Brightburn (2019)
I can take it or leave it...
It refreshing spin to the superhero genre, but not that refreshing i guess... It was meidocre at best. The performances of the father and the guy from Breaking Bad i found really good, the other actors were ok (there is a lot of crying without tears type of acting).
The cinematography was fine and nothing special. Some sequences were handheld and were edited and directed in a way film student would. There were barely any interesting shots.
The effects at times weren't the best, but all around it was believable.
The film wasn't scary too. Just panning or cut shot in which something apears in front of the charecter and when she/he looks away and looks back there's nothing there... there weren't that many jumpscares which is a plus i guess.
At times it was violent and i think the gore factor added to the movie and i didn't expect that at all.
There were a lot of cheesy and stupid momments in which the characters explain things to the audience, because the writers think we're stupid, but you can see some things a mile away, although i would have to say it wasn't that predictable as i thought it would be.
We're introduced to this black fat kid who bullies the main charecter and you expect they would do something with him, but they forgot he existed in the second half so his inclusion in the movie was pointless.
It was dissapointing movie, but i'll not try to stop you from watching, you may like it. I just found it boring at times and not that interesting. For a concept like that you would expect a little bit more but i look at the movie and see missed opportunity.
The Confession Tapes (2017)
Outrageous and riveting!
Very interesting true crime docu-series. It's a real eye-opener and has a clear message that is usually unheard. From a documentary stand point, it did its job well enough to be stuck in my mind for a long time. It goes in depths explaining the crimes, the sloppy police work and the psychological impact of the authority figure.
It is absolutely outrageous in what lengths would the police go to blame innocent people only so they can be the hero in the eyes of the media and the community and the tax payers could pat them on the back for the good work. But let's not forget... Innocent peoples lifes are wasted in prison because authorities are arrogant and lazy enough to blame them for something that someone else who walks freely did. What if it was you?
The Nun (2018)
Pretty average...
I really like The Conjuring Universe. The first Conjuring i think it works on some levels, but at the end it's just another film about a family moving in a creepy old possesed house. The second one i think is the best of all. It had a great story, creative scares and all around great atmosphere and good characters. The first Anabelle is trash, the second one i would say is a little above average. It had something to offer, but it wasn't horror triumph.
And now we come to the spin-off to the great The Conjuring 2 with the creepy nun Valak. I wasn't very excited about that movie, although a saw it based on what James Wan did as a producer with his other movies, the Nun as a character as i found her very effective in The Conjuring 2 and all around just because i am a horror fan.
I am very dissapointed to say that this movie was painfully average and boring. It's very repetitive. A shadow! Lets follow it through the dark hallways with a candle. Boo, jumpscare. That's the whole film. At one point it just became a cliched exorcism jesus-christ-yelling extravaganza.
It had great atmosphere, good acting, some great shots and visual effects, but that's all. It felt really formulated by the book as it has nothing much to offer to the genre.
Ricky Gervais: Humanity (2018)
One of the best stand up comedies i've ever seen!
Humanity from the legend Ricky Gervais is one of my favourite stand up comedies i've ever seen. You should go on Netflix and watch it right now and you won't regret it. With its dark humour and amazing jokes this is easily the best in recent years. It is hilarious i cried my eyes out of laughing!
Kidnap (2017)
Excellent thrill ride!
What does it take to make a good thriller? Suspense, to feel the tension, to give you the chills. And this movie did that in the right way! Don't get influenced by subjective people who walked of the movie after the first 10 minutes!
If you love good flicks that give you goosebumps and mainly love thrillers, this is the perfect movie for you. Watching the trailer I was expecting mediocre movie, but what I got was way above that. It reminded me of another Halle Berry's thriller - The Call from 2013 which was very good too.
I can't say it's a perfect film, it has it's flaws. There is only one "what happened to that" moment. You know, when some questions aren't answered, but it wasn't that big of a deal at all.
Halle Berry's stellar and compelling performance definitely sells the character of a suffering mother trying to safe her kid's life. The other actors did pretty good job too.
The film pushes the right buttons to make you feel the suspense in the whole run time. It surely deserves 10/10!
