Blade Runner: Black Lotus (2021)
When you render with Eevee instead of Cycles
That feeling when ur project is due in a few hours and u have no time to use Cycles. It really does look like a really bad cutscene. I could see an artistic direction, but its so bad no one can see it. If you want to use CG for an anime, at least do it right.
Ready Player One (2018)
Really goes to show how dumb the audience is.
Seriously, I don't hate the movie, but there's so many things that are wrong, overused, and just plainly stupid that I'd rather shoot myself in the foot than like this movie. It's a movie with a predictable plot, with dumbed down morals, but excellent visuals.
Oh no, the main girl has a mark on her face, but is otherwise an attractive person! What should we do? She's now so ugly!
Also how has no one tried to reverse in the first minigame in the first place? People on 4chan have been able to solve literal criminal cases, yet no one in the entire gaming world has thought of reversing?
The use of old-school references just feels too heavy in the plot, to the point where you can say it even lacks creativity. Take away all the references, and you practically end up with nothing.
The visual effects is where the movie only shines. It practically carried the movie. You know how a great movie doesn't need the world's best visuals? Well, it has great visuals but it's a crap movie.
Prometheus (2012)
Planetary Exploration But Everyone Sucks At Being Professional
Let's get one thing clear: Prometheus could've been a good movie, maybe even a great movie. But the lacklustre writing really brought this film down.
THE GOOD:
- The visual effects in this movie are amazing. They've really outdone themselves when it came to creating realistic and beautifully grotesque alien lifeforms.
- Some characters. Fifield, while appearing to be a tough and probably not very likeable character, at least he has the common sense to want to get out of there when there's a literal DEAD body on the ground.
David on this journey also acts like the HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey. A (mostly) emotionless, yet efficient, artificial lifeform that could quickly produce results.
THE BAD:
- Literally every other character in the movie.
Elizabeth Shaw seems to be a religious fanatic obsessed with finding out more about the Engineers, even though there's clear danger. Her addiction to finding answers would always result in disaster. And why would she just leave a hostile alien baby inside the medpod? She didn't even bother to mention to the crew "hey, there's a giant killer squid alien in the medpod, watch youself."
Holloway's idiotic decision to leave the ship when he is visibly ill nearly slam my head into the wall. If I woke up with bloody eyes and a moving, wriggling parasite in my eye, I would visit the medic.
Millburn's carefree and moronic decision to approach what clearly looked hostile ultimately killed him. The writers didn't even make him likeable enough for the audience to feel emotions when he was killed. What do you do when you see an alien organism? You stay away. It looked like a cobra, and it moved like a cobra. You don't see anyone else in literally any other space horror film where they go "goo goo gaa gaa" to an unknown alien animal.
- The crew just acted like idiots. A few examples:
~ They just casually bring a severed preserved alien head onboard. Like ??????? Isn't that some sort of biohazard? And why didn't they have any more protection, instead of just surgical masks and gloves? That doesn't seem safe. And people just watched without any protective gear?????
~ When they were running away from the rolling spaceship, why didn't they run out the sides? It was like a scene from a cartoon. It's like running straight on the traintracks when there's a train approaching.
~ Shaw claims not to need weapons on the initial expedition. Like sure that's safe. You have no idea what's inside, but absolutely don't bring anything that could keep you safe?
- Bad storytelling. There was just too many things going on. For some reason this movie loves to have two major events happening at once, such as:
~ Shaw having a hostile alien baby inside of her, a horribly gruesome scene, then Fifield shows up out of nowhere and starts killing the crew?
~Shaw is suffering severe pain from that improvised surgery. She is stumbling around the ship covered in mucus and blood and anaesthesia, but suddenly Weyland himself is there? And then she just forgets about her painful ordeal just moments ago?
- The story also moves too quickly. It's just one scene to another scene to another scene. Like such:
In the end, there's just way too many disappointments in the movie, so it's ultimately not that good.
