The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
The most fun starwars show after Mandalorian season 1
This show might be my favorite show after Mandalorian season 1... its really alot of fun, kindof like a western... has the train hijacking, gang warfare and fun action and humor of the first season of Mandalorian... It develops alot of the world and various races of Tatooine in a fun way, like the kindof stories we imagined as kids with star wars action figures, where random no name figures were the heroes - bounty hunters and sand people and Jabbas pig guards and the rancor were like the heroes and villains instead of luke or han or the main characters... The finale is really epic! Its like an epic showdown between the town and the big badguys... That godfather like montage of everybody dying, it seems like the badguys will win... and then... ROOAR! Lol.
The Man in the High Castle: Fire from the Gods (2019)
Solid ending to a great show
This is a show that is about alternative realities, shows you what the world could have been if things had been different...
I get that some people are outraged by having the last minute of the show open up a can of questions, but my take is that it is essentially leaving the viewer guessing about the future...
The what if question is not about closure, but the point is that its happening every day in our real world... What reality we face is what we choose going forward...
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
My favorite starwars outside of the original 3
I think its better than the Force Awakens and the Last Jedi, and clearly better than any of the prequels... Its my favorite starwars outside of the orginal 3 and Mandalorian
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Epic episode, unbelievable 90 minutes of suspense
This was an amazing episode, different from Battle of the Btards , but just as well made with as memorable scenes... More fantastical.., Just as awesome.
Bright (2017)
Lethal Weapon meets Lord of the Rings... Hilarious and Awesome!
I knew nothing about this movie, just stumbled across it while looking for something to watch on Netflix... and I was blown away! I really enjoyed this movie. It's a really high quality sic fi action film - could easily be something you'd see in the theaters, with high quality special effects and action sequences and actors (which is why I was pretty surprised when I saw this movie with Will Smith in it, that I had heard nothing about, had never been in theaters - a netflix original...
Imagine Lethal Weapon - set in modern day New York, cops and gangs, etc., except the world has all kinds of fantasy races in it - Orcs and Elves, magic, etc. Imagine Elves (think Legolas) except they are dressed in black Matrix style clothes, carry machines guns and handguns and kicking ass like in a John Wu film... HILARIOUS AND AWESOME! Pure popcorn movie, but I would recommend watching this if you enjoy sic fi fantasy and pure action movies. The chemistry of Will Smith and the orc partner was great too, hilarious dialogue!
After I watched this movie, I was really surprised how badly the critics rated it. How is it that those critics got this so wrong? It honestly make me question whether a lot of those reviews are politically influenced by the studios - it feel like there is some kind of politics in Hollywood trying to shoot this movie down because it is a Netflix movie (not going to be released in theaters)? Are the movie studios and media afraid that Netflix could completely disrupt the model for movie distribution - the same way that it completely changed the way TV is consumed? For sure, if this movie had rave reviews, it would change the movie going landscape - an entire industry... But "Worst Movie of the Year"?? No way this movie was that bad... Honestly, it's better than most of the movies that are out in the Theater right now...
Okay, so is this movie a 9? It's definitely over 8 in my book. II watch a lot of movies, I recently watched the Shape of Water, Star Wars: the Last Jedi, Thor Ragnarok, and Justice League in the Theaters, and I honestly feel that Bright is more enjoyable that Star Wars, Justice League, and Shape of Water... Maybe runner up to Thor Ragnarok in terms of pure fun... Of course, those just happen to be the movies I watched recently - Shape of Water is of course a completely different kind of movie, but honestly, movies are supposed to be fun, an escape, and that's why I scored Bright a 9.
Godless (2017)
Epic Wonderfully Crafted Storytelling in the Wild West
I just binge watched the entire mini series. Awesome! If you like westerns, watch this!
Beautiful cinematography from the expansive landscapes to the details surrounding the human characters, the beautiful and majestic horses, the weapons (the attention to detail around the guns and gear of the different characters) really creates an immersive world of the wild west... The characters are well developed, with an amazing cast, and a story arc that reads like a novel... Like Game of Thrones, subtle details and events foreshadow other events that will happen, and the story unfolds... This is not a shallow series... The good guys don't always win, you have great flawed characters, both heroes and villains... Themes about good vs. evil, love and loss, law and lawlessness, morality and faith in a wild west world of "Godless" men... It's a great series from beginning to end.
I also love the music, and the opening title sequence! It really creates a mood. I can't get the title theme song out of my head!
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Star Trek in the age of "the Expanse" or "Battlestar Galactica"
I'm 4 episodes into Star Trek Discovery... Love the visuals, it's Star Trek, but with more of the look and feel of the new movies than the old TV series... More action, really beautiful visuals and cinematography, and a story arc that's a little darker, has a bit more edge and suspense... Even if it doesn't 100% jive with everything from the older shows - TNG, DS9, Voyager, etc., I think the show is what it needs to be... There's suspense where you need to see the next episode, where you really don't know what will happen next.
This is not TNG, I loved Star Trek TNG, its quirkiness and lovable characters... nothing takes away from that, but that's a show from a different era TBH... Discovery feels fresh and interesting, has enough edge and amazing art and visuals to keep it interesting in our current age of television, with all of the other amazing shows out there... I'm excited to see where this goes!
