Prey (2022)
I pray to god your review is a joke!
Oh boy,
As a parent, I would have thought letting your "babies" watch an R rated movie would be a little irresponsible.
Next time read the parental advice section.
I'm also, a little concerned about your children's education, or lack there of. The title of the movie is clearly spelt "Prey" which, if you look it up in a dictionary, has a completely different meaning to the word Pray.
Most unforgivable though, is that you have given away the ending of the movie, without ticking the spoiler box, thus recking it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
If your children are still crying it's probably out of pity for you.
Nice one zymbtf.
Better Call Saul: Nippy (2022)
Confused by the Confusion!
I really don't understand all the negative reviews for this episode?
I think some people may have got caught up in the excitement of the recent story arc and forgotten about previous plot lines.
Now the prequel is catching up with the events of Breaking Bad, it's flicking forward to Post-Saul (Gene), shot in Black and White to signify the different timeline.
Yes, they changed the actor that plays Jeff and maybe this has added to the confusion. But, if you (re)watch the first 10 mins of season 4 episode 1 and season 5 episode 1 before this episode the wider story makes perfect sense.
It's also quite apparent that this isn't a stand alone episode like "Fly" from Breaking Bad, which some fans have likened it to. Instead it sets the scene for what will likely come next.
I would expect there to be more Gene sequences as the season continues and I for one welcome them.
In the same way Jimmy became Saul, Saul becomes Gene for the next chapter of this great show.
For All Mankind: The Grey (2021)
Mind Blowing!
Simply outstanding season finale.
Uplifting, soul searching, moving, emotional. Just perfect, a masterclass in every aspect.
Can't wait for Mars 1995.
Manifest (2018)
Science Fiction or Religion?
So, I've been watching this show on/off now for a few months and I honestly still can't decide whether its any good???
The over-acting, is pretty bad and the story is hit and miss to say the least but there is something here that keeps me coming back for more.
What's really bugging me though is...
At first I thought this was a Sci-Fi show but with the constant, nauseating do-goodery and mention of faith, miracles and OMG "Callings" I'm convinced this is really some kind of Christian propaganda.
I think this needs to end now and put me out of my misery but I notice there's a 4th season on the horizon!!!
I really feel I've invested too much time in this show now and I'm still none the wiser to what's actually going down.
Amen Manifest.
The Silence (2019)
Terrible
Expected better from a decent cast.
Nice idea, poorly executed.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
46 Billion Squid
With a premise similar to the likes of Cube and Circle, the odd titled Squid Game helps us question humanity all over again as well as the importance society places on money.
As dark and violent as Battle Royal and intriguing as 3% it grabs your attention early on and keeps you guessing to the end.
Great binge worthy series with a likeable cast and main protagonist.
Knocked off one point as I didn't love the ending but otherwise a really great TV series with some great ideas and worthy of top marks.
Season 2? Personally I think it works better as a one off but then again...
Wrong Turn (2021)
Different Turn
Quite a different ride compared to the original 2003 movie but OK.
Unlike the protagonists from the original, this group of woke emo dweebs are annoying to the point that you find yourself initially routing for the bad guys.
But, as the herd thins a bit and the plot takes shape there's a decent story here with a strong lead part. The story twists a little to the verge of becoming interesting and there is a satisfying ending if you pay attention during the credits.
Sure, it's not going to reinvent the horror genre or set the film industry alight but it's a pretty enjoyable movie worthy of a watch.
Awake (2021)
Insomniaction
Interesting plot and a pretty decent movie.
The "unexplained global event" genre seems to be a thing now with writers and directors clambering to come up with a slightly different twist on the plot.
As they go, this is a pretty good one.
The movie does seem to accelerate too quickly at the beginning with little explanation. However, once the underlying threat, in this case, sleep deprivation, is revealed, the movie settles down to a steady pace changing to frantic towards the end when all seems lost.
The solution is a little too obvious and mostly you are just waiting for it to play out but, the journey is entertaining enough for it not to detract too much from your enjoyment.
Plus, the acting here is decent and you do find yourself caring about the plight of the main characters and wiling them to pull through.
Overall a solid movie with some great ideas and worthy of a C+ for effort.
3% (2016)
100%
Dystopia vs Utopia always make for a good story and 3% does this is an intelligent and stylish fashion.
As with programs of a similar genre the characters and back stories make the show stand out. The futuristic set of the Process provides the sci-fi feel, the white corridors contrasting with the colourful but impoverished Inland favela.
The interesting, sometimes violent, social experimentation of the Process is lead by man broken by grief and questioning the authority and legitimacy of the mysterious Offshore. Then there is the infiltration of the Cause and their yet revealed intentions providing some intrigue.
The voice acting/dubbing doesn't detract too much from the experience and becomes less of a factor as you settle in to it. Some of the impromptu jaunty music is quite funny though.
I should mention I'm only about half way though the first season so I can't comment on it's longevity but so far It's intriguing enough to keep me coming back for more.
