Sobibor (2018)
Tone deaf mess
I'm not going to mince too many words on this one. the film felt like such an extreme mess, i had a really hard time taking anything serious, everything felt very "floaty" and inconsequential, character development felt all over the place, oh and the dubbing was on another level, wow.
Don't expect anything but disappointment from this movie, i had a few chuckles at how bad it was, and it's a pretty damn shame if you end up chuckling and even laughing at a holocaust film.
Shot Caller (2017)
Nothing bad, but sadly also not a lot of good either.
I saw this film 6/21/2017 at a preview screening.
It was a movie that started interesting, but the more it went on, the more i started to wonder "what's the point?" until it ended leaving me feeling very lukewarm.
The film follows a non linear progression, it paints a dramatic picture about family, the prison system and how it changes people. Coaster-Waldau plays the protagonist "Money" and we follow his journey through the prison system interwoven into a plot about an impending deal between two criminal gangs.
The acting is quite good, camera is decent, score was a little on the dramatic side for a movie like this. for me it all comes down to the poor story. To me it felt like an Antoine Fuqua kind of movie, but without a good story. Some plot points feel unresolved and parts feel like they could use some more attention.
Some might like it, some might not, personally i have a hard time recommending it though due to its length and lack of any real plot. i think i get what Waugh was trying to say but sadly it falls flat.
Mechanic: Resurrection (2016)
Bad Movie - Good Laugh
So, going into this movie, i was expecting a dumb action movie, but in hindsight, i was expecting "someone who has trouble reading" dumb, not "someone who is utterly lost without supervision" dumb.
To be clear, this movie is so cookie cutter bad that viewing it seriously will just make you sad. but the movie is great to watch with a few friends and riff on.
The whole plot is just so bland and far fetched, actions are sometimes so illogical and the movie doesn't even follow it's own rules (for instance, from the trailer we learn he has to assassinate a few people and make it look like an accident. yet one kill is very very clearly not an accident)
The CGI is so bad, i'm not sure if Worldwide FX is that bad of a studio or if they had to work with a very very limited budget, maybe both.
On a special note, The romance scene between JS&JA is really vulgar, as in, you feel uncomfortable watching and feel almost guilty.
The Sea of Trees (2015)
Entertaining Eyecandy
Saw it in a sneak preview screening.
After seeing the horrible "The Forest" i was a bit reluctant to see another movie about the suicide forest, but was surprised that this movie deals with different themes.
I watched the movie because i wanted to watch a movie, and in that i found a lot of enjoyment. The movie had some good pacing and it deals with basically a present and past storyline entwined and both are interesting enough to have you go "no wait, i want to know how it continues" with every switch.
The acting was good, the story was perhaps a bit on the "cliché" side near the end, but in all satisfying. I have to mention the cinematography, because there are some beautiful shots in there, sometimes it felt so strange when shots where done without a steady cam but in ends up feeling more "organic" in the end.
So if you want to watch a nice story driven film, give it a shot.