Shin Evangelion Gekijôban (2021)
A Fantastic Closure To A Fantastic Series
The fourth and final movie to the Rebuild of Evangelion series is definitely the most unique and ambitious of all 4 movies. Even though there were confusing sections of the movie, it is expected from a plot that takes elements of religion.
This movie has finally made Mari relevant. In the previous films, Mari just felt like an addition by the studio to make her the best girl instead of someone else like Asuka or Rei, but her addition has finally been fully explained in this movie if you look closely. Both Rei and Asuka aren't compatible with Shinji; Rei resembled too closely of Shinji's mother, and also contains her DNA, so closing the film with them just feels inappropriate, and Asuka's rash and often selfish actions also contradicts with Shinji's school of thoughts.
While it is understandable that some will not enjoy the ending, the majority of audiences will definitely find closure in it, as it finishes on a happy note that departs from the general depressing vibe of previous Evangelion movies and shows.
Bai She: Yuan qi (2019)
The Good, The Bad, and The Unsophisticated
The Good:
A clear and direct modern adaptation of an ancient Chinese story. The character design is superb and on point, competing directly with both high-budget western titles. Beautiful animations (where it's not rushed).
The Bad:
Would cause confusion amongst both Western and Eastern audiences. The scene where Xuan and Blanca gets trapped inside the derelict "exorcism" chamber would not make any sense to both Western and Eastern audiences alike. The eight doors which Xuan deducts from are in reference to the Irregular Gates, which itself is associated with the Eight Gates, the Gate of Life, of Death, of Closing, of Brilliance, of Rest, of Fright, of Opening, and of Injury.
Character development-wise, we never fully understood the purpose of the grandmother. What was her relation with any of the villagers? Was she a relative of Xuan? Why didn't Xuan leave her at his place, because he's a doctor?
The Unsophisticated:
There are clear signs that the movie was rushed and was overbudget. In several scenes, character detail drops significantly and the animation goes from an A+ grade to a B-, looking rushed and unpolished. In some areas, liquid simulation also seemed off, making it more shiny and slimy than it actually is. Furthermore, in some parts of the movie, such as when Xuan get's turned into a demon, the movie suddenly changes in refresh rate, going down from 24p to something like 15p, adding onto the unpolished feeling of the movie. The movie also often cut to black to transition to different scenes, breaking the audience's attention, and bringing dissonance to the story telling. It's fine to show sudden scene changes where it applies, for example when Blanca get's knocked out, but suddenly fading to black and jumping to the river scene after the general's right-hand man's monologue? That just feels cheap and uncreative. For reference, it cuts to black six times. Another gripe is the scorching death scales. How the hell is the General even able to extract the scales when they're activating? Even the Master claimed that she was beyond her bounds should they activate, yet a mere mortal is able to. In the end, the scales don't even serve any real purpose. It doesn't do anything, and when it seems like its supposed to? The General just spits them out and they disappear for the rest of the movie.
Game Shakers (2015)
Cringy
My first impressions of this TV series is meh at best. The story line is just so illogical that its hard to even find it funny. Firstly, to make a game, it has to run on a game engine, such as DirectX, OpenGL, C++, Vulcan, Unity, Frostbite, or Gamebryo. Making a game just isn't as easy as the show might suggest. And there's the cost. Some kids just won't have the resources to buy a paid subscription of any game engine (with the exception of OpenGL, but its being around for over 2 decades) and there's just no way the game would and does look interesting enough to be a hit among the masses. Remember, the gaming community mainly consists of teenagers and above, and there is just no way that so many twelvies and under will buy the game. *cough cough* even the Minecraft community is only half under 13 years of age. And third, there's no way to make a rap song good without adding some sort of explicit content into it, so I have no idea why adding a rapper into the mix is a good idea.
It also has some clichéd stereotypical characters too. The smart one has glasses, the weird one is awkward, and the rapper is African American (please).
