Game Show with Problems
18 November 2014
Match Game is a Canadian game show which is based on an older game show of the same name from the U.S. and I think it has existed a few times there after being revived in different years. The format is popular and was on for years.

This new (Canadian) version has some problems that take away from the enjoyment of the show, at least in my opinion but that's all I can give you :-)

The jury... I don't recognize most of them and don't know how they cast for this show but almost down to the last person they're just not funny. They rely almost 100% of the time on obvious "dirty" answers thinking that making sexual or scatological references will be automatically funny on their own. This is my main problem with the show. A number of them also seem to be desperate to have their jokes heard and to be seen on TV so they often resort to yelling and talking over each other/the host/contestants which is just annoying and unnecessary. A couple of them even sing all the time which just comes off as desperate.

The host... he's not as bad as the jury but he seems very stiff and for an improvised comedy show he doesn't seem to think on his feet very wittily/quickly. But I bet that stuff could be learnt with time, and let's face it, given how little I think of the jury I bet they are not giving him much to work with :-)

The contestants... they are incredibly boring, or maybe it's just that they are bored themselves and we can see that coming through in their performances.

The prizes... super cheap and it's very difficult to see them win the top prize.

The format is a winner but they just aren't doing anything with it. Just because a format works doesn't mean you can just grab any jury, host and contestants and a camera and offer a $100 cash prize and assume your show will be guaranteed successful.

This show is a major disappointment to me because the original show was very funny and worked on every level, so it's an opportunity really missed by the Comedy Network.

Predictable and Unfunny
15 November 2014
The acting isn't bad and they have had some good guest stars on this show with a lead who is perfectly fine in the role, but I don't like this show.

I think my main problem is with the writing and/or maybe just the type of show and humour it is. I don't understand what they're doing most of the time.

It's very predictable and by that I don't just mean the story, I also mean all of the jokes they do. The story and the jokes are so predictable it actually annoys me. What's the point of watching something so poorly written and predictable that you know everything that's coming before it even happens?

And what is the CBC's fascination with producing shows with eastern Canadians? Why no prime time comedies from the Prairies or BC? Mercer, 22 and a bunch of other shows over the years haven't been enough?

This comedy is pretty lame.

Good for What it is

This show is surprisingly good for what it is (a drama for teenage viewers).

It is nothing special and it does go to the melodrama well a bit much but isn't as close to being a soap opera as other shows from the same time like 90210 or Melrose. The audience is less mature as it is about high school kids.

The actors are all pretty good for their age. This is the show that made Katie Holmes a star although the other actors in it have not done much since, other than Michelle Williams who comes into the show later on.

Joshua Jackson is a good actor who pops up in movies once in a while and is still decent. James Vanderbeek who I guess was the "star" of the show probably suffers the most as he is identified as Dawson, and has not done much since, and what he has done to be honest wasn't that great.

Good adults in the cast as well. The early seasons of this show are great but it goes a bit down the tubes in later years. I also think they relied too much on the romantic triangles between the core cast members, it gets old after a few years.

Bad

I am shocked by this shows rating because I think the average viewer would not find this show very good or interesting at all. I can only assume that the reason for this is that cast and crew are rating it with high numbers. I've seen three episodes of the show and all three were terrible.

It's available on Rogers on Demand and it even for free I wish I could get a refund. The jokes are really bad, I don't mind edgy or dirty and dark material as long as it is funny but this show's jokes just make me groan, not laugh, not even once.

I think maybe the poor acting is part of that too, most of the members of the cast are just terrible.

That's my opinion on this show, couldn't stand it.

Creepy but Wonderful

I'm not surprised that this movie is not as appreciated as I think it should be because it's definitely pretty creepy at times. I think that is deliberate though. The sexual perversions and secrets of the people in the movie as well as the way they all use one another really made me uncomfortable at times. But I think that is part of the point Stanley Kubrick intended to make.

The acting is not perfect but it's very good. I would say it's the best movie Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman ever did. Sidney Pollack is great as the rich, self-centred man.

It's a mystery that's really about love and how relationships last and survive, and "what really matters."

I don't want to spoil anything but visually it's quite stunning as any Kubrick movie is, and I'd point out that this was his favourite film of all the ones he directed so that should be worth something right? :)
