Isn't It Romantic (2019)
For what it is, how do you get any better?
Here you have a movie that makes fun of the materialistic concept of love on the outside while focusing on a very deep and uplifting message at the end.
Of course it's not going to be the best at every genre because it's not trying to be, but I loved how all the materialism surrounding love and success was mocked and by the end the characters existed without the need for validation from external sources.
Venom (2018)
Don't believe the negative reviews.
This movie proved to me that people have developed a tribe mentality when it comes to reviewing movies. If they see enough people insulting something or critiquing it and giving it a poor assessment they want to join that tribe and start insulting the subject too. Almost like some cases of bullying, which is ironic because the main character in this movie gets bullied a lot and ends up down on his luck.
This movie is great, it doesn't feel too long, the story is easy to follow, it doesn't need 389754987 characters like every other superhero movie these days and came to a nice conclusion. The effects are nice and the actors aren't as cringe inducing as in most other super hero movies.
Also it doesn't rely on wise crack jokes every 10 seconds which seems to be what every comic book movie is doing these days but it is funny at certain times and even had my son laughing.
Go see it, much better than the super hero nonsense that is being force fed to us every month elsewhere.
If you trust the bad reviews simply search this movies reception, it crushed at the box office...if it was so horrible it wouldn't have set worldwide records.
My Scientology Movie (2015)
The irony of being more insane than the insane group you are making a documentary about.
Horrible.
There was a certain scene that ruined this for me and exposed the film makers as being worse than the group they are 'investigating'. There was a woman in public with a single camera man and the director of this film pesters her with questions. She doesn't have to answer them and is obviously not comfortable.
He persists and follows her around, he then pesters her cameraman with questions. When she says she wants to leave he chases her down and starts yelling at her to come back and to stop running away. What a psycho.
The camera pans out and you see the scene unfold. The director has a crew of camera men and sound guys so he has a party of about five, chasing a woman who is with a single cameraman and minding her own business but since she may work for the Scientologists she MUST be crazy right?
If someone is going to make a movie about how certain religious groups harass, manipulate and stalk others perhaps they should not conduct those behaviors themselves.
Creep director, who harasses apparent 'harassers'. The apparent 'harassers' being 5'2 quiet blonde women. Ridiculous.
Hell or High Water (2016)
A solid film! Refreshing and engaging without relying on gimmicks.
I liked this movie for a few reasons. First of all this is a good movie. Some movies depend on who is watching it or who the movie is geared towards, well even if you do not like this movie...you will still think it is well done, well acted, perfectly executed and gripping. Even if the genre does not appeal to you at all the movie is so obviously well done that it is very hard to dislike.
That being said there were strong characters, compelling action sequences, lots of moral philosophy thrown in and ideas such as 'is it worth stealing if you are doing it out of a loving and financial obligation to your family'.
Also refreshing that this movie was not riddled with smart phones, laptops, social networking and similar situations. I get that it is a part of our culture but it is more interesting to use technological devices than watch actors pretend to use them, strong story without any need for gadgets computers or computer generated special effects.
Go watch it!
True Memoirs of an International Assassin (2016)
Best in class. 10 out of 10
I give this movie a perfect rating and here is why. I think movies should be judged in terms of what they set out to succeed. Movies should be judged within their own genres. There are few movies that exist that incorporate every genre and viewers should not expect a movie to be all things at once.
That being said...this movie incorporates two genres, those genres being action and comedy. Withing the action-comedy genre this movie is completely without fault. This movie tries to succeed at being an action comedy and it does succeed, brilliantly.
Hilarious male lead with his usual brand of slapstick humor but this time in a less self depreciating way, I like his brand of humor in an action setting, no fat jokes and more stylish action choreography. Good chemistry with the believably badass female lead. I do not know if she used a body double for the fight scenes but it was impressive either way. There are multiple villains and you never know which one is truly bad or good so there are some nice little twists there.
I grew up in the 80s and lived on action flicks so this movie was awesome! Also I am not a fan of endless sex jokes and crude humor and this movie had non of it, just hilarious situations and slapstick action comedy at its best!
I will not give away to much of the story because it is pretty simple to follow. Go watch it!
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Simply NOT a classic. Does not age well.
I am doing a 2016 review of this movie. I was a child when this movie came out and I personally loved it at that time. I am reviewing this movie now in 2016 for the young generation of today.
