Love Stories in Sunflower Valley (2021)
Surprisingly good
What a surprisingly good movie! Great actors, too. As always, Erin Cahill did well. The guy was actually pretty good in this, too. Plot was good, writing was better and the direction was just right for a tv movie romance. I do not expect too much for these types of movies so this one was a pleasant treat.
Love in Whitbrooke (2021)
What a sad waste
What a sad waste of good actors. My main complaint with this movie is the writing. There were a lot of scenes that did not move the story along and did not contribute to the overall plot. Like the girl visits for a week and now she has to help at the family's cafe and learn all the different coffee flavors and stuff. And you're like why?! She's just there for a freaking week! Just doesn't make sense at all.
Virgin River (2019)
Not like the book series
I have read the Virgin River book series and I can tell you that a lot of what you see on the netflix show do not accurately depict what's on the books. I know realistically you cannot put into the show 100% of what's in the books but a lot of what bothers me about the show is because of inaccuracies. For one, some characters have the same name but the actors are much younger in the show. Hope McCrea and Doc Mullins are old as dirt in the books but are very spry in the show. Also, they are very contrary and not married. This weird change is what is making me think about why Doc Mullins on the show would need the nurse Mel Sheridan. Another is Mel's character. Her motivation to go to Virgin River is not as heartbreakingly depicted as on the book. So then I question why she goes to VR in the first place. Also, the medical work she does on the show is kind of dodgy. If you read the books, you would also notice that some storylines that belong to other characters are given to Jack and Mel which makes it seem soap opera-ish. They're just packing on too much content on the J/M story. It's a lot. I agree with some of the reviewers that they gave this series the Hallmark treatment. It's all very glossy what's supposed to be rural America.
I've just started season 2 now. It's good if you just want to pass the time watching while on your phone but if you want great, read the books. They're awesome.
Check Inn to Christmas (2019)
Overdecorated mess!
If you read the plot, it doesn't sound so bad. But then you watch it and it's awful. The town Christmas activities are juvenile, the set is overdecorated ( an inn with 4 large trees in a small reception area) and a script that is uninspired. I liked the leads in other movies but this project needs a lot more than good actors to be pass muster.
Jingle Bell Bride (2020)
4.5 Stars, No chemistry
I know we watch Hallmark movies with unbelievable plots but oftentimes, the good script and execution makes up for it. Unfortunately, this one missed that mark. There were no big enough hurdles to make the H/h closer in a short span of time. There was no chemistry between the actors. Their interaction in the movie was a few times cringe-y. I was left thinking the two characters would never get together because there was no spark whatsoever. I was looking forward to this because of the diverse cast but was disappointed. Last thing, I would have preferred the grandma to be the mayor. The one they cast just didn't act or look like a leader type.
Elevator Girl (2010)
An old Hallmark movie with a different formula
I've been bummed watching the newer Hallmark movies (festival galore, cooking competition) so went looking for older stuff. This one is better than the new movies. The storyline is a little more plausible - they meet, they date a while, they break up and then get back together in the end. Unlike in the new movies, the couple kiss a few times before the ending. Shocker! The lead actors were also good in this movie, not too cheesy. The only part that I did not like was the music. It sounded low-budget, kind of lounge singer vibes. My sister and I could not stop laughing listening to the songs, it was truly awful.
Enola Holmes (2020)
A long movie with a short plot
I wanted to like this movie, honest. But just looking at the running time, I thought the story would have a plot so tangled it needed the 2 hours plus to unravel the mystery. Spoiler alert - I was wrong. The plot is simple and the mystery is not so mysterious. The movie would have benefitted from editing. The story jumps from one place to another and some scenes just do not add anything to the story. The movie ended with me still waiting for that climactic scene.
Love in the Forecast (2020)
Ridiculous movie
In the first 15 minutes, I stopped paying close attention to the movie because of the ridiculous assertions regarding meteorology. Whoever wrote this screenplay really needs to research weather forecasting. The plot is basically the guy telling the girl she should stop paying attention to the science and her tools and more on nature patterns like birds flying low, ants building taller anthills and such so she can predict the weather. I'm like, 'what the hell?!' I'm sure animal behavior is a clue and there's science behind it but to say stop reading the barometer bec it is not accurate is stupid. I like the actors individually but not together in this movie. Cute dog and cute outfits on the heroine, though. And it's true what they say of the mom, she's too young to be the mom. Her hair is obviously a wig. If they wanted her more believable, they should have added wrinkles and such. Or casted an older actress.
Son of God (2014)
Does not live up to the hype
I watched this movie in the cinema without having seen the series The Bible first. If I had, I would have saved myself the trouble of watching it in the big screen.
Though I'm not a biblical scholar and have not mastered the books on Jesus' life, what I do know I can safely say are not consistent with what I saw in this movie. The script is poorly written, the depiction of the biblical characters are shallow and the acting is not very good. Also, one of the main problems I have of this movie is that Diogo Morgado is not how Jesus is supposed to look like. His features are not Jewish-like. The whole time I was watching, I was thinking he was a beautiful model doing a photoshoot set in historical times. Also, his weight and musculature during the crucifixion scene was laughable. I wouldn't believe that a person who was frequently fasting, carried a cross and suffered torture looked like he was in the pink of health.
In short, not something I would recommend.
