Spotlight (2015)
Terrific and Tragic
The cast, director, the score..... The list goes on. Every part of this movie is done to perfection, and given the subject matter, it is handled in a very sensible way. Nobody makes excuses and everyone is searching for answers and justice. I flipped by a review of this movie in Empire magazine a while ago, and the rating and star cast caught my eye, but I didn't see it until recently as I had no clue what the reporters were investigating. This movie should be seen by everyone, as the battle to rid the world of this secret society of underground predators rages on. I cannot recommend it enough
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Spiderman Perfectly At Home
He is given the movie of all movies to come into his own, and our hero, the director and the villain don't disappoint. Jake was so good, the nods to the past with the barf and characters, Edith is my favourite acronym/acrostic of all time now. This is Spiderman as he should be, and stick around at the end folks! What the Amazing Spiderman 2 got wrong with visual effects this movie rectifies and improves upon. I was almost reminded of certain scenes involving scarecrow Inthe Arkham games at certain points. Just go see it everyone. He's back, and more important than ever!
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
Rushed, but time traveling aside, great.
I didn't enjoy it at the 2am screening, and have had to go back through the entire series and rewatch this episode another 2 times, and I now know what was missing. The anticipation for next season, there were shocks, plots and characters tied up and settled, genuine fear from Jon I noticed when he was looking at Dany at least once, reminiscent of when Cersei said to Jaime "Are you angry with me? Are you afraid of me". The wheel has been broken, the North has their independence, and Jon is where he belongs, free and anonymous, with nobody to fight and a future ahead. I'd like to see more of that small council haha, but overall, it was a good ending to a great show
Edit : Watching season 6, with Hodor and Bran, the children of the forest and the former raven, Mira and her brother protecting Bran at all costs.....how did I not see this coming. Jon doesn't want to be King in the North, Dany and Cersei want it too much. The truth had to be set straight, and that's why Bran ended up on the Throne......maybe 10 Downing Street can find a three eyed Raven. I get it now mostly, but a season more would have made so much more sense
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
It wasn't that bad...
Yes it does seem as though it's a set up, and there weren't very many "Crimes of Grindlewald", but visually superb, and acted beautifully. Depp surprised me, it's nice to see a villian with a sympathetic motive, and the main cast continue to impress. If you enjoyed the first, give this a chance.
The Disaster Artist (2017)
A Triumph
James Franco once again displays what a versatile actor he is in this adaptation of Greg Sesteros fantastic book.
I am a massive fan of the story, initially viewing The Room led me to research how it came about, and although that movie itself falls short of what Tommy intended, I'm sure he's happy with the cult status and career options himself and Greg have now!
The Disaster Artist movie does simplify some aspects of the book for the screen, but it's forgivable, as the tone and main points are perfect. Both Franco's are superb, especially when you consider James was directing, Rogen is his usual reliable Rogen lol, Efron continues to impress me, nice to see Alison Brie as well because of the genuine chemistry between her and Dave.
I really enjoyed the after credits scene too, because although Tommy's direction was seemingly harsh, he appears to be able to laugh at himself now, which rounds the story off nicely for me.
The score also deserves a special mention, the warm, recurring theme is perfect.
One of my favorite comedies for years
Modern Family: The Escape (2018)
What are the writers doing?
Seriously.... a relative I don't recall being mentioned before, somehow makes characters we have enjoyed on screen for years into the most petty, selfish versions of themselves ever, and the recurring sideshow of Phil, Cam and Gloria being "stupid".... it's lazy, boring and not fun to watch. If the standard doesn't pick up by the end of this season I doubt I will continue watching, leave myself with at least the earlier seasons to enjoy before the show is ruined for me.
