Genesis: Paradise Lost (2017)
0/10 DON'T LISTEN TO THE POSITIVE REVIEWSS
Firstly, this is straight up NOT a documentary. The definition of a documentary is: "using pictures or interviews with people involved in real events to provide a factual report on a particular subject.". None of these people were involved in the events of the bible because they are known to be mythical stories upon which to loosely base some moral behaviour, and therefore not real events. If you want an audio book of the bible story with pretty pictures added, this is for you, otherwise, not recommended watching.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Slow, boring, predictable
Movie started off OK, waited for excitement that would never come from lead actors that showed no emotion of any kind. The scenes were slow and dragged out with pointless dialogue and irrelevant actions. Incorporating a couple B list actors to terminate their roles so predictably- why bother? They could have been excluded and it would not have effected the movie in any way. The ending made no sense. Blood was more realistic -being dry. Lots of cliché moments of 'no don't do that the zombies will get you'. And the repetition of the title song over and over almost made me think the movie was created to promote the song!
Malibu Rescue: The Next Wave (2020)
Cringey, childish and predictable
Target audience is moreso tween/early teen girls. Lots of really predictable cliché moments: 'boy gets girl', "we'll save the day", "arrogant male antagonist" and so on. Very cringey Australian references- why are Australians always represented so strangely in American movies? No one actually makes so many strange references to Australian animals in conversation except in misrepresented American movies. Even the Character names-Shazza, Wayno..I mean seriously.
Justice League (2017)
People don't rate fairly
One main reason I don't read reviews any more is because people have strong biases and silly reasons to down rate a good movie, and it's getting to the point it needs to stop. We seem to live in an era where it's considered 'cool' or normal to follow the pack and throw silly dirt on decent movies. However, after all the ridiculous things I had heard people complain about in this movie, I went into the cinema and was not disappointed! It was a great movie! I had to come back here and make sure the critics didn't destroy this one. I even read about the superman moustache issue beforehand, and not me, nor my partner nor anyone else I asked could see it! I tried really hard and just could not see it, yet that was a major thing people kept bringing up. Another complaint people had was the cliché plot- what do you expect? It's a superhero movie, and what do superheroes do best? Defeat villains of course! This is true of the comics as well. Pretty much all Marvel/DC movies and comics revolve around 'bad guy wreaks havoc and superheroes save the day'. Speaking of comics, people seem to down-rate movies that aren't clones of the comics, rather than viewing the movies as pieces inspired or driven by the comics, yet separate pieces of content. Then of course there are the ones that just can't accept new actors in the roles they had seen others in previously (e.g. The Flash TV actor, Smallville etc.)
Right, now all that is said, let's talk about the movie: it was a great movie. It did a good job of introducing each main character and establishing how they fit into the team/their backgrounds. Whilst many people are familiar with these characters, not everyone is, so it was a good move. There are some bloopers, and lots of action making it an enjoyable movie for many tastes. One point I do have to make is that in the movie, they make several mentions of the fact that Barry is a genius, yet the words he speaks and actions he takes give the impression he is not so much.
Aloha (2015)
Slow to start, does it ever get going?
I'm not sure why this has good reviews, although overall it has only a 5-star rating which is a more accurate representation. Started watching Aloha, and thought it was very slow to get going, to establish a plot and even just the general atmosphere of the movie was very lazy. There were a lot of random ideas and plot points thrown around which didn't really contribute to the main plot line at all, and were not revisited or expanded upon. The movie overall was a rather bland and even boring tale, which could have ended in around 20 minutes if not for the unrelated plot points. Not sure why it's classified as a 'rom-com' as there was nothing remotely comedic about the movie, and it wasn't much of a love story. It's the sort of movie you put on for movie night then fall asleep half way through, which would be easy, as there are no loud noises like in action movies.
Atlantis (2013)
Really good middle ground between humor and drama
Firstly, I'd like to say that, having read the bad reviews on IMDb, it's immediately obvious as to why you shouldn't base your viewing preferences on reviews. It's also obvious as to who knows nothing about Greek mythology (e.g. the reviews that say 'ridiculous characters'). Greek mythology is fantastical and I'm glad a TV series was written about it. The show actually followed many well- known events from the mythology (except had different people associated with them e.g. the minotaur slaying, Medusa turning etc) with the addition of Pythagoras (surely everyone knows Pythagorean theory in mathematics?)
