Mainkar Chipay (2020)
Watch it only for Afron Nisho
The plot is wafer-thin . The characters are all one-dimensional, except a few bright glimpses here and there. It can well understood that the budget was extremely less, however, much could have been done based on this premise itself.
It doesn't translate well enough to the viewers of other languages mostly due to excessive reference droppings . I have seen a lot of brilliant products coming out of Bdesh in the last few years, this is certainly not one of them.
If these reviews make you think you're up for something great, you'll be highly disappointed. If you have very low expectations, you might still like it.
Bosta (2005)
Piece of art !
One has to love one's roots deeply to write such a beautiful poetry. It is hard to believe that this the Director's first work. Except for the editing, nothing can be complained about the movie. This is my first Lebanese movie as a Bengali from India . I am in love already !
Teenkahon (2014)
A bloody masterpiece!
One of the finest acting ever done by Rituparna, Ashish Vidyarthi, Sabyasachi, and Joy; not to speak of the child-actor of the first story . The last story is the ultimate culmination of what has been building up. Bauddhayan excels in holding the audience with whatever pace the stories deserve.
Dear Maya (2017)
Underrated Slow-Burning Gem
Sunaina Bhatnagar has worked as the assistant director to Imtiaz Ali for 3 movies, and when she directs her first, you can see the effect Imtiaz in each of her framing, lighting, set design and emotions ! With a masterclass performance by two debutantes and a legend, Sunaina has pulled off a heart warming story.
If you're looking for a simple story to make you feel good about life, and if you love slow-burns, this movie is a gem!
Mere Pyare Prime Minister (2018)
Dowdy and unpretentious, exactly as it should be
The genius of a Master is in making the audience forget that they are actually watching the work of a Master !
It is totally beyond my understanding how a Legend like Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra can make a movie that appears like a Student Project !!
"Mere Pyare Prime Minister" has surprised me in the simplest way possible - by not trying to surprise at all.
He should write a book on how to shoot movies at different budget levels.
The Hungry (2017)
One of the finest adaptations of Shakespeare ever!
The Sound-mixing, the editing, the cinematography, and the production design will baffle you as you keep getting equally mesmerised and shocked to the point of numbness. Terrifiic! This will be in my list of top 3 best adaptations of Shakespeare , with 'Haider' and 'Hrid Majhare' .
Memories in March (2010)
One of the finest movies ever in the history of Cinema
Before watching Chitrangada, I have always felt that no movie of a human being falling in love with another human being can touch me deeper than Brokeback Mountain. Now after watching Memories in March, I have come to the realisation that all these stories should be read together. There is simply no comparison. Nogorkirton, Arekti Premer Golpo..all these should be watched alongside. It tells a complete story.
Chitrangada (2012)
The finest bengali love story ever made
This genre required as much a subtle love that only Ang Lee could as it required the dramatic turmoils that only Rituparno Ghosh could bring on screen. It's an all time best of the genre, at par with Brokeback Mountain if not beyond .
Dear Zindagi (2016)
This movie is a self-therapy
I am clueless how can people bash such a beautiful movie. I watched it during a very tumultous time and it act like a therapy for me. I thank Gauri Shinde for gifting us this .
Ghuddi (1980)
Way ahead of time !
A very smart screenplay considering that it is from the 80s Bangladesh. Brilliant cinematography, supported by the beautiful melodies of Lucky Akhond. To top it, the graceful beauty of Suborna Mustafa and the raw presence of Asad .
The movie is exactly how experimental cinema needs to be presented to commercial audience. I wish more people saw the movie.
Prem Tame (2021)
Bengal's 500DoS or VCB
Extremely underrated by regular movie-goers in search of stupid old love stories. This movie is the beginning of new-wave bengali rom-com. This is perhaps the first bengali rom-com where the Manic-Pixie-Dream-Girl trope has been given a character of flesh-and-blood like Summer of 500DoS. The backdrop being a Portuguese/Dutch colony of Chandernagore may also be a tribute to Vicky-Christina-Barcelona which matches with the nuances of the central characters in this movie thematically.
And the showstealer? Khogen, the mongrel.
This movie maturely handles the three types of love in Pablo's life. One that is conditional but settling, one that is unbounded but unsettling and one that is unbounded and unconditional .
Are you excited to see how it goes with Pablo?
