Earthlings (2005)
9/10
Not what you want to watch, it is what you need to watch.
25 May 2024
The power of "Earthlings" lies in its raw and honest portrayal of the conditions animals endure. It's a film that doesn't shy away from showing the grim practices of factory farms, research labs, and slaughterhouses. The footage, often captured through hidden cameras, serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of our choices and the suffering that goes unnoticed.

What makes "Earthlings" particularly impactful is its ability to connect with the viewer on a fundamental moral level. It's not just a documentary; it's a call to action-a plea for empathy and a demand for change. The high ratings are a testament to its effectiveness in conveying a message that is both urgent and necessary. It's a must-watch for anyone who cares about the ethical treatment of animals and the future of our planet.

In summary, "Earthlings" is an eye-opening documentary that earns its high rating by not only revealing uncomfortable truths but also by challenging us to rethink our relationship with the other inhabitants of this Earth. It's a significant piece of filmmaking that deserves to be seen and discussed widely.

A must watch for ecologists, philanthropists and all outdoorsmen and women
31 October 2023
Looking at all the reviews, it certainly is a mixed bag of reviews. And yes, reviews are subjective so everybody to their own. For me, having followed the lives of Doug Tompkins, Yvon Chouinard, Jimmy Chin, Tommy Caldwell, Alex Hannold, etc and having watched The Dawn Wall,Valley Uprising, Free Solo, The Alpinist ( all great doccies) it was just a deeper dive in the psyche of these outdoorsmen. I knew the story before the documentary was made . I was aware and had read The Responsible Company and was further aware that Let Your People Go Surfing by lifelong friend of Tompkins , Yvon Chouinard was compulsory reading for sustainable studies at Cambridge University, all set the stage for this documentary.

So this documentary of the life of Doug Tompkins, with Academy Award winning videographer , Jimmy Chin was beautifully crafted and I loved every moment of it.

I would beg to differ strongly with the naysayers, this is a fitting tribute to a true ecologist , supported by his amazing wife who continues his legacy.

Compelling
12 April 2021
Gritty, raw, thought provoking, sad. Better than I anticipated and added bonus was to find that the bulk of the film was made in Cape Town and surrounds in South Africa ( my home city) . A compelling watch and I was already aware of the injustices in Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp so the story was not a surprise. But the film was beautifully crafted to make this a very personal story in which you could live through the eyes of Mohamedou Ould Salahi ( Fantastically portrayed by. Tahar Rahim). Jodie Foster , as always, gave a stellar performance. Not one person left their seats until the credits had finished being played - I would suggest you do the same. You will understand why. And then give some thought as to what this film is actually saying.

Great reflection of the experience
14 February 2021
Having done the Camino in 2019 and now suffered FOMO due to the Covid pandemic of 2020 , it has been a time to reflect on many things, including and especially how fortunate I was to have done the Camino just prior to a global lockdown.

My understanding is that the 6 people selected were chosen at the time of filming and not limited to just the 6 and the others are on a bonus DVD if you but this documovie.

But certainly a great, and diverse selection of people who really bring the experience to life. Beautifully edited with some sublime videography, you will truly appreciate this if you have done the Camino OR, even better, if you are going to still experience it. I would then recommend you watch this a few times so images can crystalize in your mind. It will not spoil the actual experience as the journey will always be personal to you.

Definitely worth the watch.

I Am Greta (2020)

You be the judge.

Forget the naysayers and the trolls, make up your own mind, and watch. A well balanced documentary giving an insight into the intensity, and laser focus with which somebody with Aspergers lives. As a father and grandfather, I am saddened by the world leaders lack of empathy to Gretha, and even more saddened by their lack of action. But you be the judge.

Brilliant

Absolutely Brilliant. Exquisite footage, beautifully simple, fantastic edit, highly educational, amazing soundtrack and all brought through the lens of a true connection between a human and a very misunderstood creature of the sea. Highly recommend.

Best performance by Reece Witherspoon I have seen.

An authentic film and for me personally, having walked the Camino from France to the west coast of Spain, can fully relate to the cathartic nature of something like this. In fact, I met a woman, very similar story to the role played in the movie which is why I watched it. This film will be enjoyed by any avid hiker for a number of reasons, and I appreciate the essence of the film might be lost on others. For me.. A definite 9/10

Great story of two worthy champions
8 May 2020
Definitely a worthwhile watch. Having followed Daniela Ryf for much of her professional career as triathlete I was keen to watch the comparative styles and mindsets between Daniela as 4x Ironman world champion and Natascha Badmann, 6x Ironman world champion. I think two very private people so this gives a rare glimpse into their lives. As they said in closing, both agreeing to live in the moment and that in itself is a life lesson for all of us.

Visually brilliant / Incredible Talent
25 November 2014
The movie had less to do with James Cameron and more to do with just recording from a number of the awesome show/shows performed by Cirque du Soleil.

If you have ever been mesmerised when watching a movie as to the attention to detail, whether costume design, the music, the choreography, the performances, you need to be aware that what you see in this movie is performed in real time, on a regular basis by the cast and crew of Cirque du Soleil. Having watched Ka in 2012 I was just blown away! James Cameron just captures the scenes so as good as what he is, all credit needs to go to Cirque du Soleil.

If you can watch any of the shows in Las Vegas or when touring then just do it! THEN you will understand why this movie gets a 10 rating from me.

The above forms the cornerstone of the review as there are no special effects- the shows are really THAT good. EVERYTHING is just top drawer. Although the storyline in the movie is predictable the journey through different shows is the closest you will get to watching a live show.
