Fellowship of the Dice (2005)
Very Funny
This is a very funny and insightful film that exposes the more humorous aspects of role playing games. When a woman on house arrest is drawn into a game hosted by a group of strangers, she quickly learns what a serious business gaming can be. Intercut with the narrative are interviews with actual gamers that are funny without knowing it. Like the characters in the film, they take role-playing games verrrrry seriously, which only adds to the laughs. The characters are quirky, the acting is honest and the the pace is rapid. "Fellowship of the Dice" is just the right length for a subject like this and should not be missed by anyone that has ever had an interest in elves, warlocks, mystical beings and dice.
Happily Even After (2004)
confusing, boring, badly acted, poorly directed, terribly written
This is a really bad film. I have no idea what it's even supposed to be about. None of the dialogue rings true, the acting is very uninspired, and the direction doesn't seem to have any heart. It appears the filmmakers had a lot in the way of resources, but no true artistic ability. Storytelling (especially with film) can be a particularly tricky thing. Each writer and director has to have an individual voice. For me, there was no voice to this film, because the script didn't seem to say anything. If it did say something, it was in a language that I couldn't understand. It seemed like it was directed the way the Three Stooges shorts were directed. They just set up the camera and did stuff in front of it. I don't mean to go hard on this film, but it really was a huge waste of a great chance by independent filmmakers to make something special.
R.O.T.O.R. (1987)
Oh...oh...no
This movie is the "Showgirls" of science fiction. It's so bad, it's like a universal constant. Like mathematics or physics or something. There's not even any nudity to balance things out. No good acting, no good story, no boobies.
Suffice it to say, the writer/director ripped off all the bad parts of both "The Terminator" and "Robocop". This thing makes those godawful films from India look like high art. At least Bollywood flicks have good dancing. If you MUST see this movie, see it with a bunch of your friends. You might want to consider voluminous amounts of alcohol or possibly a few bong hits to stay interested. There's no reason to torment yourself alone with this thing unless you're a complete masochist.
After you watch it, sit and think about the fact that someone actually put up MONEY to shoot, edit and release this thing. On top of that, some poor slob had to sit and watch all the footage and edit something interesting together. Imagine the crap that wound up on the cutting room floor. The mind boggles.