A solid 100% for the 3% :-)
Stowaway (2021)
Real Gravity
Anna Kendrick is brilliant in this gripping, moving space odyssey.
The cinematography is sublime, the score inspiring and the acting brilliant.
Science-Fact at it's best. Just excellent.
Sea Fever (2019)
Definitely worth a watch
Really great little movie. Wish there were more like this.
Refreshing story and well acted.
Fear the Walking Dead: The Door (2021)
Nooooo, why?
Melancholy, emotional, expertly done.
Really sad to see one of my favourite characters killed off so suddenly and unexpectedly but what a great story and what great acting.
Rare to see a "spin off show" continually overshadow the original. A true gem.
Keep up the good work.
The Walking Dead: Here's Negan (2021)
You are so beautiful...
Ok, confession time, I reviewed the last episode gave it 2 stars and was less than complimentary about the writers responsible.
I stick by my decision but credit where credit's due TWD writers pulled it out of the bag with this episode.
The Negan backstory! Way overdue and oh man it did not disappoint.
TWD back to it's best. Just Excellent!
The Walking Dead: Diverged (2021)
Apocalypse Soup?
Not sure the WD writers are aware of YouTube?
But, if I really wanted to learn how to fix the fuel line on my motorbike or hook up a battery to some solar panels I know where to head.
This episode only emphasises what I've suspected for a while now. TWD writers have clearly run out of ideas.
Aside from watching an old woman's apparent Mental illness there's nothing here.
FTWD still knows how to tell a story what's your excuse?
Beyond Skyline (2017)
Stupid, Awesome, Brilliant!
I was surprised as hell to learn there was a sequel as I remember Skyline being pretty average TBH.
But, inspired, I decided to watch the 1st one again. I was pleasantly surprised "It was actually pretty good" I thought...on with Beyond Skyline then.
Got to confess, loved it.
Not sure whether the general quality of Sci-fi has been diluted over the years to point where the average stuff seems better or whether I missed the point initially and it just needed a refreshed set of eyes?
Maybe the glory days of T2 and The Matrix are gone but there's still some cracking movies out there if you see past the love/hate 5 star reviews.
It's a solid 8 for me. Trust.
So on with Skylines then.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
This is going to be so cool...
1: Aw, nice robots 2: Oh right ok 3: what? 4: hmm 5: is this good? 6: my head hurts 7: nah, this is bonkers 8: oh ok, I think I get it now 9: WTF 10: WTAF
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Masterclass
Excellent acting performances from Anya Taylor-Joy and Isla Johnston.
A dark but heartwarming tale of a young woman's triumph in a very male dominated 1950/60's America.
Any prior chess knowledge is inessential to your enjoyment.
This brilliant story is compelling to the last move.
9/10
The Babadook (2014)
Low budget, ok horror.
Slow to get started but,
when it does, there's some good scares and a glimpse of a better movie trying to escape.
Overall average. Not sure why this is rated quite as high as it is in the modern horror movie suggestions.
Plus, really can't forgive that WTF ending.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Ok.
This movie seems to feature highly in the modern horror movie recommendations online.
Don't know what all the fuss is about and I'm not quite sure what to make of it.
I'm not sure this is what I would call horror or particularly good for that matter.
Just ok really.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Perfectly Splendid
Let's be clear, this ISN'T Haunting of Hill House 2.
This is a new story by the HOHH creators, featuring some of the same actors, albeit, playing very different parts. Oh, and it's set in England.
If any of that bothers you then don't let it.
This IS a fresh new ghost story with brilliant acting, character building and story telling. The cinematography and score are fantastic as is the tension and suspense it creates. Both compelling and addictive, that internal debate on whether to watch one more episode won't go on for too long.
Looking for something less cliche and more cerebral this Halloween? Then look no further...
Sense8 (2015)
Brilliant!
I was Definitely late to the party with this TV series. But after watching the Matrix trilogy again and on a nostalgia high I thought I'd check in on the Wachowski's.
So glad I stumbled upon Sense8.
Slick, sexy, emotional and thought provoking, what a ride. 8 eps in and I'm hooked.
Brilliant characters, great story, seriously can't recommend enough.
PS. 4 Non-Blonds Montage wrecked me.
Dark (2017)
Absolute Masterclass
The best SciFi series of the decade period.
As soon as I have recovered both mentally and emotionally I will watch this series again from start to finish.
Don't even hesitate, watch this now and prepare to have your mind blown.
Just Brilliant.
The American (2010)
Ultimately Underwhelming
Slow and awkward plot which promises more than it actually delivers.
There are far better movies of this genre more deserving of an hour and 45 minutes of your time.
Strike Back: Vendetta: Part 6 (2020)
Amazing
Brilliant Acting and Direction. This was a truly a moving episode, totally unexpected and expertly done. Just Brilliant.
Inside Man: Most Wanted (2019)
Horrible
Tramples over the grave of the original movie then violates it's corpse.
RIP Inside Man.
