It Comes at Night (2017)
Very slow moving and boring.
You never fully understand what it is that caused this virus/sickness/event(s) or how long it took to to apparently "destroy" cities/communities. Too many plot holes that make you go, "wait a minute...hold on".
Examples:
-burning the "infected" bodies but trying to avoid being detected.
-why are people shooting at each other? I get that this story might be "post-apocalyptic" (is it? it never reveals anything about what is happening) but why are people just randomly shooting at one another? Wouldn't it be more believable if they were just avoiding each other to not get infected? Again, we are never told the extent of why things are the way they are.
-Everyone is afraid of being "infected" and wear masks except for the dog. So you are lead to believe that the dog wouldn't get infected but then they discover that the dog is infected. If the characters were so concern about infection, then they would never have a dog around as it presents a risk. The same goes for the goats and chickens.
-The last time we see the dog, it is covered in blood..why is it covered in blood? Also, it appears that the dog might have been "stabbed or beaten"...but this is never addressed.
-If the house if boarded up, how did the dog get back into the house?
-If the father/mother have the "only set of keys" to lock/unlock the main door to the house, how did the child open the door? Did the father want the child to be infected to get the man and woman staying with him to be infected? If so, then why the heck would he try to save them in the first place?
-It is never fully explain why they don't go out at night. "it's just better that way"...why???
And there are more but I think you get the point.
The director is trying to build tension and set the mood but the only mood being set isn't "fear" but "bored". Even the actors seemed bored with this movie. None of the characters are believable except for the son, the child and the dog (hense the two star rating). I get that the director wanted to go a certain way with the film but with a small cast and a simple story (which I am not exactly sure what the point of this story was trying to make), you would think that the director would see how many holes there were in this story but yet failed discovered or correct. To leave it up to the audience to assume is just poor delivery.
By the way...there is nothing that comes at night or during the day. It is just paranoia.
This is a very slow moving, plot holed BORING movie. It wasn't enjoyable at all and if I ever saw it on the big screen I would have demanded my money back.
Watch it if you want but you have been warned.
Das Boot (1985)
Fantastic!
A great story taken from the German prescriptive of WW2. Watch it with subtitles for the real raw emotions, (dubbed looses the translation and the claustrophobic atmosphere).
The acting is outstanding.
Serpico (1973)
Movie still holds well today
Great acting and direction makes this movie still watchable with regards to the time period of the story.
Star Wars (1977)
AWESOME
Great acting, plot, direction. Too bad part 1, 2, 3, 7, 8,and 9 couldn't be rated a 10 as well.
Toys of Terror (2020)
Awful..had potential...but was just awful.
The acting in this was terrible.
The only person that was believable was the person that played the "contractor" and they killed him off as soon as they introduced him. The "mother" was very bland, the "father" couldn't carry the story due to bad direction, the "nanny" over acted (introduce the slow turn at the beginning of the movie for what reason exactly?) as well as the older "daughter", (too bad the spider didn't do it's job...it might have saved the movie....(no it wouldn't have). The "son" was sub par...I mean he only stood there with a helmet on through out the movi and I still not sure why there was another "younger daughter" as she had nothing to do with the movie at all. There was no connection at all with the characters.
The fault isn't entirely with the "acting", (or lack there of). The overall plot was underwritten and totally relied on effects (or lack of) to tell the story but the story was just boring. I woud say that the director is the 2020 version of Ed Wood...but that would be insulting to Ed Wood (RIP).
This is what happens when you put TV actors and actresses on a film. Made for TV movie...if they even do those anymore.
War of the Dead (2011)
Worst movie ever seen.
Totally non historical and extremely poorly done. Anyone liking this movie should immediately go to the hospital and have a lobotomy performed on them. Nothing about this movie is watchable, believable, or enjoyable. The "director" never ever learned anything about film making and the script is so poorly done that it makes "Manos the Hands of Fate" look like a best picture. Anyone associated with this film is now instantly black listed as incompetent film makers. Not one bit of this can be called "artistic expression"....more like toilet paper. And that is insulting toilet paper. Avoid...with extreme prejudice.
