Babylon (2022)
The Wolf of Wall Street on holiday clearance
Very entertaining! Diego Calva who plays Manny was phenomenal. Even though it should have ended at the 2 hour mark, I did not find myself bored during any part. The chaotic way in which every scene was constructed was so captivating, and surprisingly done right most of the time. The beginning was by far the strongest. Introductions to each character were hilarious with the help of the constant chaos in the background. I especially love that in the 1920's, it was more accepting for people to just die on the spot. Wonderful.
Although a lot of the time I felt this film was trying too hard to one up itself in most situations...trying to squeeze shock value in places that really didn't need it. I get it. You don't need explosive diarrhea to help convey your point.
And the directors ending finale montage was my least favorite scene by far. It was quite nauseating honestly. The camera turns around to look back at us, the audience, breaking a bit of the 4th wall that you damn well know the director has been so horny for. He's been waiting 3 pain staking hours and can't hold it in anymore so he ejaculates all over his great beautiful edit, hoping that the audience will cum with him in unison as he holds our hand through the unfolding of cinemas history right before our very eyes... Sadly, I could only feel the directors ego oozing from the screen. Spoiler: I do not cum. Instead I chuckle as I witness a scene from Avatar (yes, Avatar) play on the screen during a moment that I should be feeling awe and wonder. It was if the film was becoming self aware and I was about to witness a BTS blooper reel any second. Luckily, this horrendous moment only lasted 5 minutes of the film's 3 hour and 9 minute run time so I can easily forgive. I just had to mention it.
The ending wasn't even that bad! Besides the short history lesson, the film wraps up very well. Having Manny return to new Hollywood to see a (white) version of himself and his lost love being portrayed in the movie theater was very emotional. A great bitter sweet moment. We've come all this way and that payoff was perfect.
It's easy to poke fun at the flaws in this film, but it was honestly a very fun and entertaining piece! Anyone who hates this film is in denial of how much fun it was to watch. A lot of scenes were ripped from classics which I had no problem with. If any film was to steal and remix scenes into their own, Babylon would be the film to do it. It knew it was not the first of its kind. In a way, we were watching a celebration of film as a medium. I knew what was coming next, but was on the edge of my seat- I could care less if Tarantino had already done it. A truly dazzling spectacle.
The funnest film of 2022. A bit too long, but worth the ticket.
Chicken Little (2005)
Wait a minute, this movie kind of sucks?
Yeah, if you remember this being a great movie, it was because we were both 5 years old. Watching this 20 years later I realize how lazy this movie really is written.
Pig (2021)
The era of Nicolas Cage movies we want
Captivating story. Cool DP work. Nicholas Cage.
Need I say more?
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
Conventional Cliche Horror Plot
Felt like I was watching a Tom & Jerry episode. You knew the conclusion to every scene before the conflict even began.
This movie is definitely made for the big screen, but for any avid horror fan, you've already seen this movie.
The Lodge (2019)
Cool concept that could have had even more horror potential.
Loved the idea of the entire cult lurking around/inside the cabin, it was a shame that wasn't played with more. The scariest part of this movie was the shot of the snow angles outside the window...gave you chills knowing the true gravity of what they were up against.
Should have ended the movie while she walked over to the car. The dining scene was unnecessary.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Binge Worthy
So hard to stop watching this crazy stupid show. Got to give it to the writers, it was so addictively captivating.
Set design was so good you'll be seeing every halloween costume this year look the same.
Episode 6 was by the far the peak of this series, an unbelievable conclusion to the previous 5 episodes. After that however, I can't say much... seemed to drift from the theme of fairness and equity among players which I really liked.
Definitely recommend this series. Even though some of the mysteries that were trying to be sneaky were quite apparent early on, it didn't take away from the excitement and stakes of the game.
(And something that I knew bothered many people was the atrocious acting by the American characters. Not sure if the problem was poor casting choices or some kind of language barrier, but damn, I can safely say for everyone- that part was hard to watch)
The Clovehitch Killer (2018)
Almost.
Great starting premise with an all too familiar flatlined conclusion that snuffs any drops of lingering suspense left to offer.
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
Watch the first two thirds, then turn the movie off.
A really solid film with excellent realistic building tension...
...until the last crucial 20 minutes of the film turned into an all too familiar classic blockbuster ending that ruined the entire first two thirds of excellent buildup which consequently always ruins the totality of a suspense film.
I was wishing the film could mainly just stick to the bunker for its entirety and maybe reveal the scary outside spectacles with less carelessness. Very sad to see this, it would've been an absolute favorite.
With all that being said, it was still an awesome take as a remake and is worth the watch. Great directing, acting, and editing. John Goodman plays a perfect role. A very captivating slow burn of a story that reels you in.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Worth its Weirdness
Overall this movie surprisingly owned up to its craziness.
The characters (in particular, the boss) along with certain death defying scenes were a bit too cheesy for my own liking. I'm always hoping for a movie to be more realistic, but that obviously is not the style of directing Ben Stiller usually jives with. In its defense, the film is definitely not supposed to be taken too seriously.
It has a satisfying ending that ties everything together and really rewarded me for sticking around until the end. (Not gonna lie, I almost switched off the movie during the early scene with the shark)
This movie is rare in the fact that it becomes more enjoyable the longer you watch. Nothing too special about the cinematography and whatnot, but it was worth it for the story.
