Redirected (2014)
Not Bad (Maybe)
Redirected is a story along the lines of Snatch, set in Lithuania.
The plot is sort of on a bell curve, the beginning being not the best, and the ending being pretty awful. The dark comedy and action found within the bulk of the movie is what put my rating up to 7 stars.
I'm trying my best to avoid spoilers, and most of the movie carries some weight tied to the plot, so I'm just going to skip this bit on fear of being blacklisted.
The sound is another complaint that a lot of people had. I wasn't paying much attention and as such didn't have much problem with it. This might be what brought my review up a bit more.
Now for the people who won't like this movie and what they can watch instead:
If you can't stand a solid 10-15 minutes of rather boring introductory plot, I'd say this movie isn't for you. Instead, try "Snatch" or "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels". (For movies of a similar feel that pick up a bit more quickly)
If you really can't stand the lack of sound, I'd again suggest "Snatch" and "Moonwalkers"
If you're not a fan of Darker Action-Comedies, a solid alternative would be "Kung Fury" or "Naked Gun".
Finally, if you aren't an action oriented person, a non action-y movie that is more Dark in its Dark Comedy would be "Trainspotting". Also good.
Mr. Nobody (2009)
Hard to Explain.
Let me start by saying that this movie is really up there with my favorites. Yup.
Mr. Nobody is a rather introspective movie about a man who remembers his life three different ways. Under fear of blacklist, I'll try to stay off any spoilers.
The movie is rather introspective, with good acting, good score, and an interesting overall story. It has a brilliant visual style, and a good 7 or 8 twists within it.
Now, for the list of reasons you wouldn't want to watch this, and titles you could check out instead.
Aren't a fan of live action stuff, but still want a well scored, well written existential story? Try Don Hertzfeldt's "It's Such a Beautiful Day".
Want a faster moving film, but one that still deals with memory and retains a good amount of twists? Try "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" by Michel Gondry
Movie isn't confusing enough for you? "Primer" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" might suit you. (Yes, this is a joke complaint. Yes, These are good movies that combat said joke complaint)
The Birth of a Nation (1915)
It's a disgusting, disturbing, awful, beautiful movie.
So, let's get the part where I tell you about this movie out of the way. Birth of a Nation is a story following well... pretty much the KKK. This movie is 90 years old, so some amazing amounts of racism are to be expected, although even then it caught people off guard. It's really racist, horrible, vile, disgusting, so on, so forth. But the influential nature of the movie, as well as the very amazing acting, design, and cinematography behind it. So overall, this isn't really a movie that you watch because you agree with the subject matter and morals behind the movie. You watch it because it's a landmark in cinema, a well made movie.
