Get Hard (2015)
a lot funnier than i thought, i don't think it will go down in my classic comedies
Get hard is about a rich, white, businessman played by will ferrell who gets framed for a crime he did not commit. Kevin hart plays a middle class African American man who runs a car wash in the basement off will farrells company. As will ferrell character repairs for his time in prison, he hires kevin hart character to show him the ropes in prison. This definitely make for some awesome scenes, getting to know the yard, jail riots, and how to get hard. there are plenty of offensive jokes, racist jokes, but these other things that we love about will ferrell movies and that's what makes it funny.
I'm going to give get hard a 6.5 out of ten. I would not say you have to see this at the theater and pay 13 dollars for a movie tickets. Not to say that if you did see this at the theater, you would not enjoy yourself. I would however recommended this movie night at home wait for this to come out on red box and check it out then. Thank you for reading
The Gunman (2015)
middle of the road, i got respect for Penn
A great artist to me, is an artist whom is always willing to take a risk, someone who is willing to look outside the box, to become better at your art. Sometimes this perception of art can lead to the most amazing pieces, but this can be an artists greatest downfall at the same time. this works for actors all the time, for Sean Penn, the gunman didn't work out for him. I will say the dude got shredded for this movie, but ultimately, for me he didn't portray an action star, or a hero for me at all. The film was really boring for me, He was boring for me. this film had a couple cool action sequences but overall it was just boring.
In the film Sean Penn plays a guy working in the African mining trade, he did some bad things now he is on the run. after a couple years of hiding these people find him. He tracks down his old partners and girlfriend and together they are on the run trying to track down the people trying to hurt him. there are other plot points to the movie, but essentially that's it in a nutshell.
This film was very generic. For an actor like Sean penn , I think this is a role we have not seen him play, I totally admire him trying to be a better artist, I am not going to knock him for that, but to me it just didn't work. It worked for keaunu Reeves in John Wick, liam neeson has become the go to action star, It didn't work for Sean Penn. I am not even going to say Sean Penn was a quarter of the problem with this film by any means, this film was very boring and generic, Sean Penn was the least of there problems. I give the gunman a 5 out of 10. there is nothing special about this film, its very middle of the road. I would recommend this if its a late night and you gt nothing to watch. I wouldn't pay the money to see this at the theater.
Run All Night (2015)
This is good movie
The new film Run all night starring Liam Neeson and Joel Kinneman. the story revolves around a mob hit-man named Jimmy Conlan ( Liam Neeson ) and his son Micheal ( Joel Kinneman ). Michael lives a peaceful life with his family with apparently no connection to his hit-man father. Working as a Limo driver, he is caught in the wrong place at the wrong time witnessing a brutal murder involving the mob his father is affiliated with. With a hit out on his son, Jimmy must choose between his long time partner and his son who resents him.
The story is well told, and I was pleasantly surprised with how suspenseful this story is. I usually think these liam neeson roles are completely cheesy, but I like the chemistry between him and Joel Kinneman, InfactI would say Joel outshined him and only enhanced the Neesons character development. you could really feel the hatred he had for his father and how much he hated having to rely on the one person who was not there for him.
Another highlight of this film was the relationship between Liam Neeson and Ed Harris's character Sean Mcguire. in the film these characters have grown up together, Ed Harris does a great job establishing the fact that he knows that his friend is troubled and hurting from the things he has made him do.
I would be lying if I were to say this was a fantastic movie, I would also be lying if I were to say it was complete crap. There were definitely times where I found myself scratching my head at some of the over the actions of some of these characters. on the flip side these are criminals and drug addicts. This is also a story that has been told a million times, so I credit the director for doing a good job a telling it, and the performances of the actors really intensified the story also.
Overall I'm going give run all night a 6.5 out of 10. To me this isn't going to be a memorable film, as in it would the first choice of film i would tell someone to see, but I will remember thinking it wasn't a bad film. I really enjoyed Joel Kinneman in the killing, and I'm glad to start seeing him in movies because he is really good. Liam Neeson once. again didn't do it for me but he didn't annoy me as much because I liked the development between father and son. so there ya have it, thanks for reading!
Unfinished Business (2015)
If you like Vince Vaughns humor i think you will end up liking unfinished business
It has been a while since we have gotten a Vince Vaughn film, this weekend we got unfinished business. Unfinished business is the story of Dan Trunkman, a small business owner, who with the help of his dysfunctional associates, try to close a deal with a big wig European company. Along the way they get themselves in some pretty funny situations, such as a trying to get through a riot and letting of some steam at a rave. This movie also revolves around these characters personal lives and how this big deal is going to change each one of their lives.
This movie definitely has that Vince Vaughn improvised banter feel to it, essentially Vince Vaughn once again plays that same character that he does in every film he does. So if you like his humor and jokes, and you like his movies, I think you will at least find this movie OK, as I did. Dave Franco also played the same character he usually plays, a complete idiot, which is funny, but I think its going to wear thin with me real fast. I enjoyed Tom Wilkinson's character, an old man who just wants to shred it down for his golden years. In my opinion, the strongest part of this film is the chemistry between the actors. These situations and the way they handled them definitely resulted in some great comedy.
