IMDb Originals: Rian Johnson: Crafting the Perfect Plot Twist (2019)
Rian Johnson is spot on in this interview
Rian provides an excellent analysis of how plot structure can make all the difference between a good movie and a great one.
I just wish that this interview was longer, so he could put forward some more examples. One that I would have added is Get Out (2017), where you know that something unusual is happening but cannot put your finger on it, the suspense builds up, then all gets revealed in the final few scenes.
Maximum Ride (2016)
A seriously truncated version of James Patterson's sci-fi novel
One of the few sci-fi novels that I've read recently is James Patterson's "When The Wind Blows" (published 1998). At least, that's the book's title in Australia, why the movie is called "Maximum Ride" I'm not sure but probably because it's shorter and sounds action-oriented.
Anyway, the novel has many twists and turns, but the movie omits a lot of these as well as doing away with two major major characters. This truncation makes the movie's plot somewhat disjointed and hard to follow. All the same I found it mildly enjoyable.
Burt Bacharach: A Life in Song (2015)
A delight for the ears!
As well as hanging upon every word and composer's insight from maestro Bacharach himself, each and every song is a delight to the ears.
I found the not-so-well-known songs, some of which I hadn't heard before, every bit as enjoyable as his many chart-topping hits. Being in Australia I was unfamiliar with all of the singers, and liked their interpretations.
I loved hearing Hal David's lyrics all over again, and admire their content as well as the way that words and music blend so well, in both slow-tempo and fast-tempo songs.
The BBC concert production was excellent, as always. For me the only jarring note was that the host at times came across as rather loud and a bit overpowering (compared with the softly-spoken maestro).
