Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area (2022)
Come on, It's better than a 5, more like a 6.5 and only because it's a remake
The biggest negative is the fact that people know this is a remake. You can't get it out of your mind. The first episode isn't great. But, actually I finished the series because it was entertaining until the end. And I almost never finish a series. I think if it was more self aware, for example, maybe they were aware of the other Money Heist and literally copied it as a movement or something then it would have played out better.
Seungriho (2021)
Not bad at all for their first sci-fi epic
Considering the scale of this movie, and what they set out to do, I'd say this was a success. It was off, not perfect, and missed often. But overall, very entertaining, impressive, and promising for a whole new film category for South Korea to add to. And they have a lot now. Btw, it's nice to see a variety of countries and languages represented here, not just the usual English only which I find more realistic in a sense. Btw, it is very difficult to incorporate so many different languages and it didn't always work out. But I always thought these futuristic space stories had way too many people from only certain countries ie USA and UK. Star Wars are suppose to be aliens, not even human, far far away and they are still mostly....English speaking white people basically. No one ever thought this was odd? Anyways, looking forward to more sci-fi to come out of South Korea, and other countries for that matter
Joker (2019)
I loved this movie, but couldn't get Taxi Driver out of my mind the whole time
I guess there are 2 experiences. One with never seeing Taxi Driver and one with seeing Taxi Driver. This is probably why most of the top reviews come from younger people who never saw Taxi Driver. That being said, it's a great movie and Joaquin Phoenix is my favorite actor.
Kingdom (2019)
This is a very good series, but the premise alone gives it extra points
The acting is great by everyone. The cinematography is also great. The whole production is great. My only gripe is some of the costumes and perhaps how the zombies behave sometimes. These are very minor issues however.
Moon (2009)
Different and realistic premise for a sci-fi
The overall premise is great, and I think they delivered up to about 70% of its potential. There were some understandable budget constraints, some questionable technology and the split screen acting could have been better. Kevin Spacey's voice is also jarringly normal, although I do like Kevin Spacey very much, I think he or the director could have made him a bit more surreal. If you look at the credits you will be impressed just how few were in it, and after all it is just one guy pretty much in a room and that is tough to do for 2 hours. So I give a lot of credit to that alone.
Marco Polo (2014)
Takes awhile but eventually becomes very good
Do yourself a favor and don't compare this to Games of Throne. You may actually like it. I really didn't like the first episode but after some time the characters, the plot and performances hit their stride. I also think it's great that Hollywood put something like this out there. How can anyone not be interested, it is so different and unique in every way. I feel like they are just starting to scratch the surface with this series. And there are some much to say about Kublai Khan, his reign and what happened.
I don't think it's fair to compare this to Games of Throne, in fact, I think it's simply absurd. I can only imagine why some people do. This is more like Spartacus (S1, S2) where you take a real historic figure and history and make it into a made for TV series and yes you create drama and situations for the sake of the story. And yes, like Spartacus, everyone speaks in English accents, this is how all historical movies are done these days regardless of their culture. Even pure fantasy movies now are done with English accents.
My favorite performances are from Benedict Wong and Joan Chen. I always enjoy watching power couples scheming and plotting their moves.
The only gripe I have is the way they designed the set of Kublai Khan's court, it looks too similar to GoT's court which is just annoying.
