Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020)
Inspirational, fresh story
I was genuinely surprised by how much I liked this movie. It's a story of a girl with big dreams, and how her dad pushes her to reach for the stars. A girl carving a place for herself in a man's world. Janhvi Kapoor was refreshing, subtle, and effective in her role. Pankaj Tripathi was brilliant as her dad. Great effort by all supporting cast including Angad Bedi, the Air Force officers etc.
Highly recommend, would watch this movie a second and a third time!
Machine (2017)
cringe worthy..
It was downright painful to sit through this disaster!
No story, no performances, no relation to reality, and absolutely no emotion.
You watch some scenes, and wonder, whats the point? Especially when the background story is revealed, nothing makes sense in terms of eliminating certain characters.
The dialogues are so corny (half are Instagram memes come to life) that you applaud the actors for keeping a straight face through them. lol
I felt for the girl for a bit, but she is so disappointing in the ending that you're just done with all, and if they all blew up in the end, you wouldn't even bat an eye.
Don't watch it.
Dear Zindagi (2016)
I caught myself rolling my eyes a lot.
I saw so many good reviews about this movie, and finally made plans to see it for a couple of reasons. 1. It wasn't just another Bollywood love story. 2. SRK looks very age appropriate, and no signs of overacting in the promos. 3. Love the title song.
Sadly, after watching the movie, I walked out liking only those 3 things.
One of the main problems I found with this movie was that I couldn't relate nor sympathize with the main character, Kaira. She comes off so mean spirited, spoiled, entitled, and self absorbed that its hard to see her beyond that. She is genuinely mean towards her friends, as well as both of the boys she is involved with in the beginning.
Secondly, all that buildup and the depth of her actions, you wonder what big tragedy occurred in her life that led her to become this person? and imagine my face when you realize this is all because mom and dad were trying to deal with an unexpected financial crisis when she was young, so they left her with the grandparents, so she was mad, but then they came back and by then she wanted to live with her grandparents...What? THAT lead to all these issues. THATS IT?
Also, the lashing out at her parents, the inability to have an adult conversation, to inability to think that people may have a mind of their own and have a life beyond her makes this more of coming of age, teenage drama, not a story of a grown professional young adult who has made it this far with absolutely no maturity. Even the lessons SRK teaches her, makes you think, how did this girl make it past 6th grade without knowing the basics of life?
I felt myself feeling more for the people who came in contact with her than the character herself. The poor heartbroken bf at the beginning, the couple who apologize for bumping into her and are almost thrown a rock at, her parents, her friends, and Raghuvendra, who was respectful and was disrespected publicly many a times, and the shop keeper who had to clean the floor after she starts breaking jars.
Anyways, overlooking Kaira, the movie is boring as heck. The last hour I was just waiting for the end, and it kept dragging, with the same conversations, and the same room.
Trust me, give it a miss. You'll walk out shaking your head.
Bajirao Mastani (2015)
Much ado about nothing.
Lets start with the pros: -Excellent performances by Priyanka, Ranbir for most parts, and actress playing Bajirao's mother.
- Grand locales, sets, and costumes. Amazing cinematography through and through.
-Couple of good songs (mastani ho gayi, Pinga) now, on to the cons: -I read the disclaimer that the facts have been changed for the sake of movie-making, but i don't understand why it is even based on Bajirao? It takes nothing of what makes him a historic figure and his legacy, but more of a love-lust story of him and his mistress.
-Deepika. Shes beautiful and a good actress in many roles, but she does not look, nor play this role. You see Deepika in every scene, not Mastani; not a woman of the 1700s with her posture, poor accent, glassy eyes, and dialogue delivery.
-With the exception of Kashi Bai. there is no character development. Ranbir is introduced as cocky, and until the end, he stays cocky. There is no growth or lessons. Mastani stays Bajirao obsessed, playing victim through the movie with the attacks, there is no remorse at her end for breaking up a marriage, or hurting Kashibai.
-Lastly, this movie needed to be trimmed by at least 30-45 minutes. The death scene is so prolonged that you're begging to see the ending credits.
In conclusion, I don't see the big deal with this movie. Certainly no masterpiece. Its the story of a confused ruler throwing fits over people being disappointed over his second wife and blaming religion, whereas, people just hate her because shes a home-wrecker. lol Give it a skip and watch Jodha Akbar instead.
