Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
MCU's Best Movie since Infinity War
HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!
I'm at a loss for words. Spider-Man: No Way Home is perfect. It might be the nostalgia blinding me but the movie is just so well done...
Tom's the highlight of the movie. Amazing actor, amazing character. The soundtrack was really great with some of Elfman's and Zimmer's scores pushed there. The CGI was amazing, it never felt fake. The cinematography was good (the shot of the 3 Spider-Men at the Statue If Liberty and the shot of Peter in the rain listening to JJ are amazing and will definitely be future wallpapers). MJ and Ned were great. Glad this movie didn't have an unnecessary subplot and just told the story it had to tell. Doctor Strange was also great (still can't believe he lost a fight against Spider-Man though). Willem Dafoe also gave an amazing performance as the Green Goblin once again. Shame his original suit got destroyed in the beginning though... Alfred Molina's Doc Ock also was perfect. It was great seeing Charlie Cox's Daredevil for like 2 minutes. And now for Tobey and Andrew's triumphant return... My hands still hurt from clapping. I wasn't the only one though the cinema exploded. It was amazing seeing the 2 Spider-Men from our past. They both gave a great performance. Andrew's Spider-Man saving MJ is just the cherry on top that gave this movie some extra points. Aunt May's death hit harder than I thought it would... Great scene and great performance from the two actors involved in this scene.
Honestly don't know what more I can say about the movie. It's perfect. My only tiny little nitpicks are that some jokes do fall flat and the Venom Post Credit scene was alright. Also I totally see how Peter could have just called the Avengers or even Wong to help him battle the villains. But overall, great movie and a great cinema experience. Definitely going on my top 4 movies here on Letterbox.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Justice League: Pros, Cons and Mixed Thoughts
Even though this movie isn't perfect and has lots of problems, I'm glad fans can finally get some closure and for Snyder to publish his version of the movie. Now with that said:
Pros: Batman and Superman are the best of the main characters. I love their arc and the actors give a fantastic performance. The CGI is good. The cinematography is gorgeous. The action scenes are also really good. Alfred, Lois and Martha are also really good. Ray Fisher's Cyborg is alright as well. The third act is awesome and I love Darkseid's inclusion. The slow scenes where the characters are just talking and bonding are great. Also it ends in a way that makes you want more.
Cons: Ezra Miller's Flash is terrible. His dialogue, acting and specially the running. The 4:3 ratio is distracting. The songs used throughout the movie are also really bad (I loved "Everybody Knows" in the original cut I think it fit than any other soundtrack used here). Martian Manhunter's inclusion adds nothing to the story. Actually lots of scenes served no purpose to the overall story. The slow motion is way overused. The pacing is too slow specially in the first and second act. None of the emotional bits hit me. The comedy also didn't work. Most of what I talked about here comes down to the writing which leaves something to be desired. The R Rating is completely unnecessary. Lots of curse words could have been cut and the blood could have been trimmed down. Also Zack has this thing with having his main heroes kill people in his movies: Batman in BvS, Superman in MOS and Wonder Woman here. You could justify Superman killing Zod and maybe Batman, but Wonder Woman would have found a way not to kill those bank robbers.
Mixed Bag: Wonder Woman has some great scenes and some scenes where the acting could be better ("Kal-El No" comes to mind). Aquaman completely lacks the charm from his solo movie, but gives a solid performance. Junkie XL's soundtrack is sometimes epic, sometimes unnecessary. The black suit is okay. It's not bad, but I would rather have seen Clark use the blue and red. Jared Leto's Joker starts out intriguing when he shows up but the scene takes way too longer.
Overall: Not bad, but not great either. The runtime is completely unnecessary and lots of scene serve no overall purpose to the plot, but it's enjoyable. Better than the theatrical version, Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad but nowhere near as good as Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam and Batman v Superman: Extended Cut.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The New Deal (2020)
Back to the Beginning
Finally the wait is over! Agents of SHIELD is back.
To be honest S06 wasn't as good as the previous seasons so my hype for the last season was not much. It wasn't a bad season, it was good, but nothing great or special. Definately the worst season in AoS. 7.5/10, which isn't bad. And I think the main reason for it was Coulson's absence. For a while I tried to figure out why I didn't enjoy S06 as much as I enjoyed the previous seasons and then the answer became clear to me. Coulson wasn't in it. Sure Clark Gregg remained on the show as Sarge and did a fine job at it as one of the Season's antagonist, but it wasn't enough to fill the hole at SHIELD's core. So when the episode began with LMD Coulson booted up and looked around and everyone and started speaking to the team like Coulson, I couldn't help but smile. Coulson was back... SHIELD was back...
The episode was great. Koening is back. The references to previous seasons was great. Sad Fitz isn't there, but the episode worked fine without him. Jemma showed some dark side here and I can't wait to find out what happened to her and Fitz after the Chronicoms attacked the Lighthouse. To me the highlight of the episode was indeed Coulson. It has been 2 years since we last saw him (sure he popped up in some flashbacks in S06, but it wasn't the same as the old dad joke Coulson we all know and love). Can't wait for the next episode. Really hyped to see what's in store for the final 12 episodes.
