The Continental (2023)
Lacklustre
Was really looking forward to this but on viewing was left with a lacklustre feeling from the end of the first episode. I feel the pacing and script could have been much tighter in a 60 minute episode rather than it's current length but more importantly some of the casting choices especially with the lead- glaringly is the difference in accent between the younger and older Winston, which makes no sense.
There's also a leaning into the 70s "blackspoitation" which could have been a choice if the entire show was hyper satirical but isn't so feels strange. Hopefully it improves but seems unlikely.
Tara vs Bilal (2022)
Good concept but
I'm currently watching this on Netflix and while the base concept it great and the lead actress- the actor playing Bilal is just terrible! I'm not sure what's worse- his over the top hair, the inconsistent British accent that obviously switches to huge Indian accent or the general over acting?
Having said that I'm still enjoying this and hope to see more from this director & writing team and the lead actress cast- she has such a Nargis Fakri vibe but with better acting!! Ha!
On a separate note the look/ feel of this movie with use of natural lighting and soft colour colour grading is a welcome change to the sea of psychedelic Karan Johar colours occupying Bollywood right now.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Missed the mark
This could have been much better but the story was convoluted with forced "whacky" comedy which was a stark contrast to the first movie, alongside story points which make no sense. If they had less characters but better developed this could have struck gold. I felt the actors did well with what they were given, which wasn't a lot.
Vikings (2013)
Disappointing
This started off so well for the first 3 or so seasons and gradually became more ludicrous as time passed. The most disappointing of all is the terrible dialogues and acting in the later seasons- for long stretches I was browsing online while leaving it on the background because it's mostly overly stylised filler.
It should have ended with the death of Ragnor.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
The disaster that ruined star wars
It's been two years and after much thought I've concluded that this movie single handed ruined the Star Wars comeback- an ego driven vanity project by Ryan Johnson that is a slap to the face of fans & the previous films. Disappointing & disastrous.
Drive (2019)
Slow & tedious
Literally the worst fast and furious rip off ever made, the cgi is worse than my old 16 bit Super Nintendo and I've seen better acting on Instagram boomerangs. Sushant normally makes good movies but this is WAY off the mark- he needs to be careful if he wants continued support from fans.
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Lacklustre
All the highlights of the movie were revealed in the trailers- even one of the post credit scenes. A fun (but not crucial) film but felt like I've wasted £13 for a movie I've already almost seen & should've waited on Netflix instead.
Story wise it was quite predictable but they had so many potential options unexplored such as using Ned with his IT skills more etc. The highlights were Zendaya and the cinematography of Europe though- beautiful.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Misplaced opportunity
I saw disappointing early reviews but went in on the premier day with an open mind however left feeling.. unmoved!
While most origins movies struggle to some extent, this movie seems to be misplaced especially given the current quality of MCU movies and her reported importance in Avengers Endgame.
Brie Larson did a good job but with poor material- the scenes and dialogues felt corny for the most part and no real threat or emotional highs at all. I do think giving the helm of such an, allegedly, big part of the next MCU phase to two director/ screenwriters who have never made anything other than TV shows before was a risk that hasn't paid off!
The saving grace is the incredible CGI in de-aging Samuel L Jackson which felt seamless- however his character arc wasn't explained i.e. how did he go from being a happy/ optimistic person to how we meet him 10 years later in Iron Man?
The bottom line is most people are watching this because they are fans of the MCU and want to see how this connects with Endgame so it will be a success- however disappointing loyal fans like this has made me cautious to spend £15 again on a disappointing movie when I could happily wait a few months to watch it on streaming for less- a misplaced opportunity for MCU to build up the next phase.
Zero (2018)
Terrible
This movie is as absurd in plot as it is in execution- everything from the script, acting, visual effects and costume are a let down. I regret the two hours of my life I lost watching this farce!
Amanda Knox (2016)
Guilty
Remembering very little from this case growing up- having watched the show I feel zero doubt that Amanda Knox is a murderer: the producers of this show (including Knox herself) should be ashamed of themselves to make more money after getting away with brutal murder.
The fact that the producers were advocates of her innocence since 2011 should also show their bias.