Dark Matter (2015)
The best show on Sy Fy... Keep it going for Season 4!
I just read that Sy Fy is cancelling Dark Matter! No way... Season 3 was amazing! This show has so much potential, I really hope Netflix or another studio picks this up for a 4th season... This show is currently the best sci fi show on TV!
It has great writing, interesting plot twists and such great characters!
Sense8 (2015)
The wachowskis offer a novel take on the superhero story
This is really an amazing show, one of the best shows on Netflix in my opinion.
Like the matrix, this show invites us to imagine a new concept of reality: whereas the former showed us what it might be like if we were living in a simulation, Sense8 shows us what it would be like if we were mentally connected to other people elsewhere in the world.
This is a great show! It's sort of a new idea about the superhero... Individually, the 8 protagonists are just talented humans, each with their own strengths and weaknesses that they have gained over the course of their life experiences all over the world... their each have their own exceptional "human" skills: a hacker, a detective, an actor, a martial artist, a DJ, a scientist, a thief, and a driver... On their own, they would be formidable each in their own way, but they would be only human... But their special power is that they all share a mental connection that allows them to not only communicate with one another but actually jump into each other's bodies, regardless of where they are in the world... This power essentially turns each of them into a James Bond like "all skilled" superhuman, a master of all of things...
This show exhibits amazing storytelling, it's really cool how each of the protagonists' life circumstances present different challenges and dangers, and somehow, by simply being connected to each other mentally, they are able to defeat all kinds of adversity, becoming almost like superheroes... This might sound like it's primarily an action show, and their is plenty of action, but actually the show is more of a mystery / drama.
Layer on top of that concept some very beautiful settings shot in 8 different cities all over the world (iceland, London, chicago, san francisco, Mexico, soeul, berlin, bombay, nairobi), and well formed interpersonal relationships that each character has with both their fellow sense8s and the people around them and you get a really rich and interesting world with so many stories to tell.
This show has amazing battle scenes, chase scenes, plot twists, moving dramatic performances, humor, mystery, beautiful cinematography, it tackles tough issues about prejudice, sexuality, social injustice, etc., 8 individual story arcs that could each be their own movie, combine with an interesting overarching story about the Sense8's discovery of their unique ability and the challenges of surviving in the world with homo sapiens. There are times that it kind of reminds me of X Men, at times it reminds me of the early seasons of Lost, where you have a main story arc, as well as individual story arcs that develop the characters...
Even though the show can be a bit dark at times, overall, it has an uplifting feel to it... Ultimately, we come to love and root for the characters, and it's about a community that is greater than the individual... Through each other, our heroes are able to find find their humanity, and overcome terrible challenges.
If you haven't watched this, I highly recommend binging both seasons. It starts out a little slow, but it gets better and better over the course of two seasons. It's one of my favorite shows on Netflix!
Betas (2013)
I like this better than Silicon Valley, hope they bring it back
I just binged the first season of this show and I am so disappointed that it got cancelled! This show is hilarious! If you like Silicon Valley, check this out, it was made shortly before Silicon Valley came out...
I watch silicon valley too and enjoy it as well, but somehow I felt more emotionally invested in the characters here. After watching the first season of this, I found myself rooting for this startup and wanting their app to succeed, they actually have an inspiring idea.
This show seems more thought out, and has better writing and acting to be honest. The characters seem more believable, the app they have seems more real, I feel like I know a number of real people from that show, and having seen some of the same situations working in tech startups in silicon valley, this feels more authentic. Somehow Silicon Valley feels more like a Hollywood version of a startup story, whereas Betas feels like it was written by somebody who has experienced it.
Amazon, please bring this show back for a second season! This is my favorite show on Amazon Prime Video...
Wonder Woman (2017)
My favorite DC movie so far, on par with one of the better Marvel movies
I watched Batman vs Superman, and in my opinion, the best thing that movie had going for it was the appearance of Wonder Woman in the final fight against Doomsday... Gal Gadot is perfect for the role, it was really refreshing that DC went with a little known new face rather than an established actress. She commands the screen, is likable, beautiful, heroic, human, and believably genuine in her performance.
I am a big fan of comicbook movies, my favorites include the original Guardians of the Galaxy, the first Iron Man, the Avengers, and Hellboy, and for an old classic, Superman II with Christopher Reeve. I think what makes for a successful comicbook movie is the ability to make the protagonists relatable to the audience despite their amazing powers, to have a touch of humor mixed in with the amazing spectacular cinematic action sequences where if you took a snapshot of it, it could easily be a frame from an artful comicbook page. Wonderwoman I think is one of the few DC movies that captures all of these qualities.
In most of the Batman movies, and in each of the newer Superman movies, I find that I really don't care about the protagonist. The heroes seem unrelatable, powerful but not very likable or heroic. In most of the DC films, it's really hard to understand what the hero is doing, what their motivations are, Batman and Superman seem like abstract caricatures rather than real people... Wonderwoman is the first DC movie that I think has heart and really feels "heroic" in the DC cinematic universe. I wish every DC movie was this good.