Supergirl: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part One (2019)
The Crisis is Here
Best Parts:
+ The cameos in the opening monologue
+ The character interactions
+ Oliver's "death" (he can't be dead just yet)
+ The stakes (first episode of the Arrowverse since Arrow's "Lian Yu" to give me chills). Hope Earth-38 is really gone for good
+ The CGI
+ The acting (when Grant Gustin cries I want to cry. He's so good. Stephen and Melissa were awesome as well).
Personal Changes
- Don't use soundtrack too much to give the viewer a more sense of dread and tension to what's to come
- Have the Monitor bring more heroes to help fight (I know they probably didn't have the budget but the Monitor could have saved more people just by bringing more heroes)
- Don't have Lena constantly saying she's not Alex's friend. I really like her character but she's always getting bad dialogue
- Slow down the episode a bit. There's no rush.
- Cut the pointless 2046 scene and give Sara and Oliver a scene together where it's just them and they talk about the beginning and etc.
- I really feel like this episode deserved those sort of recaps where we're shown everything that has happened in the Arrowverse to set up the Crisis. That would have been awesome
- More scenes with Barry and Oliver (if this is Oliver's last stand, they should have said goodbye to each other).
Can't wait for Hour 2. The winter break is going to destroy me.
Once Upon a Time: Beauty (2017)
Tale as Old as Time
The saddest and the most beautiful episode of Once I have seen in a long time. Let's do the Ups and Downs.
Ups: + Belle + Gideon + The "Up!" montage of Rumple and Belle + The tribute to Rumbelle + Belle's sad goodbye (probably the saddest one in all of OUAT history) + Weaver remembers! + More of Drizella + More of Tilly + Roger's daughter revealed (?) + Answering some unanswered questions (why is Weaver there, where's Belle, etc.)
Downs: - Teasing a Drizella and Henry romance - Belle (kinda) doesn't get a happy ending - Promos and ads made it seem like it was in fact a Halloween episode (when this should have been a Valentine episode if they wanted it to be a holiday special episode) - The title crawl being a cemetery and Halloween things instead of something related to Rumple and Belle (maybe the house they build should be the featured in the opening) - Halloween subplot could have been used in another episode with a flashback more Halloween centric (ex: Episode 2x05 - the Doctor, where both flashbacks and present day events made it seem like a Halloween episode)
Overall: 9.6/10. This episode hits you right in the feels. The flashbacks were really sad and I can't wait to see what's next for Rumple in Hyperion Heights. I hope he gets reunited with Belle.
Once Upon a Time: A Pirate's Life (2017)
Goodbye Emma...
So, in case you didn't know, this was Jennifer Morrison's last episode and lots of people online feared that they were going to kill her off or take away her happy ending by separating her from Hook. Don't worry, neither of those things happened. Emma got her happy ending with Hook and a newborn on the way. So instead of me just talking about the episode, I'm going to do an Ups and Downs review of the episode :)
Ups: + Jennifer Morrison + Emma Swan's sad and heartfelt goodbye + Explaining why Regina is there + The new Hook and his backstory + Henry, Roni and Rogers teaming up + More of Tiana + Regina staying for Henry + More of Weaver/Rumple + Emma Swan and Hook's happy ending
Downs: - No interactions between Emma and Regina - So Hook, Emma and Regina all look the same and haven't aged, while Henry did? - Jennifer Morrison's last episode
Overall: 8.5/10 I can't wait to find out who Hook's daughter is. And can Weaver be trusted? Can't wait.
Once Upon a Time: Hyperion Heights (2017)
Once Upon a Time... Again.
I've watched and been a fan of Once since S1 and when I learned that Emma, the Charmings, Belle, Zelena and the rest were not going to be in this season, I admit I felt a tad disappointed. But the fact that Hook, Regina and Rumple (my favorite OUAT characters) were coming back made me happy. I went into this New Season wondering if it was going to be good or not, and I wasn't disappointed! I'm going to sum it all up in this Up and Down review:
Ups from the Episode: + Roni, Rogers and Weaver + The new Henry + Their new take on Cinderella + Lucy + Leaving us with many questions + Lady Tremaine is an interesting villain + The callbacks to S1 + Leaves you wanting more + The visual effects are a bit better + Roni's speech to Tremaine
Downs: - Not explaining why Hook, Regina and Rumple are there - Henry's phone still works? And his bike still has gas? - That scene where Cinderella decides to not kill the prince (Dania Ramirez's acting was not that good, but I'm sure it will get better) - Cinderella knowing how to ride a motorbike after just someone explaining that to her - Only a glimpse of Tiana - The same old storyline (a curse, memory loss and fake memories)
Overall: 8.1/10 I hope we get flashbacks to every new character this season and I hope more new characters are introduced like Moana, Peter Pan 2.0, Snow White 2.0, etc. I also hope that we have lots of adventure through the Season. I want side-villains to show up and I hope they get their memories back (or at least some people) before the season finale. I can't wait to see how Emma, Zelena and Belle are coming back (Zelena for more than one episode).
Please, if you're a fan of Once don't give up on the show. It's still the show it was back then. The decision to not include Emma was Jennifer Morrison's, not the writers so don't give up on the show just because she's not there.