Having been a long-time fan of Greek mythology, I really liked this show, and was glad to see it had been recently added to Netflix. I was really sad for it to end so abruptly where it did, as I felt there could have been so much more! Adventures across the sea on the Argo and drama with Medea, Ariadne and Pasiphae! The first few episodes started out a little more on the humor side, thanks to the Hercules (mostly), then the drama and character development got much deeper, even revealing other sides to Hercules, to be in its prime by the second season. Aside from a few parts where the writers left out scenes they should have included for more logical sequencing (e.g. when Ariadne became aware of Jason's parents), the writing was well done. The acting was also quite good. However, I must comment on the fact that Jason seemed to get knocked unconscious quite a lot after a single hit, yet later on we see him get hit several times and not fall. Bit of a logic fail there. There are many great themes of mate ship, betrayal, loyalty, love and more, as one would expect from a show about the adventures of a trio in a mythical land.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
It's a 50/50 sort of show
*Minor Spoilers* This show started off in an interesting way: they tell us how it ends, then each episode shows us how the ending came to be, bit by bit. It's the type of show where they leak a little bit of info at a time, to want you coming back to find out the rest. Overall, the cast did a great job executing their roles. Some scenes and themes were rather cringe worthy, however, and I didn't think they'd actually show a 'demonstration' of her final moments- but they did. The show was a bit of an emotional roller coaster- first curiosity then anger then sadness and annoyance and anger then sadness (to tears). I also find it really frustrating in shows where the viewer can see the obvious next steps a character should take if they were in that position, but they do not take these obvious steps. They choose the option which will create the most drama/pain/suffering which is presented several times in this show. In real life, people typically don't choose the worst possible option given a choice, choices like ones Clay had, like Hannah had, like all the other characters had. For some, this show may represent an accurate depiction of high school life. For the majority of us, however, this show depicts overly dramatized events and a girl (Hannah) who, made a series of decisions, not well thought out, and blamed everyone else for it. Sure, bullying is bad, but for the large part, Hannah was not bullied, she let everything go to her head far too much. Tyler was obviously bullied by comparison, but not Hannah. Several 'reasons why' were plain ridiculous and just teenage dating drama that millions went through and are still alive and well today. You grow up and realize that not everyone matures as fast as you, and certain behaviours you thought were 'bullying', may not be seen that way by others e.g. rating your behind as best in the school is not bullying. Reason 9 did not have a direct impact on you- it impacted Jessica. Reason 10- you threatened Sherri with the police then she left you because of it. Reason 8- no one knew it was your poem- it was signed anonymous. Just like reason 4- no one knew it was you until you went on about it. Reason 7 is plain petty. After all is said and done, there are only about 5, maybe 6 reasons why. You then sat by quietly while your friend was raped, and saying something could have prevented him doing it again...to you! You then let your rapist get away with his crime by saying nothing....again! SMH! You were worried about your parents' financial problems...how does causing them grief and money in legal fees after your death help them??! You pushed away the 1 person you liked- you literally yelled at him to leave you alone, then you were sad he left you alone? No wonder men think women are crazy!
Happily N'Ever After (2006)
Cute kids' movie
Why so much hate? This is a cute, colourful and amusing children's movie, with some well-known voice actors, which takes a look at what would happen if the fairy tales didn't have their happy ending. The animation, voice actors and other aspects are no better or worse than other movies of the same era. It's not a fantastic movie (few are), but it's certainly not as horrible as these negative reviews suggest- there was even a sequel. I notice a lot of people comparing it to Shrek, yet can't see why? Aside from the fact both movies share a few characters taken from the years-old stories (as do many other movies before Shrek's time, yet Shrek isn't criticized for 'ripping off' those characters), there's really not a lot in common with the 2 movies. I was not reminded of Shrek watching Happily N'ever after. Worth a watch with your kids who are familiar with the classic fairy tales.
