The Black Rose (1950)
One of the worst romantic pairings ever!
Overall, this is a fairly good picture with beautiful color and the reliable male actors all performed as expected. The movie has a satisfying historical plot and fascinating scenery but the movie goes so wrong once the heroine is introduced. According to Ben Mankiewicz she was an important French find. Unfortunately, she is extremely irritating and acts like a very young, irresponsible child. She is not a good match for the much older Tyrone Power and it's very hard to believe he could possibly have any real affection for her. Despite enjoying Tyrone Power and Jack Hawkins immensely, the French chipmunk-cheeked girl made us fast forward to the ending.
Perry Mason (2020)
Abominable!
Awful, absolutely awful. It bears NO resemblance to the well defined and decent characters of Erle Stanley Gardener's creation. It's a mockery. This is not art; it is excrement.
Unforgotten (2015)
Totally predictable and awful
This was so predictable from the very first episode (S:1) But we continued to watch thinking that the writing wouldn't really be that lazy and biased. It was. Nothing new here: overly long drawn out shots of emoting (boring) and the standard politically correct tropes: gays are good, blacks are good and white people, especially Christians, are evil- unless and until they see the light and are transformed. Gosh I miss good writing that brought to the screen real people grappling with real issues minus agendas.
Jack Ryan (2018)
Saw 1st episode- not really interested in any more
I was expecting it to fall short of Harrison Ford and that American strength would be watered-down but this is SO disappointing. Americans are mean bullies indiscriminately using their power & Muslims are good guys just trying to raise loving families forced into retaliation. What can I say: absurd, tired, unoriginal, tepid and lousy story line. The guy playing Jack Ryan should be suspended if not fired for insubordination and because he's a poor actor. Pass on this if you liked Harrison Ford & Alec Baldwin and realistic, quality writing & acting because you won't like this!
In Our Hands: The Battle for Jerusalem (2017)
This is a very good, accurate record of 1967 events
I have already read much on Israel's creation, declaring independence and the Six Days War to be able to recognize accuracy. This is very accurate and very clarifying regarding the Jews struggle to re-take Jerusalem despite enemies and biased world opinion. I appreciated the testimonials of actual combatants coordinated with the recreated scenarios. It was very moving and provoked a real emotional response from me. This is a great tutorial for people wanting to have a better understanding of why little, tiny Israel is so significant in the arc of history...past, present and future. Gordon Robertson's "wrap up" at the conclusion is excellent. I highly recommend this.
Generation Zero (2010)
Excellent - not just confined to 2008 Economic Crisis
Got much more from this documentary than we expected! It did a very good job of critiquing the Economic Crisis of 2008 and assigning responsibility. And the film also did an excellent job of addressing the historical cultural developments and their contributions. We had not seen that "full picture" before. This film provides insight into the current national conditions that still exist. Highly recommend. It's better than some of the other so- called factual documentaries out there on what led to 2008 meltdown.
River (2015)
Don't Understand all the 9's and 10's
The plot was an interesting premise and the acting was very good but each episode was more depressing than the prior one. I kept watching expecting it to get better based on the really high reviews but it just didn't. John River was the most morose lunatic yet remained employed!?!? The action and story line developed very slowly and I found that extremely tedious. But the long lingering close ups of the depressed lead character really made it difficult to watch. Having sat through all six episodes I can only say I regret the waste of time. Netflix viewers gave it one star -- I will give more credence to their reviews in the future.
