Le règne animal (2023)
Really interesting and thought provoking
Caught this at the Sci Fi Day of Leeds Film Festival 2023. Like most good Science fiction it's got me thinking and reflecting on the modern issues explored by proxy. It's sort of an ecological anti-othering of different people and a great father and son bonding film.
I don't want to spoil any of the plot which is great. But for me, this film has a rarely seen perfect casting. The son is superb all gangly pout, angst and joy and sympathy. Together his father and him have a spot on relationship and great chemistry.
Every other member of the cast esp his school chums really fit their roles to a T. Ps also loved Fix and Froggy. The make up effects are fantastic too.
This one is going to stay with me for a while.
The Woman in the White Car (2022)
Plot Dense Female led Thriller
I saw this at the 2022 London Film Festival and it was my favourite of 25+ films. It's amazing this was shot in less than three weeks and was the first film of a Korean Tv Director .
It's so clever intricate and unexpected. All three leads are fantastic. It's the film that the director most likes to watch, and I agree.
I recommend if you liked Fargo, or The Usual suspects.
It is cleverly plotted and shows a snowy side to Korea that you maybe were not expecting.
There are a lot of plot elements that deliciously develop as you watch the film.
I also would recommend Glass Onion and The Menu..
La maschera (1988)
Beautiful Film , Guilty pleasure.
The cinematography is stunning. Eighteenth Century Italian summers of love have never looked more languorously beautiful. Which is helped by the breathtaking beauty of both the young Michael Maloney and Helena Bonham Carter ( Still equally beautiful now of course). Each scene and plot development is presented as a marvellous jewel, which sometimes lifts you away from Fflly engaging with the characters..
It is dubbed into Italian with subtitles, which although understandable is a shame given the young leads vocal and acting talents
Plot wise It's a bit of a flimsy thing, a dissolute handsome young nobleman, realising he can only win the admiration of the beautiful and interesting young actress he fancies, by revealing his true nature by device of almost mystical/ magical masks.
It's to be taken lightly and romantically, the supporting cast fit perfectly into the plot and setting.
The perfect film to escape into a romantic rose tinted Italy but it wouldn't do to stay there too long.
