The Sandman (2022)
I love it probably because I don't know the comic books
I have never read any of the Sandman comic books but now I am eager to buy all of them. I consider myself very lucky because I love this show. I love its special effects, the imaginary translation to the screen. It hits the spot. I feel like it's made for me. I love the slow pace it takes. Episode 5 titled 24/7 is one of the best episodes of anything I have seen in a while now. With super cringe awful mess coming from Disney+ and all the worries of Tolkien's fans about Amazon's upcoming LOTR TV series, this show is a breath of fresh air.
Try not to pay attention to the critics who rely heavily on the comics mythos. Just tune in and forget that it's based on comic books. If you watch this show with clean slate, not knowing any of the characters before the first episode, you might enjoy it the same way as I did.
That's kind of a problem sometimes with comic book / novel adaptations on small or silver screen. The expectaions are too high. Fans of the originals expect the show or feature film to be a copy of the comic book. But that makes no sense. Why would anyone copy the exact same thing without adding anything from their own imagination? It's a creativity killer.
Unless it doesn't shove any policital agenda/views aggressively, a screen translation of a novel or comic book should in my opinion be different as much as the creators of such like. Give it a try. I think it's a masterpiece considering how many flops and cancellations Netflix had in recent years.
Superman & Lois (2021)
I had to check if it went to HBO or is it still a CW production
I am not a fan of CW superhero tv series since Smallville production was taken by this network after WB TV and UPN merged. I liked the first season of Arrow but other stuff - I was never into it. But this... This is something different. Fantastic score gives every scene the PROPER - for me at least - Superman vibe - not just the hopeful vibe but kind of a darker tone too. Something close to a sci-fi atmosphere. It's hard to explain. It just fits perfectly and is enriching the show. The conclusion of the first episode wasn't hard to figure out. I was only waiting for it to happen but it's fine. It shows a lot of today's world problems and it "hits the spot" with showing them. I would say that the world looks very realistic. I only don't like the costume that much. I hope they will improve it. The upper part - near shoulders and neck doesn't look natural for Tyler Hoechlin. I didn't feel any excitment seeing him in that costume. But it's the least of problems or may I say - the only that I had with the first episode. Of course it will stick for the rest of the series but I hope they will really improve it for the second one. The show looks promising and I think it's taking a little bit from Smallville's first few seasons. I am curious what will happen to Kent's sons. And that is the most important thing when watching a show - it leaves you with wanting to know what will happen next. Don't want to give any details about the story but I hope that the hero part will only be Clark's part if you know what I mean. I don't want this to turn into another pseudo-Justice League flick. It's a show about Superman and let it be about THE Superman and his wife Lois Lane - THE one and only - Clark Kent, the one and only Lois Lane. Good job. It's nice that it's on HBO GO.
The Affair (2014)
Perfection all the way - little SPOILER ALERT
I never thought I would ever see a TV show that is a pure art and with finally an ending that is not a cliffhanger. Everything about it is perfect and I thank the whole crew - cinematographers, directors, creators, writers and mostly the actors for making this with a rewarding - also worth mentioning - ending. A very rewarding and hopeful ending. This show calms my nerves and makes me wanna be better. Noah Solloway and Helen Solloway are my favorite movie characters. Till I saw this, it was always Agent Cooper and Sheriff Truman. That has changed. A pleasant surprise. Thanks Showtime for giving me this.
