1922 (2017)
Atmospheric but slow
The movie is beautifully shot and very evocative of the period and location.
The plot summary tells you up front what happens -- a man kills his wife after coercing his son into helping. Who knows why he couldn't have just done it himself. As expected with a Stephen King story, things go downhill afterwards.
My primary objection is the accent used by Thomas Jane in the lead role. Was it supposed to be ... some kind of Midwest Okie? Others have praised his acting so mine is a minority opinion, but I could never get past it.
The story is narrated by the father, which isn't a device I particularly enjoy in general, plus it makes his weird accent and slowly deliberate way of speaking even more prominent.
Somewhere Between (2017)
Somewhere Between Bad and Boring
I watched the first episode and part of the second.
The plot of the show seemed intriguing and I was looking forward to it. (Although not making any episodes available to critics beforehand is never a good sign and I should have paid more attention.) As others have mentioned, the daughter is kind of unlikable. Maybe it shouldn't matter since she's primarily a plot device and her mother would of course love her and be frantic regardless, but it seems like an odd choice for her to be an obnoxious little snot.
Patton's acting choices put me off because her emotions are turned all the way up all the time. As a viewer, I'm relying on her to solve this and save her child, but her behavior is erratic, unstable, and illogical. It's possible she gets it together as the show goes on, but I'm not going to stick around on hope.
There are also a couple of confusing, interwoven story lines that I didn't care enough to try to figure out.