The weakest link in this film to me was the writing and the character development. As you watch these guys go through this business trip, You also watch them deal with their personal issues. The issues in which the result of this deal is going to solve. Vince's character is dealing with a son who is dealing with bullying and his wife wants to send him to an expensive private school, Toms character is dealing with divorcing his wife so he can live the things he feels like he missed being in an unhappy marriage, and Dave's character is dealing with becoming someone and growing up. you have all these concepts that I really think are there to create substance to the story and characters, but I ended feeling like these characters really didn't care about these issues. I don't know if it was the way it was written, or the performance's, but I just felt like if there was a little more focus on showing that they really need these changes in their lives, it could have added this whole other layer to the story, making this a really good movie instead of an OK movie.
In the end I thought this was an OK movie, it was funny, it had some great lines and scenes. I just feel if they are going to write in these personal quandaries, I should have felt more when they were resolved. If your looking for a funny movie and you like his comedy I think you will end up enjoying as I did. I'm gonna give Unfinished business a 7 out of 10. I wouldn't run out to see this, but if you do end up seeing it in the theater I don't think you will leave thinking you wasted your money. thanks for reading!
Chappie (2015)
although I liked chappie i was ultimately disappointed
Neill Blomkamps new film chappie had the potential to be such a great film, unfortunately to me Chappie had all these great ideas and concepts and tried to fit them all into a two hour film and it felt like I got jipped out of this great character development. Just as amazing as the set pieces and the design of this world is, it lacks the same amount or even more in emotion, character development and connectivity, and all around story. the first twenty minutes or so you really connect with chappie, essentially he is a toddler and there is a scene where you really feel for him. they really capture this feeling of a lost kid and it was sad to watch this innocent being subjected to what life and survival is. This to me was the peak of emotional Connectivity with Any of the characters, I think the relationship between his maker, his. "mom" and his "dad" lacked a layer that made me end up not really caring about any of them. I think the tone of this film came off cartoony and its attempts at humour just didn't work. for example, while chappie's mom is reading a story to him about a black sheep the crowd in the theater was laughing like it was funny, while it is charming I honestly think this scene is meant to show a relationship between a mother and son, a mother explaining to her son why he's different than everyone else at that. All these relationships in the end are forgotten and I was just left thinking I should feel more for this character by the end of the film. This film really lacks a villain also, Hugh Jackman's character really does not serve a purpose I didn't care about this character in the end, all though they tried to display a man trying to better mankind, one of my favorite attributes of a villain, this character really was nothing more than a mustache twirling villain in the end. one positive about this film and a concept I really think Blomkamp really wanted to get across was the idea of consciousness and what makes us human. fear, love, relationships, these are the things that make up a soul, these are the things that make us who we are. I think if he had focused more on these concepts this could have been an awesome film, he hit the nail on the head the first 20-30 minutes then it just fell apart for me after that. I'm gonna give chappie a 5.5 out of 10. This was not a terrible movie but I was hoping for more. if your a fan of Elysium or district 9 I would recommend Chappie. If you are a fan of science fiction I would recommend this also. Thanks for reading!
Focus (2015)
This makes me worried about Suicide squad
The thing that I think I love about film, is to be able to transport myself into a different world or life for an hour or two, clear my head and have some fun. They say anything can happen in the movies, but unfortunately this amazing quality sometimes can take us out of the movie as fast as it can leave us with some timeless moments, for Will Smith's new film, focus this is just the case. Despite how charismatic Will Smith is, his performance in this was just a rehash of his same punk attitude and quick whitted one liners that I did not find funny. The writing in this movie was bad. I feel like they tried to throw in these ridiculous stats to make it believable but it just made it stupid. The chemistry between Margot Robbie and Will Smith was stale and bland, Which makes me a worried about Suicide Squad even more. This film really did not impress me, but I will say this, the general story line minus the BS stats, the poor performances, and the chemistry between Robbie and Smith kept me wanting to stay and find out if it was as predictable as I thought it was, which it is with one twist at the end that I didn't see coming. If you are a fan of either actor I could see how you could dig this movie, or if you looking to watch some mindless fun with absolutely no substance, I could also see how someone could like this. Me personally, I compare some of these theatrics to Steven Seagal using a two liter bottle as a silencer, just over the top stupidity that I didn't find fun at all. I give focus a 4 out of 10. Im nervous about SUICIDE SQUAD!!!!!!!!
Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (2015)
This movie was so much better than I thought
I love being right, I really do, but when i'm wrong and I get a pleasant surprise it makes it that much sweeter. That was the case with Hot tub time machine 2. I never saw the first one, so maybe this made the experience a bit more surprising, but this movie was hilarious, I mean wicked funny. The chemistry between these three actors was special. The script was so funny, and it was so well written. I mean I think some of these one liners are going to go down in history. Essentially being a comedy film, there was a good mystery element going on at the same time. Which gave the raunchy comedy a plot with depth and substance. I was very impressed. So this film starts off with rob Cordey's character getting shot in his manhood, and the team uses the hot tub to try and go back in time to save rob Cordey's character, but they end up ten years in the future. From there they encounter a legit smart car that gets upset at robs character and tries to kill him, drug induced party's, and plenty of corky, raunchy humor and debauchery. I think my favorite part of this film was the banter between the characters, they are all so different but, I cant say it enough, they play of each other so well. Another thing they did right was the films run time. I think It clocked out at an hour and a half. It didn't drag or feel slow at anytime. The films tone stayed consistent and the film was paced perfectly. I feel like as ridiculous this plot was it really worked well, they really did surprise me. Another thing they did well was not use all there material in the trailer. Now that I have seen the film, I think they maybe should have shown a little more, showing how funny this movie really is. From the crazy drug trips to the little heartfelt moment between lou and jacob this film is so worth going to see if your looking for a good laugh. This is not a waste of money you will 100% get what you are looking for in this film. I can happily say I was totally wrong about this movie. I am going to give Hot tub time machine an 8.5 out of 10. Definitely check it out, watch out for the electric ladybug Thanks for reading.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
A must see action/Spy film
Growing up one of my favorite franchises to watch was James Bond. A world based in reality, but with all these over the top gadgets, weapons, cars and villains. The kingsman did an amazing job at recreating the tone of these classic movies while putting this gratuitously violent, original spin on the spy thriller. The Kingsman is a story adapted from a Mark Miller comic book. This comic book tone was that insanely crazy quality that I think set this film apart from other spy franchises. Another aspect of this film I enjoyed, was the wink to the fact that Director Matthew Vaughn New how over the top this film was. The fact that he did this made the moments in this film that felt campy and a little cheesy feel fun while paying homage to the stereotypical spy film. The things I really liked the most in this film were the performances, the villains and the action. it's funny because these aspects if not done right could have made this unbelievably stupid. They stayed with a consistent tone and they really pulled it off. This main character eggsie is played by up and comer Teron Edgerton. This dude is awesome, he did such a good job. Colin Firth did a great job also, playing a mentor figure, and his action sequence is absolutely amazing. It is one of the highlights of the film. You will know what I am talking about when you watch it. Samuel L Jackson is the man, who else can play a sociopathic genius with a lisp and still make it his own.. At first I really did not care for his character but as the film progresses you end up think this villain is absolutely hilarious. I don't think anyone could pull that off as good as him. Besides Taron Edgertons character Samuel L Jackson was my favorite character in this film. I wrote in my marvel piece last week about what makes a good villain. The idea of a villain that thinks they are bettering the world by their actions, creates a whole other layer of evil. As over the top, and as crazy as his character was, this was the of the layer that made him a great villain. The only complaint I have about the kingsman is really minor. There were definitely a couple of occasions were I felt the film was a little corny. I will say this, those moments seem to pass quickly, and I mostly felt this in the beginning 20 minutes, before you really figure out the tone of the film. These moments are there to remind you that this is the tone of the movie. Overall. I really enjoyed this film. It was a total throw back to those over the top, 60's and 70's outrageous spy films that we all know and love. Cool gadgets, good action, it's very, very violent. Teron Edgerton was just awesome he played a good action star while being able to portray a relatable character with depth and substance. I highly recommend The Kingsman: The Secret Service. I give it a solid 8 out of 10. I can't say it enough if you like over the top violence and you like spy movie you will definitely dig this
Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
horrible chemistry for a movie about about relationships
As I am not the target audience for fifty shades of Grey nor did I read any of the books, I am married to someone who did care to read the books and has now seen the film. As I stated before I did not read the books so I have the added benefit of judging this as just a film rather than judging it as an adaptation.
This movie is not atrocious but its not good by any means. This film is all about a relationship, regardless of what they do in there relationship, This is the key factor in this film, the most important part about it. It was this key element that fifty shades of Grey lacks. The relationship between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey was not believable at all. The chemistry between the two actors was stiff and unbelievable. Although Dakota's performances was the redeemable quality of this film. It was Jaime's performance that gave the relationship it's stiff and scripted feel. Even though I didn't read the books and I don't know what Christian Grey's character is suppose to be, I still felt his character should have had more presence on the screen, Anastasia up staged him totally when he is suppose to be the dominant one.
One of the biggest complaints I heard about the book was how poorly the book was written. This is clearly the case because the script was awful. The dialog, the story, and most importantly the relationship between Christian and Anastasia. I think this film had the potential to portray this relationship and all it entails with out making an all out smut film, but by having an actor who dominates the screen, as the relationship. Someone with more charisma. Instead it was Anastasia who stole the scenes.
I think my biggest problem with this film is the fact it would have been interesting to see this story play out the way it was suppose to. To take this taboo subject and have it reflected in this film. I am going to give fifty shades of Grey a 4 out of 10. I recommend this if you have read the books and want to see this play out on the big screen, unfortunately if you liked the book I think your gonna be disappointed. Thanks for reading
