The Bad Guys (2022)
Style Over Substance
I had very high hopes for this when the trailer came out. It looked like a nice spin on bad-guys-go-good, the animation was superb, and the humour was captivating.
There is a lot of good stuff in this movie, but the story isn't really it. Everything happens very fast and for no real reason. The characters are just there to be cool and nothing else except a thin veneer of heart which the movie really does nothing to earn. This is a huge shame because there's nothing really keeping you invested. Even the villain is insignificant, forced, and predictable.
Even if you try to enjoy the movie as a light romp, it's just too devoid of anything.
Kudos, however, to the various artists involved because there is no denying that the visual aspect is fairly impressive. The voice acting is solid, too.
Day Shift (2022)
Better Than Expected
I had an hour to kill and figured I'd give this a go based on the premise that it's a black comedy and I was in the mood for it. I started watching it fully ready to be disappointed but was quite engaged.
Jamie Fox is always charismatic but at times pushes a bit too much. Dave Franco was the real revelation though. His character could have been grating and annoying but it was handled well. He was actually funny a few times where he had no right to be. Snoop Dogg is also worth watching. Okay enough villain.
I'm not one to choose action over storytelling but this one did have some good set pieces. The fighting was mostly nicely choreographed but it was a car chase which really had me - extremely dynamic camera work in that one.
A number of plot holes here and there but I found myself willing to close an eye because it's a fun movie.