I have a young son and his two friends were over, we were looking through movies to watch and they all decided on this. We got maybe 20 minutes in and the CHILDREN...not me, decided to turn it off. This movie simply does not stand the test of time.
Some have said the animation is very good...well by the standard of today it is not, also gauging by the kids reactions the first comments were 'this looks old'. The camera is jerky and hard to watch, the scenes are all dark and bland,"halloween town" looks like a little cardboard set (not in a cool stop motion animation type of way). The animation department could never fit more than a few characters on the screen at the same time.
I do not really know how this movie became some cult phenomenon but watching it with children in 2016 it is flat and boring. The animation is underwhelming and stale. I like the songs but the kids did not.
I give it one out of ten because children will simple be bored with a movie like this now. We switched the choice to Power Rangers Christmas and they all liked that a lot more.
Chugyeokja (2008)
Viewer beware! You will waste two hours.
Hi everyone. So at first this movie seemed great. Solid acting, good opening, nice pacing, and then after about 30 minutes in the movie makes a turn for the worst.
The entire last hour and a half of the movie are ridiculous, completely unbelievable garbage. The main killer is caught, and get this...for no reason at all...they free him almost immediately.
It literally makes no sense at all. In the movie they act as if there is no proof of his deeds, although there is heaps of proof. They collected DNA evidence, they found that he beat a kid with a hammer three years prior, the way he conducted the murders matches the case descriptions exactly, he stole a car and he has called all of the missing girls.
I was so angry at the end of the movie. I just wasted two hours with a movie about catching a brutal killer...he is caught...and then...lets just set him free to kill yet again in his unpatrolled empty neighborhood in broad daylight and then he walks back home to bury more dead bodies. RIDICULOUS!!!
If you want to waste two hours with a ridiculous story about a murderer being treated like a princess, watch this.
Bullitt (1968)
Bullitt is boring!
This movie had all the elements involved in any great film, although nothing quite fit properly for the entire run time.
It is comparable to a head chef buying all the top ingredients to make an amazing dish, then he calls in sick and someone has to fill in for him who doesn't know how to cook and ruins everything.
That is what I thought of through the last half of Bullitt. The acting is great, the cops do not show many emotions but that is fine, that is how a cop should be. The bad guys are mysterious and violent. Tthe female love interest is believable. Tthe story is moving along nicely...then the movie drags out another hour, without anything happening and then without anything resolved...it ends.
You do not find out who the bad guys were, you do not know why they were after the key witness, you do not know enough about the main characters love interest or what part she plays in the movie, the Senator character is not really explained. The crime organization is not explained at all. It is perhaps the most open ended movie I have ever seen.
No part of the story is resolved or even concludes, and then when the main character finally finds this important key witness character, he shoots him to death and then the credits roll. What the hell happened????
Zoolander 2 (2016)
Great movie, funny, ridiculous, and a good critique of the self obsessed world of today!
This movie was great, despite the bad reviews I decided to give it a chance. It definitely surprised me and now I understand all the bad reviews, this movie is so honest with the way that it insults and makes fun of modern ways of thinking and current events, I loved it. Other people might get offended, but I found it refreshing.
From making fun of people with bad tattoos that think they are great because it is 'cool'...to displaying our obsession with social media, and selfie culture, I thought it was genuinely funny.
It is funny in the beginning when a character dies but feels the need to take a photo of it right before they pass to post on instagram, haha. Seriously I interact with people like this every day, who when tragedy strikes all they can think of is how to turn it into a facebook post.
The hipster character was great, what an accurate display of the shallow way of thinking and acting, how it is cool and trendy to speak poorly and use slang that does not even make sense.
I am surprised by the low rating, I liked all the cameos and thought the story was hilarious. At first the story was ridiculous but in the end Mugatu says something like 'You actually believed all that crap?' Implying that the movie was almost a parody of itself.
Smart, funny movie, stop taking movies so seriously and laugh a little people!
Hush (2016)
Awful, that's all I have to say.
This movie is about a home invasion. The main character is deaf and has to deal with an idiot intruder who has zero motive. She runs around aimlessly while he tries to get in.
Although he has no problem randomly murdering people and trashing the main characters car, for some reason he refuses to break any windows, doors, or force entry at the household. He paces around outside for most of the movie.