Bodom (2016)
Just another boring clichéd teen slasher orgy!
I guess if there is a tragic accidents or murders, we'll have movies about them. This isn't exactly what happened in Lake Bodom in 1960 and the action in the movie takes place in modern days. This is another attempt at the horror genre to make film with the same plot as almost every other slasher. I was kind of excited to see non-American film from this genre and i was hoping for a cool foreign movie outside of the Hollywood norms and tropes, which i got with movies like "The Martyrs", "High Tension", "Vertigo", "Rec", "Train to Busan" etc, but this is just the Finnish version of "Friday the 13th", just call it "Crystal Lake" and get over with it. If you want to watch new good horror watch "Split" or "Get Out", not this.
My "hopes" were crushed when i got to the plot, which is totally overused and boring. Guess what was the first jump scare! Yeah... their friend popping out of nowhere. Guess what was the second jump scare! Yeah
a tree branch falling. Cliché after cliché after cliché. And don't get me wrong... i don't mind a good old jump scare that much if it's done right, look at movies like "The Conjuring", "Insidious" etc, they're making it the right way. And they put personal drama in one of the characters, which is totally misplaced. The tone is often off and on, at one time we have "suspense" moment, of course the background sounds, should tell you that, because you can't feel a real tension and then we cut back with this stupid backstory, because I guess, we have to give a motive for the group of people being in the woods.
And don't even let me start with the characters... emotionless and flat. If you are making them that way, make them at least a little bit different... but hey, why should we have characters that are not trivial? Jerk - check, slut - check, harassed shy girl - check, dumb decisions made by them - check! Of course the bad acting did not contributed. If you are lost in the forest, one of your friends was brutally murdered and there is probably a serial killer, which is after you... maybe you should panic a little bit, not just walking around, talking for normal day drama. What were the director and the writer thinking? "Hey, we have a twist. Well that makes the movie a whole lot better, right?" Twist, which is very dumb, because in order to try something new, they fail and which is explained 20 minutes. "Why the twist should be shocking and interesting when it can be stupid and not well executed?".
So
the script was poor, the acting sucked, as well as the idea, because it's overused. At least make it over the top fun. I wanted the movie to end after the 20th minute, but i watched it to the end anyway. Boring, lifeless and doll movie that is cliché to it's core. If something distinguishes it from the other indie-slashers is the camera work, which isn't great but it wasn't that bad and this is the best this movie has to offer. If you are bored out of your mind even before the half run time of the movie hasn't passed, something isn't right. 2/10
Holidays (2016)
You should give it a try!
This is one of the best anthology films I've ever seen. There is something really special about it. Maybe the idea, maybe the story – I don't know. But you should give it a chance. It reminded me of ABC's of death(which sucked balls), but it's way way better. I was really surprised that Thanksgiving wasn't included, but however it's pretty descent movie to watch. Of course not every "short horror film" about holiday in this film is good enough, but most of them are.
Valentine's Day – it totally grabbed me. The atmosphere in this one is something very different and i don't know, amazing I would tell. The culmination was the point that I knew the movie will be good one or another kind of way – 10/10 St. Patrick's Day – Ehhh
that wasn't so good at all. Too much bullshit and it was kind of boring – 3/10 Easter – Well
this part is cool. (Spoiler alert – Jesus Bunny surprisingly doesn't look funny, just creepy). Exactly how it must be. – 9/10 Mother's Day – I can say the same for this one. I couldn't really understand the story, but I understand one thing – it definitely do not liked it – 5/10 Father's Day – This part was mind-blowing awesome. Somebody really burned the midnight oil for it. I would like to see full-length movie about that story. They HAVE to do that – 10/10 Halloween – Kevin Smith? Why not. I like revenge horrors and this one wasn't scary at all, but it's nicely done – 9/10 Christmas – what we have here
original idea? Of course. Modern technologies + horror film = not cool(for me), but it's not bad at all – 7/10 New Year's Eve – Spoiler alert! Psychopath vs psychopath – it look like my kind of thing – 9.5/10.
