Searching (2018)
A Missed Opportunity to be a Great Film.
I have to say that the movie is not bad. In fact, compared to the other movies which use internet as a character, the movie is well done, believable and logical. The internet becomes a character, but it is real. No fake creepy websites or deep internet bull. Speaking of realism, Cho's performance was very good and emotional as a dad suffering a great trauma. Messing was also good, there are moments when you feel the connection to Cho's character and how they navigate this trauma together.
When the final revelation surfaces, I really felt terrified because I thought the father has stumbled upon a dark and dangerous international network of child trafficking. That hit hard, and I started to believe I was really witnessing a horror movie with a very very dark undetone. (and a current one indeed). But what really transpired in the movie didn't work for me. I found it far-fetched and too fantastic to be believable.
It is a shame. The movie could have gone into a dark, creepy and ominous direction (which to be honest would be too much for a movie like this) and be remembered as a superb movie with a Seven-like original twist far beyond anyone's expectations. But it fell short. And this fantastic revelation hurt the movie in my opinion. Still, it is a good movie which due to its great pace, editing and music will keep you absorbed for its whole duration. It deserves to be seen.
The Ice Road (2021)
Stretching the disbelief too far...
I understand that in action movies of this type, the viewer must resort to the good old suspension of disbelief, but this piece of garbage is taking it too far. The special Fxs were done by a rookie intern (that avalanche takes me back at least 20 years), the acting is sub par at best, the bad guys are laughable, the action is moronic, the trucks defy all the laws of physics in the universe, and poor Gurty died in the silliest way after all that he had done. Neeson is in trouble if he keeps accepting these fiascos.
Ava (2020)
Hideous
As much as I like Jessica Chastain, this was painful to watch. Someone tried to jump into the "powerful" feminist assassin bandwagon alas John Wick, but failed miserably. The story is absurd. The plot is full of holes and predictable. From the first scenes you can't believe Chastain's character is what they are trying to sell us. She doesn't have the physique, the dexterity and the technique to be a full metal assassin. It's just unbelievable. Even her acting is sub par. The lame and slow choreography of the fight scenes makes things even worse. Big names like Malcovich or Davies just got onboard to cash their much need covid-relief check. This is a lousy movie. It's a bad copy of a copy of a copy. Makes John Wick (which is mediocre at best) look like a Scorcese film. Ava could end up being 2020's worst. Stay away. Or maybe just watch it to see how bad cinema can be.
Ozark (2017)
Great great show. Except season 3
I won't write about S1 or S2. They were incredible. The building pace, the arc and development of the characters, the darkness, the brutality and unpredictability and, of course, the top notch acting. Season 3 is ok but I found myself fast forwarding many times. Darlene was left behind, the pregnant fed is nowhere as interesting as Batty. Also, the brother side story took too much time which could have been dedicated to more interesting characters or situations. I found that too much of Helen also destroyed her aura and menacing presence. Navarro's actor is far from being as good and imposing as the guy who plays Del Rio. Season 3 has too much talking, boring plot and could (and should) have gone into a darker, brutal and more interesting direction. Still, the Ozarks is a top notch tv crime/drama.
VFW (2019)
Pure fun! But could be better
Love siege movies. This one is an obvious tribute to Carpenter + the gore. It even has a Carpenter like ostinatto synth music at the beginning which establishes the menacing mood as in Assault On Precint 13. Still, the movie falls short in every aspect. The cast is good but their performance is shaky. Lang, more than anyone, is the weakest. The guy who plays the ranger is also bad. The mood is also destroyed by some mediocre continutiy. One moment a dear friend of theirs die and the next they are all laughing and delivering tacky lines. At this point in the movie, the music turns into obnoxious generic sounds. While the gore is there, the dark images prevent us from seeing it and enjoying it (a recourse to hide low budget effects maybe?). Still, it is fun to watch, the great William Sadler is in it, and it's a great (although poorly executed) Carpenter tribute.
Black and Blue (2019)
Lousy training day wannabe
This movie is just a lousy Training Day wannabe but, even though the story is gripping, it lacks everything which makes Denzel Washington's movie so great and realistic. It even mimics both the bath scene and the good vs bad main character showdown at the end of the movie but in a badly directed way. It feels cheap and rushed. Main lead girl is one dimensional and her shouting is annoying as hell. Grillo is ok but he is always Grillo. Police procedures are a joke and the plot holes are too many to take this seriously. Want a realistic and serious movie? Stay away from this...
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
An endless boring violence
This is the perfect example of when you don't have anything interesting to say or show except violent fighting which is so repetitive and long, it lacks shock. The movie tries to be interesting, deep and intelligent. It fails in every direction. There is nothing like John Wick episode 1. This endless franchise will only prove that the film industry ruins everything in the name of money.
Extinction (2018)
Netflix should stop trying to make sci fi movies
Many reviewers have said it all. The plot of the movie is not that interesting and full of gaps (why is the extinction taking place, why is only one human feeling empathy for the synthetics, what the "aliens" side of the story is, etc.). The performance is ok. Not great but decent. U can feel the effort of a dad to save his family. But it feels unreal. The family walks all the time, the girls screaming is irritating. The twist is ok but since it is not fully developed, it lacks substance.
Overall, the movie feels rushed, badly written and executed and most of all, cheap. The landscapes, the clothes, the bad cgi futuristic feel, that hideous last scene with the train, and so on.
It's not good. In the same way previous Netflix sci fi movie with Natalie portman wasn't good. Not everyone can make Blade Runner. Netflix should stop trying...
Desearás al hombre de tu hermana (2017)
This is what happens when cinema is done without love
This movie could be best described as what we Argentinians call a "bazofia" (piece of shit). Our cinema is funded by a corrupt organisation called INCAA which never heps developing or underground artists who have interesting proposals to offer. No. Instead, it finances mediocre directors such as Diego Kaplan who as an opportunist, casts a model who has been lately in the news because of an affair she was victim to. The problem is, the girl can´t act, she is stiff, unexpresive almost to the point of making you cringe. The rest of the cast is no better (well, maybe a tad better). The movie tries to be controversial, sensual and a little pervert but fails in every department. It is not even soft porn.
Bearing a failed composition taken from vintage love novels, the movie takes the fight of feminism and insults it in very way. The representation is shameful and so is the script, the "humour", the "drama" and everything else. This is really a hideous spectacle.
I can't begin to imagine the feeling of hundreds of talented Argentinian cinematographers who have to see movies like this being made and exported while their budget is not even enough to finish their productions. Meanwhile, the arts institute of Argentina (INCAA) run by ignorants, money grabbers and corrupt politicians is looking for the next yellow celebrity to produce in a haste the next horror show.
