Poor Things (2023)

Very close to a remarkable movie

I will not list all the qualities of this movie, they can be found in the reviews either on this site or in the press. I would like to say what determined my stars score. I found the movie somehow trailing ( looking at my watch after an hour says it all) maybe because the numerous explicit sexual scenes which did not really add too much to the plot. I think that too much explicit sex may increase the audience without adding anything to the story. However, it looks that I cannot submit this review if I do not add more text therefore I would like to say that my favourite scene is the dans in the Portughese restaurant.

An unexpected love story in a horror series

This love story is unexpected in a series about epidemics/zombies/disasters/violence/death. I suppose this is why some viewers did not like it, and not because of homophobic reasons, taking also into account that the characters were gay in the game as well. The episode, probably unique amongst these kind of movies, was beautifully crafted and played. I am happy and probably lucky as well, because I have never played the game, therefore all is new for me. I wish so much that we will see a round story with an end and not series after series with a story getting more and more diluted and noninteresting. However, this is what happens with all successful series.

Changes

I may be wrong but changing the director may not have been the best option. I still enjoy the series ( I have already seen 4 episodes) but something was changed and not in good, I cannot pinpoint exactly what , but I will try. The colour is changed, the location and the interiors of the flats in the area in which the girls were born look different, the complex personalities and behaviour of Lila and Lenu are less nuanced. The revelation for me is the actress who plays Lenu's mother, Immacolata Greco, in all series, but especially in this one. It is fascinating to see the complexity of feelings and emotions on her face. In spite o these changes I do enjoy this series as much as I enjoyed reading the book, and I recommend it.

The Lost Daughter (2021)

3 stars for acting

The actors did their best but they could not save this dull story. I can only think that the author of the script did not understand or was not able to translate for the movie the spirit of Elena Ferrante's book.

Moving towards ridiculous and unbelievable

So many weak, cheap and incredible facts: moving over the border between Gilead and Canada is not a problem anymore, everybody follows June's plans, she is very little interested in Nicole, leaving her in foster care, but thinking all the time to the daughter left in Gilead, and miraculously and very quickly, in a matter of minutes, she convinces 22 just released maids to linch a Commander they have probably never met or known before. Although I understand what the idea is: all the pain and hate June had accumulated in her life in Gilead which she kept suppressed in order to survive, overwhelmed her in the new social environment and changed her dramatically. But this change and its consequences are not very credible presented. And lots of time spent on different characters' face close ups, to fill in the time I suppose. I think that 1 star would have been more than enough for this disappointing end of the series but, on the other hand, were Aunt Lidia, Janine and Esther whose story was , in my opinion, much better done and acted.

Nomadland (2020)

Sometimes boring and lacking depth but nevertheless it worth seeing

I was looking for this movie. I admire and follow Frances McDormand since I saw Fargo. She loves playing complex, unhappy characters, but this one was too linear. Also there is no plot and everybody seems to get on well with everybody, which I am sure it is not the case in nomad world. Maybe all it is too subtle for me and the movie does not resonate with pragmatic, down-to earth people. Therefore this movie can make one think and understand oneself better. Last but not least, I loved the sceneries. Therefore, even If I consider it overrated, I would say that it worth seeing it.

Moving stories but some details are missing

I found the way the four stories are evolving in parallel, the permanent sliding between interviews, real images and acting , very skilfully done and captivating, although sometimes difficult to follow. I admired the strength and the intelligence of the four survivors, and I was moved by the help they got . I found the acting very good and convincing. I was completely drawn into the movie, which stayed in my mind for a while, long enough to start wondering about some events which were difficult to explain, because a series of details were missing. Those times were very hard, maybe there were facts the survivors could not or did not want to remember. Definitely I will watch this movie again soon.

Moving, beautiful movie

Beautiful done and acted. It was a great pleasure to see again the great actress who is Sofia Loren. In addition, in my opinion, the rest of the cast and crew were as outstanding, all contributing to bring to live a more complex story than it seems at first look. I read a criticism that this movie is a remake. So what? There are lots of remakes our days, it just helps us not to forget beautiful stories and also to facilitate sharing them with the new generations. Well done Netflix.

Snatched (2017)

Very entertaining

I have never written reviews before but I decided to do it now because I am surprised by the low score this film gets. I think it delivers exactly what one expects: 90 min of fun. All the cast seems to enjoy the roles and it was a great bonus to see Goldie Hawn again.

Hyde Park on Hudson (2012)

Great acting let down by the script

In spite of a plethora of great actors and brilliant acting the movie fails to help me understand what was the attraction exerted by the President on his lovers. I suppose it could be attraction to power, social position , duty , weak personallity, but it does not seem to be love and admiration. Bill Murray's character is unatractive and unpleasant. The best part for me was the portrait of the British monarchs, in relation with each other and with the New World. What a pity , this movie was close of being a great one.

Made in a hurry

I feel that the last 2 episodes, especially the last one , lost the magic of the previous ones. It lacks physiological depth in understanding and motivating the characters' decissions. Without the splendid acting of Julia Aug and "Peter III" I feel that the beauty of Ekaterina is not enough to convince me to watch further.