I have no idea why a deaf woman who is single would live in an isolated area alone, and not even lock her doors at night. Also if you are living in isolation in a forest you would have at least some weapon or alarm system with police notification and emergency power system. ESPECIALLY if you were deaf!!
Upon realizing he has violent intentions she...instead of arming herself, grabs her lipstick and writes him notes on the window about her non existent boyfriend to try and scare the intruder.
To sum it up this movie was filled with plot holes and lacked substance. There were tons of useless scenes that did not contribute to the plot at all. If you manage to sit through the whole thing you will come to realize that no plot ever does develop and no aspect of the movie was explained beyond the basic premise.
2 out of ten, I bumped the rating from one since the movie had a short runtime. Avoid at all costs.
The Invitation (2015)
I hated it, then gave it a chance and it pulled itself together!
I actually turned this movie off after the first half an hour. It had all the cliché characters you would expect at a movie party, the flirty whore, the well groomed gay couple, the shy blonde who just wants to cuddle and the couple who found new meaning to life after traveling the world....which is all fine but these people are supposed to be in their thirties.
Maybe those party stereotypes would be realistic if they were in highschool. They even play highschool games similar to truth or dare and end up awkwardly making out with one another.
Then after an hour and twenty minutes things get crazy and the movie actually becomes very urgent, tense and frighteningly believable.
So after the first 30 minutes I skipped to the end, and I thought the ending was acted so well and the last scene was so well done that I had to go back and sit through the entire thing. Upon doing this the characters annoyed me less, because although they were extremely irritating and flirty and drunk they were well acted characters and they were believable. I guess that people like this must exist somewhere, and with such an insane ending I had to force myself through the build up.
The main character also is acted really well and was not very annoying and actually acted realistically, it was refreshing to see the main character not just cry and run from his attackers, he fought back and refused to go down without a fight. He was also skeptical and sensed that something was wrong early on, which is so rare in horror movies, I really liked his outspoken accusations and tantrums.
So in summary, if you can make it past the first thirty minutes the end is quite the payoff, and try not to be too annoyed by the supporting characters and just focus on the main couple.
The Trust (2016)
A attention grabbing heist movie, with chemistry and a quick pace!
I enjoyed this movie, it was funny and smart and nicely paced. There were a couple plot holes that brought the movie down a couple stars for me like...how did they position the drill to read the safe so accurately?
Even with the plots holes the movie was fun to watch.
A few reviewers are complaining about the ending, well it wasn't that bad, maybe it did not play out how anyone who watches it had hoped, or people assume that it will end one way and then it veers off into another direction, but it was still well done and wrapped up the characters story lines.
I thought this was a fun watch, it had me glued to the screen and I found the main characters crazy and spontaneous and a little self destructive, which made for some tense scenes.
The ending did not really make much sense, the pair already have committed murder, then Elijah Woods character gets anxious and calls off the whole thing because he is nervous about stealing diamonds. I do not think that if you are OK going along with murder, that diamonds would make you nervous.
Overall a good watch. Go see it.
Forsaken (2015)
A great western!!, and I am a harsh critic of modern movies
I highly recommend this movie to anyone interested in westerns or anyone who wants to watch a nicely developed story that is not driven by special effects or flashy montages.
This movie is a slow burn, with beautiful scenery and decent acting all around. The story is very simple to follow yet still interesting enough to keep you anticipating and wondering about the outcome.
Keiffer Sutherland plays a retired gunman looking to live a simple life with his aging father, although there is a local brute who is forcing towns folk from their homes by using violence and intimidation. Should Keiffer pick up his guns and fight back? Or strive to live a life of non-violence and pacifism. It is up to you to watch and find out.
If you like period pieces and westerns you will very much enjoy this movie. It is not perfect, there are a couple badly delivered lines, but other than that I was immensely drawn to the southern scenery and plight of the characters in the movie.
I assume that this movie did not get great reviews because these days the average critic or audience member are not impressed by slow moving historical movies without flashy special effects. That said, I am very interested in period pieces and dramatic movies that rely on acting and tension without all the excess.
A great refreshing movie! Watch it!
How I Met Your Mother (2005)
In disbelief that anyone enjoys this.
This is the worst show I have ever had to sit through. I did not know what it was about, it was on at my house so I gave it a chance.
