world created by a mad God.
Unfortunately, there isn't much of a plot to be found here, no proper dialogues or things to get attached to, you're just going through disjointed scene after scene that are beautiful as they horrific, it's all thought provoking and at times unnerving, I could easily have dismissed it as a successful art project made for a music video, but this isn't the case.
Don't take my review the wrong way, I thought Mad God was refreshing and it did entertain me with the creativity. It set out to do one thing and it succeeded, but I feel like I've been spoiled by films that rely on a grounded narrative to latch on, this film did the opposite, and that's really the point.
For what it's worth, this was 30 years in the making, the people who worked on this should be proud.
The Flash (2014)
The good, the bad, the ugly.
The good -
This show is something I would regard as the best depiction of the flash in live
action form, Grant Gustin is a very charismatic actor that fits the role of the hero very well, he sells the character, the side characters are also entertaining, the show is able to get into various of wholesome and enjoyable moments, even the quality of the show has stayed consistent for the span of three seasons, yes I said three. This is as much praise I can give the show and this comes from a Flash fan.
The Bad -
Oh boy, the show has become so safe and formulaic that it rarely tries to depart from what the previous episodes have done, it feels like the characters just make an 180 turn and suddenly their personalities contradict themselves, Barry is no different, as I mentioned earlier, Grand Gustin is an amazing actor, I can't blame the guy for the writing that puts him in contrived moments just for the sake of extending the needless soap drama, if I am to believe that these characters have grown throughout the span of three seasons, why are we repeating story beats and character motivations again and again? For each season there are glimpses of good moments, likeable characters and thought out ideas, but the execution just falls flat, it has become a mess.
The Ugly -
Season 7 is around the corner, one might wonder if the quality of the show will continue to stagnate or get a second wind, recapturing what made me hooked in the first place, I'm probably too cynical to think that it will ever be more than what it used to be.
