Dumbo (2019)
Boring, Disney stop making these movies please!
After all the boring live action Disney cashcows, this is another low. Dumbo is as boring as possible... They tricked me again, I thought "let's try again", but my conclusion is that almost all these Disney real life remakes are so boring, uninspiring and totally not magical...
I almost fell asleep! Better watch the animated classic, that Dumbo is 100 times better!!!
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Made with lots of love, a worthy sequel to the original movie!
When I read about this sequel, 2 years ago, I thought "oh no, not another one of those uninspired remakes...". But I was wrong: Mary Poppins Returns has been made with so much love for the original movie, it's incredible! I had tears in my eyes watching it, the people who made this movie know how to make a worthy sequel. With little references to the original, but never wanting to repeat or replace the old movie. And it's more than that: it's just an amazing movie on it's own.
If you know all 8 original Mary Poppins books, the movie is even more magical, as there are lots and lots of references to the chapters in the original books! The adventure are all made out of chapters from the books P.L. Travers wrote.
The music is amazing (the style is modern, yet classic Disney movie music and songs), there is hand-drawn animation (hurray!) and the actors are all very good in their roles. Emily Blunt does not seem to act, she simply is Mary Poppins: probably the best Mary Poppins i've ever seen (I have seen the stage musical many times).
Mary Poppins Returns is the movie all Mary Poppins fans out there must love. As Mary Poppins would say: A cover is not the book, so open it up and take a look :)
Freaky Friday (2018)
The music is awesome, too bad they cut songs.
I never saw the musical in the theatre (I live in Europe), but I listened to the theatre-cd so many times. This movie is really very, very nice and I'm happy that Disney made this, so I have been able to see what the songs are about. The songs are the best, written by the team who made the musical "Next to Normal", Freaky Friday is another piece of art.
Too bad Disney cut songs from the musical version for this movie, they even cut 2 songs from the movie soundtrack in the actual movie.
But still: it's really worth seeing this movie, as is is well made and again: I love the songs! Go see it for yourself :)
Olaf's Frozen Adventure (2017)
Not bad at all!
This 21 minute "short" went by very quickly and it was actually not bad at all!
Olaf is not my favorite character (he is rather annoying), but I still think the Frozen franchise is very nice.
This "short" has been made with love and the more Frozen songs, the better I think.
OK, the story is not earthmoving, but it's just a fun little movie.
Don't be mislead by the low IMDA rating and decide for yourself, you might actually enjoy this.
Coco (2017)
Pixar still has it!
I was afraid that Pixar lost it! With all the sequels past and the sequels in the making, I thought they were out of ideas. But thank heaven, Pixar still has it!
These original movies is what we love Pixar for. No 'Cars 27', 'Finding Whoever' or 'Monsters in Some Random Place' (just to make money), but 'Ratatouille', 'Inside Out' and YES: 'Coco'!!!
Coco is another very original movie, with great theme and atmosphere. And it has a big heart!
I loved the story, how the movie looks and the music.
And I love the fact that these Disney/ Pixar movies do not thrive on short-term laughs and cheap jokes, but they tell a great story, that is still relevant in 50 years. This distinguishes Disney/ Pixar from Dreamworks/BlueSky/ etc.
It must be a great movie for kids, but I think Coco is just as nice for adults to watch.
If you like Pixar, you will love Coco!!! :)