This show is nothing but ENDLESS and I mean endless sex jokes. Which doesn't offend me in any way, I would just be rather having sex than watching a show where every single episode is nonstop sex talk. I do not even understand the humor in it, perhaps this show is for single people who are needy and alone so they enjoy all the sex jokes and talk about hooking up and endless scene after scene of guys hitting on girls. Realize this show is fiction and that you are wasting your time watching actors pretend to flirt with each other for eight straight seasons, it makes me sick.
If you absolutely have to arouse yourself with sexual entertainment watch porn. I find it quite pathetic that anyone in a relationship would be entertained by this show about five characters who in hundreds of episodes talk about nothing but sex. Seriously if this entertains you then go make love to your wife or husband and stop watching this garbage.
I tried to give it another chance and the episode that played was about one character having sex with enough girls to fill a bingo scorecard....what the hell is the appeal of watching this exactly??
For teenagers or single people.
The Visit (2015)
When I thought it couldn't get any worse...it did
Horrible movie.
I do not understand how anyone could sit through the entire thing, I had to skip through it because it was so awful.
Two children visit their deranged grandparents and film the entire thing. Turns out the grandparents are murderers yet the idiot children still make a movie about them and film themselves even after getting a diaper full of sh*t mushed in their faces.
What makes it even worse is after having a diaper full of sh*t thrown in one of the main characters faces he raps about how it tasted while dressed like a rap artist as his sister looks on laughing. Yes you read that correctly, a boy eats an elderly mans fecal matter and raps about it.
Unrealistic. Even upon finding out that these elderly people are not their grandparents, they stay and play Yahtzee with them, they also have endless opportunities to escape and instead go back to film these people
3½ Minutes, Ten Bullets (2015)
For what it is. This Documentary is perfect.
It is hard to review a documentary based around the killing of an individual. Considering film is almost always a form of entertainment it is hard to imagine being entertained by something as grim as this.
With that said, this is a great documentary, it shows both sides equally and allows the viewer to form their own opinions on the incident that the film is based on. Too many documentaries are biased or create their own 'facts' when dealing with their subject matter. This was different. Go watch it!
It is everything a documentary should be, an unbiased view at the world recorded through the camera that leaves the viewer with their own thoughts and ideas that are not the directors thoughts or ideas but original concepts that we have adopted through watching an honest piece of film making.
Amy (2015)
Nauseating
If you want to feel sick from watching a woman in her twenties drink and smoke for two hours then pass out and deal with hangovers watch this.
For having a two hour run time I find it unsettling that the film makers chose so much footage of Amy indulging in excess alcohol and drugs. They would even play normal looking footage in slow motion to give her a drunk look. Horrible character development, scene after scene of her drunk.
I assume they feel the average person loves seeing drunk celebrities so that why not fill the entire two hours with clips of her hammered. It actually at times had me feeling sick.
Even when friends talk about how she could make you feel good about yourself, the director then shows us a scene of her drunk and flirting with men. OK any drunk girl on a night out is going to be a little flirty, it does not mean that they deep down have a certain power to command affection, it means they are drunk and enjoying the company of others.
To sum it up, this movie was obviously made quickly, it expected to get positive reviews from a certain shock of seeing a drunk celebrity (not for me personally) and offers very little in terms of an accurate story of a persons life. The filmmakers really did not have enough content to make any sort of biography and it shows.
The Man in the High Castle (2015)
Good and at times laughably bad.
There are some good moments in this show. The costumes are nice, the locations are well done, a couple of the main characters can act (the trade minister and the main Nazi general).
The story is absolutely horrible. You have a girl who gets murdered for possessing a film and this girls sisters boyfriend gets tortured and his family murdered.
So after all this murder and torture you have the main character Juliana who has the film. You would imagine she would have to be cautious and hide and be reclusive and act secretively and covertly through the rest of the show to avoid getting murdered or tortured herself. She does the opposite. She runs around like an awkward idiot through the whole series, she gets caught numerous times and for some reason receives no punishment while other characters get sent to jail or murdered for next to nothing.
The lowest point was when the main character and one of her boyfriends are locked up and she says "oh no I missed my bus" and the boyfriend says "darn are you in some sort of trouble??"....of course she is in trouble she is locked up in a Yakuza cell hidden in some dank basement and all you two are worried about is her missing her bus???
The flaws are obvious and hard to sit through.
