Party Dream (2022)
This Indie Rock Doc is the rare must-see
I saw the documentary "Party Dream" at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival and I swear to you it was more than just a great, fun, and inspiring movie. I loved it so much I bought it on iTunes as a pre-order. The band featured, "Gil Mantera's Party Dream," is so outrageously entertaining that at first I assumed this was a mockumentary with a band played by actors. But NO. The band is real and the music is great and the team that made this film tell the band's story in an amazingly entertaining and insightful way.
If you love indie rock that gives the finger to the corporate music industry, then this doc will not only entertain you but soon you'll be singing their songs around the house and downloading their music. Is that life changing? Heck yeah. I'm old. You know how often I discover new bands? Never. But in 2022 this doc helped me discover Gil Mantera's Party Dream and I will be forever grateful.
Jiyan: La vie (2020)
Breathtaking Film
What makes the film "Jiyan: La vie" so special? This film was made by a filmmaker who worked intimately with refugees and this experience inspired him to make a film about their lives. Yes, it is fictionalized, but in every way this story is true to life about the challenges that people face when forced to flee a war-torn nation. Yet the story is told with humor, authenticity, and even features a touch of romance. I personally cannot imagine a mature, intelligent adult not appreciating this breathtaking film.
Bone Cage (2020)
Great Indie Film
"Bone Cage" is a remarkably powerful Indie film. Brilliantly acted and superbly directed, you can add to the list wonderful cinematography that takes you into the heart of rural Nova Scotia. Based upon an award winning play, this film delivers exactly what Indie film fans love; an honest, authentic presentation of life in a world that rarely makes it to the screen.
I don't understand some of the hate in these reviews. If you don't like films about Real Life in rural towns and the struggles that they face, then stick to the Hollywood stuff.
Kringle Time (2021)
Indie Dark Comedy is hard to find
The reason that I love this film is that it accomplishes the rare feat of creating an exaggerated world of comedy and pain, resulting in dark comedy that somehow feels more realistic than imagined. Add to that mix a remarkable cast, excellent direction, and the independent spirit you get when a bunch of friends who work on others people's films for a living jump on the chance to do something for themselves, and "Kringle Time" is not a film that any fan of Indies should miss.
What? (2021)
Great Cinema!
What? Is a remarkable film. It is supremely entertaining, funny, and thoughtful, but it is also brilliant cinema. I make a point of calling this movie "cinema" because director Alek Lev has made a love letter to Hollywood's silent era while keeping it contemporary, fresh and entertaining. There is not one filmmaking element that the makers of "What?" did not use the fullest degree; cinematography, soundtrack, production design, and of course the brilliant acting.
And there's one more thing. What? Conveys a sober yet heartening message of inclusion for the deaf community, but it is so entertaining that it isn't a message movie. It's cinema at its best!
Borrelia Borealis (2021)
Creative, Original, and Lovely
Since Covid hit us in March 2020, I have seen a jillion indie efforts at the "make a creative film while trapped at home" genre. "Borrelia Borealis" overcame the challenges that lockdown presented with a massive dose of creativity. Writer, director and lead actor Kathryne Isabelle Easton knew exactly what might kill a "trapped indoors" film and she dodged every bullet. It is fresh, inventive, and beautiful to look at. If you enjoy indie film, then watch this movie.
The Seance (2021)
A Fun Indie Ghost Story
This film surprised me with its quality. It looks great, is well acted and directed, and by the end of it a total skeptic like me was kinda believing in the whole ghost thing. At least within the context of the film, supernatural moments are handled so well that they add to the movie instead of draw away from it like most ghost stories.
Congrats to the indie crew who pulled off this feature!
