The Whale (2022)
I wish it had a different theme
20 March 2023
I have nothing against this actor and I am happy for him and I am sure his performance in this movie must be touching as well but personally I will avoid this movie. Not the actor's fault probably, but there's just too many movies coming put these days revolving around kids/family drama. It sounds like another movie making statement about parenthood, relations with kids and so on. Avatar 2, Antman 3, new Thor, and even many recent horror movies to name a few - all these seem to be mono-thematic, as if there were no other stories to tell or no other dramas to build around. With that being said, we are too tired to watch another movie focusing on similar issues, it puts us off, despite the fact that this may also feature some other emotional struggles, the description screams like a lazy plotline everyone seems to follow these days- kids.

Surprising and beautiful
27 August 2022
I don't get the critics nor do I ever care for their opinions to be honest. I hadn't heard about this book prior to watching the movie, nor had I heard anything about this story and I absolutely enjoyed the movie! I would recommend to anyone! Thr acting was good, the story was engaging and the marshes looked stunning. It doesn't happen often these days that a movie manages to surprise me and this one really did!

I can only imagine that the book might be bettet, as it usually is with such adaptations, but the movie itself holds its ground and I believe can be enjoyed by both the fans and complete strangers to the series such as myself.

Fantastic example of a Scandinavian mystery series
20 September 2020
This series has it all : that northern melancholy, interesting characters, great story, plot twists and a lot of suspense. Highly recommended if you enjoy a good mystery, especially if you are a fan of Scandinavian atmosphere and style.

The Woods (2020)

Amazing suspense series with a unique atmosphere
17 June 2020
Absolutely amazing! Great acting, plot and suspense, I watched it in one go. Definitely better without the dub, the language builds a lot of its specific atmosphere, similar to many Scandinavian mystery series. It is set in a gloomy Polish scenery, with characteristic suburbs, woods, and social issues. Those who got offended over a subplot with a raped girl thought to be provocative due to a tattoo - this kind of absurdal situation really took place and it wasn't in Poland. The series makes a great commentary on the absurdity and unfairness of the case. The main character is well fleshed out, and his stunning acting kept me mesmerized. Those eyes! The introduction of the teenhood and combining the events from the 1994 with the present times really bring that specific feeling of a coming-of-age movie set in post-comunistic Poland. First love and first heartbreaks get overshadowed by a tragedy. It is a great example of what Polish cinematographers are capable of, and a proof that talented artists exist worldwide, not only in the USA. Europeans are amazing, each country has something intriguing to offer! Americans might get bored since they are used to English as first language and repetitive action movies with cgi and stuntmen - this is a title for a bit more demanding public that can appreciate a good build up, unique settings of the darker side of Polish reality, great atmosphere and music, as well as a different cultural approach to creating a mystery series. I honestly don't get those who gave it low score, perhaps a good mystery ain't for you because this sure is one!

Dear Mr. Gacy (2010)

Not accurate with the source
23 October 2019
This movie has very little to do with Jason Moss' book. I had read "The Last Victim" before approaching this movie and I don't understand why they decided to make an adaptaion that is so different from the source. Why to make movies like this then if we cannot stay true to the facts? Why to change even most crucial moments? Gacy's portrayal is probably the strongest point of the movie, Jason comes across as very different from the book equivalent, and the book was written by himself. It's a nice movie to put as background for other activities but the books is definitely much better.

Legions (2019)

A great historical movie with incomplete romance plot
8 October 2019
The movie tells the story of Polish Legions that fight for the reestablishment of their motherland after 123 years of the Partition of Poland. While the historical aspects are presented quite well, underlying the patriotism and bravery of the Legionairies, the romantic plot that emerges between a deserter Jozek, a Legionairy Tadek and a young fighting woman Ola seems to lack some resolution. Female lead acting isn't the strongest, the emotional aspects seem to be missing, and the character of Ola ultimately appears to be bland and shallow, especially in the way she treats Józek in the end. Jozek is a much more complex character: withdrawn, brave, distant and a bit of a loner, he makes an intriguing individual. The actor definitely delivers. He deserves a better confrontation with Tadek and Ola as the way the love story ends seems like an unfinished business, something that was nice when it was needed but was ultimately shrugged off by the girl in a surprisingly emotionless way. All in all, it's a great movie about Polish people and their incredible patriotic spirit. I just wish the romance was at least half as powerful as the will of the Legionaries to recover their home.

Joker (I) (2019)

This is an answer to "Why so serious" question.
4 October 2019
Ever thought that laughter can be misunderstood? This depiction of Joker is a personal and intimate journey into the psyche of one of the greatest villains ever created but you are gonna see only as much as he is willing to show you - and he shows a lot. As someone who struggles with mental issues, I can say this movie is not only a hit in commercial sense but it also hits way close to home. You can laugh with Joker, you can fear Joker but in this one you may yet cry for Joker.
