Extended Family (2023)
Great cast--- but not funny
When are the execs going to realize that adding a laugh track does not make something funny. When are the execs going to realize that laugh tracks turn many watchers off. When are the execs going to realize that viewers can determine for themselves if a TV show is comedic.
Some of my favorite shows do not have laugh tracks. How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs (you should have known better, Donald Faison), New Girl, and a few others. They don't need them because they are actually funny. When the execs add one it shows they have zero confidence in the material.
This show is not funny. It was actually disappointing.
Dan in Real Life (2007)
Really good movie, but the soundtrack...eek gads.
I have watched this movie a few times, as I am a big fan of Steve Carrell, and I really feel it was well done. The castbis great.... the chemistry between S. C. and Juliette Binoche was spot on. I enjoy every aspect of this movie... except... the soundtrack is awful (other than the song S. C. does with Dane Cook). I am a music snob, and there may be many who enjoy the indie music featured in the movie.
My dog ate the remote to the sound bar, so I was unable to mute it... sad for me.
Anyway... great movie, but if you dislike whiny songs by people who seem to have the inability to sing on key (or if you have the ability to utilize a mute button), so watch it!
The cast and story get an 8.
Soundtrack gets a 2.
A Christmas Story Christmas (2022)
Heartwarming with a side of nostalgia
I really did enjoy this movie--- mainly because how great it was to see a lot of the original cast. I missed Melinda Dillon, and though Julie Haggerty was okay, it wasn't the same. I loved seeing Randy (Ian Petrella -sp?). He was always my favorite. "I can't put my arms down!"
I didn't find this movie to be overly sweet, but at the end, I was moved. The Old Man story was really touching.
Another great part of this movie is that the music was the same... everything in this movie reminded me why the original movie is so amazing and is a yearly tradition in my home.
If you want to see Ralphie, Flick, Schwartz, and even Scut Farkus (his eyes were yellow!) it really is a nice trip down nostalgia lane.
The Rookie (2018)
Room for improvement
First off, I would watch Nathan Fillion tie his shoes for an hour. He's the reason I still watch the show... well, I've grown to love Chen and Bradford, too... but the amount of medical snafus in this show are getting ridiculous. They need to get someone with a medical background to consult for the show. Sheesh... this last episode, Tim Bradford has back surgery after a dislodged bullet fragment makes him paralyzed and is back at work the following week? Someone in a car accident doesn't immediately get put into a c- collar? And why is Jenna Dewan at EVERY medical scene?? She's the worst EMT ever! Isn't Los Angeles bigger than that? Anyway, the acting is good... just fix the medical inaccuracies. Its.
Coupling (2000)
The funniest show ever
If you are looking for actual laughs from a TV show, this is the one. The cast is brilliant (especially Jeff) and the writing is so on point. If it's Steve's rants or sexual conversations at a funeral, this show really does encompass it all. No topic is taboo, and that's a great thing. This series really is brilliant and I always laugh out loud (many shows don't bring out my hearty guffaws). American shows with their laugh tracks and lame jokes are okay if you live here.
The British really have this comedy thing perfected.
P. S. If you really want to see the brilliance, watch the episode The Man With Two Legs.
I just wish the series had gone on longer. Not one bad episode! Watch it and thank me after.
Into the Woods (2014)
An amazing version
I own the Bernadette version of the stage musical, and was involved in a local theater rendition, and this comes pretty close. I gave it a 9 because I missed some of the songs like One Midnight Gone, etc. But the cast impressed me. All their voices were great, and Chris Pine's version of Agony was quite comical, though I did miss the reprise.
Don't listen to the Negative Nellies. It's a Disney musical. Duh.
I know this show and I didn't want to see the film version for soooooo long.... glad I did.
Joker (2019)
Worst characterization of the Joker
I cannot understand for the life of me why people praise this movie. I wanted to walk out of the theater so many times, because I was so bored. All the man did was laugh ridiculously and for far too long. Slow moving and terrible acting by the lead, the only redeeming quality was Robert DeNiro and the last ten minutes when the action started. And then it was over. Thank God.
Lone Star State of Mind (2002)
If you want a laugh
This movie was so funny! I don't know who made me laugh more, DJ Qualls (who is great in everything he's done) or Ryan Hurst. Joshua Jackson playing the straight man to these two also did an amazing job. It was not thought provoking but if you need a laugh, it's a great flick.
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser (2018)
You guys ever been there?
You know, I've read your 1/10 reviews and I find it harsh. You all must have been popular and beautiful, but speaking as someone who was always on the outside looking in, this movie spoke to me. I've been there, and it hurts. From some things you just don't bounce back.
Yeah, and the story isn't about catfishing. It's a retelling of Cyrano
de Bergerac...
Ponder this movie from the loser's perspective.
The Book of Henry (2017)
The acting of Jaeden Lieberher....
...was just phenomenal. I liked the movie, I cried through the movie, but Jaeden Lieberher gave this movie extra stars. So well acted, and amazingly talented, I missed him for the whole second act.
The rest of the cast was rather good (Jacob Tremblay who played his brother, Peter, was also a very engaging actor), but Jaeden sold it. I look forward to seeing more of his movies.
Glass (2019)
James McAvoy is the man!
I am a huge fan of James McAvoy, but this movie thrusts him into a whole new dimension.
As I was watching him reacting to the doctor who told him he had no special abilities, a myriad of expressions crossed his face. The camera was close up and you could read fear, disbelief, sadness and pain etched on his perfect face.
He also conveyed all the different personalities and I sat in wonder at this talented man.
Et cetera.
Literally, Right Before Aaron (2017)
Awkwardness all around.
Why would you go to an exes dinner party/wedding and think, this won't be weird.
People are constantly pointing out that you are single and that you let the best girl get away. It's constantly thrown in his face, and I kept hoping he would just walk away. But he didn't, and too many awkward conversations made me turn it off.
Could have saved the hour I put into it if he had just said no to the invite.
A much shorter movie....
Or not one at all.
