Beau Is Afraid (2023)
Ari Aster's Babylon It's Not
I love Hereditary. Absolutely love it. Midsommar, not so much. I thought it was too bloated and uninteresting. Beau is better than Midsommar. It's a completely different film. It's absurd cinema to the fullest, but that's okay. I was onboard for the 1st 2 hours of this anxiety ridden nightmare. It was funny and batshit and I hoped it would continue to be until the very last frame. And it wasn't. It's almost as if Ari went against everything he gave us for the first two full hours. He suddenly made an attempt to explain every absurd frame in his film. He swung for the fences, but he came up short of the homer. At least Chazelle stuck the landing with Babylon.
Christmas Bloody Christmas (2022)
All I want for X-Mas is for Santa to kill them all!
This is a low budget movie that fails at every corner. It takes forever to get to it, about 30+ minutes. The dialogue leading up to the 1st kill was atrocious and aimless between the most annoying group of 20-somethings I've ever encountered in a movie. There's more F-bombs than any QT film! I couldn't wait for RoboSanta to execute them all and quickly, especially the female lead. The script was lacking in atmosphere and character likability. The look of the movie was nice. Probably the only reason I gave it 2 stars. This could've been something along the lines of Terrifier, but it lacked good direction and good special effects.
Infinity Pool (2023)
Mia is a Maniacal Treasure
I went into this one not expecting much since I'm not exactly a fan of Brandon's previous films. But Infinity Pool is his best work to date. This is a great film. The pacing is great and the script is tight. The acting from Mia is phenomenal. She has quickly become a force and my favorite female maniac. I'm praying Matt Reeves casts her as Harley Quinn in his Batman Universe. She would be perfect. Pool is Mia's movie. Everyone is good, but this is her movie and she is mesmerizing in every scene. What a performance. I can't wait for MaXXXine to see what she does with it. Now this flick is not perfect by any stretch, but it extremely solid. Great score and cinematography as well. I think Brandon has a finally found his momentum and I'm looking forward to his future films. If you're a fan of his dad or Lynch, I would highly recommend Infinity Pool.
God Is a Bullet (2023)
God Is An Aimless Bullet
The trailer showed so much promise. Good cast. Good premise. It was dressed up as a 70s gritty revenge flick, but it was all misleading. The 2.5 hour runtime is not justified. The script is a mess -- hopefully it wasn't written by AI. I wouldn't be surprised if it was. The acting was decent enough. Maika and Jaime Lannister came to play, but even they couldn't save this aimless mess. The characters are one-dimensional and ultimately we're not invested in them. Even the bad guys are lame. I'm not scared simply because they have their faces covered in ink. The geography of the movie was also confusing. I couldn't tell where we were half the time -- Mexico or California? The only thing I enjoyed was the violence. It's a bloody film. A tad over the top, but bloody nonetheless. Nick's direction was lackluster and that's putting it lightly, but it's not entirely his fault. It all comes down to the script. The writing was simply not there. It felt like a 1st draft. Whoever greenlit this should be applying for EDD right now. And let's not talk about the many "endings" this had. It felt like Return of the King with it's never-ending endings. In closing, a regretful waste of $10 and 2.5 hours of my life.
Monday (2017)
Thank YOU, DT.
Finally a true and accurate representation of Los Angeles and all its colors and cultures! And what a debut! Wow. This short had more heart than most feature length movies out there. It's simple: Monday has the SOUL of L.A. It was authentic and not some Hollywood product. Dinh is a talented filmmaker and writer. This one reminded me of yet another Asian filmmaker that I knew would blow up when I first saw his short film, "Victoria Para Chino" -- Cary Fukunaga. The talent is there and honestly, we need more Asian storytellers. Period. But I do have one complaint amongst all these accolades,... I wanted MORE Monday! Ha! It needs to be a feature. Plain and simple. Or a series. Wink, wink.
This one needs to be seen by EVERYONE. It's a wonderful narrative about family, friends, mischief, and trouble around the corner. But most importantly, it's an L.A. story and the city itself is as important as any character in the film.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
Tom Ford should stick to what he knows: Fashion Design
There won't be any spoilers in this review...
I'm sorry but this movie is not very good. Tom Ford clearly does not know how to direct a movie. It was a convoluted mess from the onset. The script wasn't any better either. It didn't make sense and quite honestly, I didn't care for any of the characters. They were a bunch of annoying white rich people with no relatable problems. I think that the only reason Tom Ford got all these A-List actors to be in his movie is 'cos he knows them from his fashion designer days. Otherwise, this woulda easily been a B-movie with B-movie talent. The performances were good, but even a good performance can't save a shitty movie. The style of the movie was weird as well. It looked like a glossy 90's music video. The best thing about the movie, aside from it ending, was Michael Shannon who is good in everything.
I would say skip this movie and spend the 2 1/2 hours of your life doing something else.
Fender Bender (2016)
Great 80's slasher throwback
Mark Pavia's long-awaited return is finally here and it's as if he never left. He didn't miss a step since his vampire cult classic: The Night Flier. Fender Bender is a much simpler story, but that's what's great about it. Pavia is not trying to reinvent the genre. He is simply paying tribute to the great slasher flicks of the 1980's and he nailed it perfectly. This is a slasher flick and PROUD of it. If you're expecting It Follows or Lights Out this movie is NOT for you. Move along and don't hate! There's nothing supernatural here. This is a maniac on the loose killing for the pure enjoyment of it. No excuses. Fender Bender is cinematic, atmospheric, and the score will surely make John Carpenter proud. This is what you get with Fender Bender. Great job, Mr. Pavia. Welcome back.
