Reviews
Girl (1998)
So maybe I'm too depressed but...
the outcome of happiness in this movie really didn't do it for me. The film tried to be a teen movie that deals with issues that a teenager will face in high school. But, the reality, is that this movie says: you're friend might commit suicide, or have massive sexual escapades, but in the end it will all be alright, which is not true. Not only did bad acting bad, but the story lacked in substance as well. I mean, it had potential. If they would had focused on a little more on her relationship with her parents on the subject of her virginity, I would spare the film, but they don't. I might be too realistic, but, no good father (which is what the film set up) would allow his daughter to just go out every night to sleep with some guy she has a crush on, and the fact that he did nothing when he knew was a major point of stupidity on the film-maker's part. But as I said before, the fact that everyone in the movie "needed" the main character so much killed me. Her drugy lesbian friend, Tara Reid (still half true), really made me mad for some reason, oh, now I remember it was that little make out session. Wow. How utterly stupid.
Rock School (2005)
Its like VH1 was asking how they could completely rip "The School of Rock" off and make it into a series...
I admit, I like this show. It's Great. Gene Simmons teaching a bunch of English formalists how to rock? Awesome. Thats when I asked myself why I liked this, only one thing came to mind: "The School Rock." This show is a complete clone of the film, with a "reality TV" twist.
In the first episode, Gene gives the kids CDs and CD Players as homework, just as Jack Black did. Later the kids will participate in a concert, just as in the movie. I know, you get the point...
Basically, if you liked "The School of Rock," you'll love "Rock School," because you loved "The School of Rock." Soon, you'll find it quite predictable, but its still fun, and as cool as reality TV can get. Screw eating bugs.
Xing fu shi guang (2000)
A Masterpiece of Chinese Cinema
I wish my films could capture the mellowness of Zhang's "Happy Times." The film follows a 50 year-old single man looking for love in all the wrong places. As old as that sound, "Happy Tims" makes it new again. Finally, he finds, what he thinks will be, his future wife. This very large woman as a son and a blind girl left with her, from her former boyfriend's former relationship. The girls father fled away looking for money. The woman wants the girl out of her home, so the bachelor takes her in as a worker in his fake massage parlor. This sounds horrible, taking advantage of a blind girl, but you realize it's mostly for good reason.
The cinematography is excellent. From the beautiful country-side to the big city, Zhang knows a thing or two about cinematography. If feels like a classic Asian film. I think most people will enjoy this more than "Hero" or "House of Flying Daggers." It has this mellowness and freedom that other films don't capture. You feel the connections between the characters, and the Ending will rock your world.
I only docked it because it's not for everyone. It's an artsy film. It's not Hero. It's not House of Flying Daggers. No fights. No swordplay. Just a raw bittersweet heart-warmer (NO! not a chick Flick!)
