My Fair Lady (1964)
1 minute that brings the movie down
Overall, it is a delighful movie and really solid both acting-wise and technically. It had something to say, said it quite well for most of the movie (but we'll come back to that soon). The songs were quite catchy and did not fell in a lot of trap I was expecting them to. Obviously, some scenes did not age well (particularly the bath scene at the beggining which made me cringe quite a bit). However, I've grown to expect more of those in movies from that time. While it does not excuse it, it is worth considering that it is not 'of its time' but maybe slightly ahead of it, which is always appreciated. Some characters might have deserved some more development. Freddy is the most obvious example but Pickering never really project immense respect and the only reason I should believe that is because the movie tell me so, which is not a sign of great writing. However, this is only a small element which is easily forgive by the overall quality of the last hour or so.
The movie was about to end like it should have. I remember telling myself "Well, I was sure they were gonna fall in the trope of the girl ending up with the protagonist who does not deserve her, but I'm glad I'm wrong." Then came a great last scene were Higgins listen to his recordings contemplating how his hubris made all those who are dare to him flee him, which was foreshadowed quite early with his mother. The image of him, looking into oblivion, while the real Eliza speaks of his worth in the background and how he decided unconciously that she was not worth him (her money was not worth nor was she, she was solely worth the challenge). Magnificent, 10/10, 9 if I feel severe.
But then came that last minute that ruined a perfect ending. Having Eliza not only come back, but come back to Higgins acting as a he always had was just too much. I guess this is the moment where the movie was 'of its time', and that time does not make for good romantic drama.
Overall, I cannot give the movie a bad grade. If, on a three hours movie, only one and an half scene are bad, you forgive it. Furthermore, next time I watch it, I know when to end it.
The Hurricane Heist (2018)
Stupid and inept. Enjoyed every second of it.
Ok this movie is probably one of the stupidest I've seen this year. Don't go there expecting, well, anything. However, I would absolutely recommend this movie.
From the very first scene you know what your getting into and you sit back and enjoy the ride. The cliché dialogue, the sherif chewing the scenery like there is no tomorrow, the over the top southern accents, every character taking bad decisions all the time and, of course, a stupid setup that delivers on its promises.
If I'd seen this in theater I'd probably be pissed (probably at myself, this type of movie was to be expected with that title) but it's worth a watch on Netflix.
Draft Day (2014)
Might just be my greatest guilty pleasure
Ok, ok, ok, stop it. I know than this movie is far from a masterpiece. Originally I even gave it a 6 based on overall quality. However, it is a movie than I could watch over and over again and I do not even watch football.
I changed it because compared to other non-masterpiece than I can watch forever, I do not laugh at the movie but is actually immersed in. The acting can be goofy at time but give it a look, the pacing is great and if you don't like it, trust me I can totally understand, I just cannot not love it.
What Happened to Monday (2017)
Sometimes Great, Sometimes Flawed
So, I really don't know how to approach that one. Well, I'll start by saying you should give it a look and that Noomi Rapace is excellent.
This movie had both some great elements and some less interesting. The backstory is great and so is the moral dilemma that it brings with it. However, the movie quickly take a standard action flic turn and it made it that the middle to end part was boring in some parts. Some scene are really inventive and I am happy to have been able to see them. However, the supporting cast, while good, is criminally underused and some chase scenes could have been cut to develop them a bit which would have helped us to go through the movie. The Seven Sisters all have a single attribute to represent them, but I can easily forgive that to the film because developping 7 leads must be increadibly hard.
Overall, I don't regret seeing it, I had a good time for the first and third act, but the second bored me. Give it a watch, and make your own mind, maybe your thoughts will help me make out mine.
Death Note (2017)
Oh my god, that was horrible
OK this one is gonna be short and sweet. That movie was simply horrible. The story is rushed, the main character, who is supposed to be a genius, never stops to be an attention-hungry idiot and all the important parts to understand the story are either omitted or within a montage.
Th acting was simply horrible. Nat Wolff goes through the whole movies either like he needs to go to the toilet or simply overacting. Margaret Qualley's character is bad but I feel it is more due to horrible writing than bad acting. The silver lining is however Lakeith Stanfield's L: Good job, you were decent, and judging by the performances around you, you must be an incredible actor to pull that off.
Conclusion, do not watch it, it is jut a waste of time.
Tuktuq (2016)
Underwhelming
I went to see this movie because I like the idea behind it. Also because there is only a few movies that are about Native Americans. However, I feel like this movie should have stayed in planning a bit longer.
First of all, I feel like this movie was supposed to be a documentary at first, and it's only at the very end that they changed it. I say that because there is no interaction, except for one scene where nobody talk, between the main character and the Inuits. In fact, the only other characters are only there by phone.
Second, because there is no interaction, the movie does not show us what is going on, it tells us. Not only that, but it is the only moment anyone talks. The deputy minister is about one of the less realist character I've ever seen.
I would have loved to love this movie. I just couldn't. But I am still gonna see his next movie, because it seems to have been planned more. Maybe next time.
Dinotasia (2012)
Repeat after me movie: ''I am not a documentary''
This is the main problem I have with this movie: It is not what it says it is. This is not a documentary, this is an anthology film based on black comedy and taking place millions of years ago. To be honest with you,it is a good comedy, but I cannot appreciate it because of how far it is of what it pretends to be.
Overall, it is a great time with a lot of fun moments. Yes, CGI is quite bad, but you get used to it pretty fast and the characters have much more development that in a lot of movies even though they cannot talk and the narration is almost nonexistent. Unfortunately, the movie, as a whole, is brought down by its lack of honesty with the audience.
Horns (2013)
Good until the last 15 minutes
I found the film really good to be honest, I was really enjoying it. But then, we hit the last 15 minutes mark. That ending leaved me speechless because it was so incompatible with the rest of the movie. I felt like they shot the end then realize the movie was 10 minutes sort so they made an epic ending to please the average public, but, really, that movie should have ended on an anticlimax. That made me really sad, because some parts of the movie were awesome and the idea was original and if the movies ended 10 or 15 minutes earlier, I would have give it 9/10, but that ending was so horrible.
P.S.: The real killer was also really easy to find
