Khazanchi (1941)
a reflection of per independence India culture
i bought Khazanchi video as it was written on front cover that it starred Rajendra Kumar (the tragedy prince of60's) and Shashikala(the glamorous garrulous heroine of the 60's).
when i saw it i was amazed it was actually a 1941 film Khazanchi which actually starred S.D.Narang,Ramola,Manorma and Jankidas (the world no.1 cyclist who participated in Olympics).it was made in India in undivided Punjab's capital in Lahore before partition.produced by Puncholi art pictures.music by Ghulam Haider and dialogs and lyrics by Wali.dialogs are good by Wali.recorded on R.C. A. sound system .the picture quality on Eagle was quite bad but watchable, what was irritating were lots of advertisement in between.also picture length was less than 2 hours when actually it was 171 minutes.
it starts with a song which you can still hear on radio "Saawan Ke Nazare Hain" and the song ends with the collision of a group of cycling girls and another group of cycling boys.
the "Diwali song" and "Ek Kali Nazon Me Pali" are good others are a little dated.film has funny and witty dialogs.its a very sweet very nice film showcasing Indian culture and way of living in per independence India.film star-rs S.D. Narang in lead who is a mix of Dilip Kumar and Gregory Peck.now its 5 rupees bus fare for the shortest distance then it was just 3 Anna's.his sister Asha played by Manorma (Who twenty years later was playing the fat, comic and evil lady of Indian cinema whom you can see in classic films like "Bahoron Ke Sapne" and Caravan) sings on the radio.
now S D Narang's package changes with the package of Madhuri played by Ramola at a shop ,ladies undergarments changed for chest expander.this mistake bring them closer.Narang's father Shadilal who works in a bank in Lahore has to go to Bombay for some bank work.
Madhuri has a nice fat slightly crippled father Lala Durgadas played by Durga Mota .his servant takes him outside for fresh air and takes his hands off the wheelchair .Lala Durgadas left at the bridge on a wheel chair while dozing of, his wheelchair slides down the road and he was just going to be crushed by a car when S D Narang saves him.
Shadilal checks into a hotel in Bombay .a clever vile characterless mischievous women Tarawati is also staying in the hotel trying to catch a prey in her net.she dresses attractively in latest fashion does plays on stage.
Shadilal takes out money from the bank.Tarawati intercepts him and takes him to a night club.a foreign dancer in scant clothing is dancing there Shadilal being a conservative man closes his eyes before this nudity.Tarawati makes him drink lots of wine.later she steals money from him.when she is just leaving ,Tarawati gets killed by her two male accomplice who try to snatch money from her.when shadilal wakes up he finds himself with a dead body and all money stolen.
the Tribune headlines" Khazanchi Kills Actress".Shadilal runs away from law wanders here and there becomes like a beggar.he changes so much that his son couldn't recognize him.when his father comes at his doorstep he gives him food to eat .he has now become an advocate.
his sister (Manorma) gets sick on diwali.she catches fire with diwali Dian when worshiping Tulsa .her beggar father saves her.
Madhuri writes a letter to elope and run away.Narang refuses to do so as their family name is already maligned and this will just make it worse.his father gets caught and he is the prosecuting attorney.meanwhile tribune reporter (Janki Das) stumbles upon important facts regarding stage actress murder.but is caught by the miscreants who hide him in far off village.he manages to escape and after some heart stopping stunts manages to reach court. narang's father get acquitted.and happiness returns to their family.
its a miracle that i found this film very few films of per 48 are available it was about a time when India didn't had such large population roads were lined with lush green trees.people were nice and courteous. a tale of days gone by a film reflecting its period.a lovely film a entertaining film.acting direction music all is top class.the print may be bad the film isn't.
Sharabi (1964)
a lovely classic film still very fresh and spellbinding.
Harmesh Malhotra the director of such blockbusters as Nagina and Dulhe Raja is assistant director of this Film.Rajinder Krishan is the lyric writer.Madan Mohan is the music director.Rajrishi is the director .
it has good songs ,the melodious "Sawan Ke Mahine Mein" sung by Mohd. Rafi, two mischievous song "Jao Ji Jao"."Tum Ho Haseen Kahan Ke".others are "Mujhe Le Chalon","Kabhi Na Kabhi" and "Do Do Haath".
Sharabi(1964) is Madhubala's last film she died in 1969 though another of her film Jwala with Sunil Dutt was released after her death 7 years after Sharabi was released.
its an excellent film with a well written script which brings on celluloid the life of an alcoholic played by Dev Anand.he does complete justice to his part infusing life in his character rising above the script and giving the role something of his own,a hallmark of any great actor.
Lalita Pawar plays the alcoholic's mother.she portrays her role powerfully bringing to life her character.a strong willed mother who desperately wants her son to change, to give up booze and to lead a normal life.this is definitely one of her best roles besides Anari's Mrs D'Souza.her confrontation scenes with Dev Anand are great and quite emotionally exhausting.a mother who loves her son too much but has to be strict to change his drinking habit.
Madhubala as always is heartwarming and immensely beautiful.she is superb in this film, one of her best and a very different film from her earlier ones.she is in love with the alcoholic (Dev Anand).after his father's death he promises his mother he will not drink.he took up work in Madhubala's father's office.spring is again smiling on them.they are soon engaged to be married.meanwhile his mother goes away for a day.he gets extremely painful alcoholic pangs and drinks wine.his mother gets upset when she finds him in drunk state.he again takes to alcohol.his mother can no longer see his degradation and leaves.Dev Anand in his drunk state creates a scene outside Madhubala's home.her father gets furious seeing him like this bringing his name to shame. he breaks off engagement.
Dev Anand follows his mother to a coal mining village.Madhubala's father dies and she also reaches there in search of him.alcoholic's mother think of her as her own daughter asks her to stay.Dev Anand never gives up drinking and his mother asks him to leave.also at the bar when his mother breaks his booze bottle he gets extremely mad and tries to strangle her.
in his state of intoxication he reaches his place of work, the coal mine field.there they break coal rocks with explosive materials.he is given the work of blasting the coal rocks.he sets the blast at the wrong time when lots of people are working in the mine.there are many casualties ,his mother who has taken work in the mine as a daily laborer gets badly hurt.Dev Anand goes to jail.next day he takes permission to see his mother at the hospital.his heart shatters when he discovers that because of his carelessness his drunk state his own mother has lost both of her legs.film ends with him going away to the prison.
a very realistic and an entertaining film bringing to fore the evil of alcoholism.how a human being becomes a devil when he is drunk.how it ruins not one life but several others.a lovely classic film still very fresh and spellbinding.
Zindagi (1964)
a movie par excellence greatest flawless classic

its a unique story a well written script which follows a boy in his teens through his youth to adulthood, through love and despair through peace and war.it follows the life of an Indian girl who stands by her lover in times of distress and despair, who fights her own father and follows her lover to the mouth of death.a superb classic directed by Mohan Kumar.

Howrah Bridge (1958)
the pinnacle of mutably magic
Howrah Bridge is a film where Madhubala is at her glamorous best.her song from the film '"Aaiye Meherban "is the best pictures song of her,she is so ravishingly beautiful .this song is sung by Asha Bhonsle who was asked to sing it in Geeta Dutt's style.and it came out wonderfully.
