Shaft (1971)
A true hidden gem that's still relevant today
"Shaft" isn't the first film to come to mind when you think of great 70's flicks, but anyone who watches this one can't help but love it. It's timeless, relevant, and flat out awesome.
You can see how Gordon Parks influenced modern filmmakers like Spike Lee and F. Gary Gray with "Shaft." Up until 1971, there weren't many films by black filmmakers with a primarily black cast, as the effects of the Civil Rights movement were still being felt. Martin Luther King died in 1968, but he lived on in his efforts for social justice and equality. That war is still being fought today. "Shaft" was really important in that sense, as there wasn't really a black presence in Hollywood. It's not a perfect film, but you can't understate the social importance of it.
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
I thought it was great
Reading other user reviews here on IMDb, it's obvious this is a pretty divisive film. People are like you "either love or hate this movie." The truth is, some may love it, others may hate it. But there will still be those in between. For me, I thought it was great and one of Spike Lee's best yet.
The story may seem predictable and not entirely original, but the actors bring the script to life in such a lively and energetic way that you kind of don't notice the cliche plot points. There are intense scenes throughout, especially one extremely tense scene that I won't spoil, but if you've seen it, you know exactly what scene I'm referring to.
Overall, "Da 5 Bloods" is worth watching if you're a big movie person, or if you're just a casual Netflix subscriber looking for something new to watch. It's the cast and Spike Lee's directing that bring this film to life, and I was left satisfied by the end. If you don't like it, that's okay. Film is art, and art is subjective.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Don't let the critics fool you!
First off, let me start with the casting and performances. I can completely see why Ben Affleck was chosen to play Batman. He was perfect for the role in this movie. Henry Cavill gives about the same kind of performance he gave in Man of Steel (2013). Jeremy Irons is one of the best live action carnations of Alfred ever. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman was the biggest surprise of the movie, and it was a good surprise. Jesse Eisenberg was not the best choice for Lex Luthor, but he did give us a different take on the character, which I have to admit I liked.
Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL created an epic score for the movie that is definitely some of the best work Junkie XL has done so far in his career. The Wonder Woman theme fit perfectly with the movie and the character.
The Batman scenes were some of the best in the movie. Without spoiling anything, the fight between Batman and Superman was awesome, but it could've been a bit longer. The fight had a nice set up leading up to it, but it did take a little too long to get to. After the fight between the two heroes, the movie started to lose my interest, but regained it back towards the climax of the movie.
One thing to note: In the comics, the Batman v Superman storyline takes place after the Justice League storyline. In this film series, Batman v Superman takes place before the Justice League. It would've been better for fans and critics if this movie took place after Justice League.
In the end, Zack Snyder made a really good movie and is just as good as (if not better than) Man of Steel.
