Sinister (2012)
Fun but not much to it
Sinister thrives on mystery and the acting of its lead Ethan Hawke. However, the horror aspects are not as captivating due to the lack of motive from the antagonist. The ending of the film is probably the best part, because while tragic it is unexpected.
The Expanse (2015)
Space Relations
The Expanse is packed with everything one would expect out of space. There's war, interplanetary relations as well as sci-fi.
The show shines the best through its multilayering of characters which creates a captivating story.
If you want action, politics and sci-fi: The Expanse has it.
Como Era Gostoso o Meu Francês (1971)
Wonderfully Tasty
How Tasty was my Little Frenchman is a film that takes no stance on the history of Brazil. This piece of third cinema symbolizes the epitomy of Tropicalism which is when third cinema started utilizing Hollywood techniques to reach a wider audience apart from its already national following. This film is part of revolutionary cinema (aka third cinema) which seeks to involve the viewer in the political environment behind the film. During the 1060s and 1970s Brazil was experiencing mass political persecution of people from the right and left, this can be seen in the beginning with the "trial" of the Frenchman.
As for the film, it has a captivating story that isn't driven by the usual heroic perspectives of main characters. Despite some highly questionable stereotypes , It simply tells an interesting story that is also deeply rooted in the history of Brazil.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Just pure fun
The more I think about it the more I end up liking it. The rating is too high but frankly, it was a fun movie. It had its jump scares and some very good moments that make it redeemable.
For a Marvel fan, this film is full of amazing moments which will definitely make people smile. Unfortunately, this film is held up by WandaVision as it is undeniably a sequel to the show. So for people who haven't watched that it'll be a confusing trip.
The character of America Chavez is pushed into the script which makes for a really annoying plus. However, the actress is a phenomenal, and despite her ridiculous comic accuracy for a Marvel Film, she certainly has potential which she fulfills from time to time.
As for the Sam Rami of it all-it is what makes it so fun. His style of directing creates some captivating moments that are akin to his other films (mainly The Evil Dead franchise). It's not a film to be taken too seriously regardless of it's efforts to do so. After WandaVision this film is too silly to match the heavy impression of loss in Wanda's heart.
Overall, my advice is to go in thinking you'll get Marvel surprises. Expect an over convoluted spectacle with breath taking visuals. This film did not make me cry, it was just pure ridiculous fun.
