1923 (2022)
Another brilliant Yellowstone spinoff
Dame Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. Sounds like a winning recipe. And it is. The Duttons are once again struggeling to keep their way of farmlife in Montana. The patriarch, (Harrison Ford) Jacob Dutton, is fighting pretty much the same battles as John Dutton (Costner) did in Yellowstone. Very entertaining.
There are two other very interesting archs to the story. One is Spencer Dutton. A disillusioned WW1 veteran. Now a hunter in Africa. Spencer meets an english girl whom he liked. Suddenly those two learned that they had to travel from Mogadishu in Somalia to Montana. Should be easy...
The second arch is told from a school where native American girls are abused by catholic priests and nuns. That part was highly unpleasant to watch. There was a bit of revenge going on there that made it somewhat watchable...
I normally rate TV shows after 1 season. Not this time. I did not like the last episode. Explaining why would meen spoiling. But I'm going to watch season two. I have to...
F9 (2021)
Meh
I just watched the entire franchise. F9 felt like a big letdown. Almost like someone lost traction and drove their vehicle into a ditch.
A long lost brother of Dominic Toretto shows up. (Another big guy. John Cena.) And, unfortunately, he is bad. I didn't quite get what he was up to, but it was definetly something really bad. And Cipher (Charlize Theron) is back. In red leather pants inside a weird cage.
The car driving in the franchise have always been on the other side of ridiculous. But fun to watch. So what did they come up with this time? Driving in space...
The screenwriting seems disjointed. The action sequences are nuts. Over the top nuts.
Having watched all of them it was worth checking out F9 too. But I will not watch it again.
Alaska Daily (2022)
Nice. Very nice.
8/10. In between all the entertaining CGI stuff and other "gettin' their heads blown off" series this was a pleasant surprise.
Good story telling. There's a little bit of "Northern Exposure" feeling to this. New York journalist, Eileen Fitzgerald/ Hilary Swank, moves to Anchorage where she joins a much smaller working environment than she is used to.
There are some smaller and nice story arcs going on that entertained me. Some very likeable and interesting characters.
The main storyline is about missing women in Alaska. And how politicians and law enforcement deals (or rather not) deals with it.
I had a good time watching it. A pleasant watch.
Travelers (2016)
My review is from the present timeline
I watched this recently knowing that the show got cancelled after season 3. It feels a bit sketchy to start watching shows that has been cancelled. The last thing you need to find out on the internet is that a show you want to check out was left with a cliffhanger...
Travelers was wrapped up relatively well. And it did not deteriorate. I had great fun watching it. Great characters. Story well written even though it seems borderline chaotic at times. Timetravelling paradoxes tend to do that. 8/10.
Yellowstone (2018)
From the Great state of Montana
Loved it. Great show. I've been hesitent to check out Yellowstone. I erroneously thought that a western show from present time with Kevin Costner would be a bit too nice and cosy. I was wrong.
Great shows often have a protagonist that you love to hate. Or vice versa. The JR of Yellowstone is definetly Beth Dutton. (Kelly Reilly.) Great fun to watch her. Glad she's not a rl person I know.
1883 (2021)
Almost brilliant
I dove straight into this having finished the brilliant "Yellowstone".
I thought 1883 was absolutely fantastic from the get go. Loved the scenery. The filming. And the storytelling from the wagon trail.
About halfway through the series the "Elsa Dutton" character took over the show a bit too much for me. What a shame. 1883 came close to perfection.
Anyway... A very good watch.
Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted: Norway's Viking Country (2020)
Rakefisk
Great fun to see Gordon Ramsay way up in that country that I live in. Cool "duel" with a clever chef from Bergen.
Ramsay seemed to have a good time. But he failed miserably to enjoy rakefisk. It was not served right. He ate it out af a slimy and stinky bucket. That's not how it's done.
Anyway, Good TV. I enjoyed it.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
The Brit of Easttown
I was bored near the end of the first episode. Picked it up a few days later when I was in the mood. Got sucked in. A great show. Clever scripting. Felt like I was tossed around in the "whodunnit"-department.
And now I'm gonna google for a talkshow or an interview with Kate Winslet just to make sure that she is allright. A phenomenal performance from her.
Dopesick (2021)
Very well done
Reviewers often tends to go straight to the content of the scripting and voice their opinion about it. When I read reviews I just like to know if the show is good...
Well. This is one of the good ones. I loved it. Easily one of the top ten shows I've ever seen. It's not a popcorn-show. It's about drug-pushing from a pharmaceutical company into local communities via local doctors. Shown from both ends.
Weird that such a topic entertained me. But it did. Michael Keaton is always good. Here I thought that he outdid himself. Excellent performance from him. And allaround a great cast.
Ex Machina (2014)
One to remember
I rated this eight 5 years ago. Just watched again. Gave it a ten after the second watching. I got completely immersed in it the second time around. This is not a forgettable movie. Well... It took me 5 years.
There are no car chases here. No guns are fired. It's not fast. But it's very interesting and thought provoking. And it looks good. A very good looking, smart, and stylish movie.
I enjoyed to read some well written reviews here from people who found the movie a bit flawed. They are not necessarily wrong. But I think they are missing the mark a bit. This is a gem. In my opinion.
I Am Mother (2019)
Smart movie
I just watched this for the second time. My first rating here was a seven. Upgraded it to a nine after second watching. This is one of those flicks you wanna talk about after watching it. It's a bit confusing. But everything comes together nicely in the end. It all makes sense.
The film looks a bit fenced and closed in. The budget was probably not very high. But it looked good. Very good.
And somewhat irrelevantly: I think this is the first movie i've ever seen without any dudes in it.
Ted Lasso (2020)
Moodbooster
This show is very pleasant to watch. It's funny. And it's well done. Three minutes and ten seconds into the show Ted Lasso/Jason Sudeikis' mustached face pops up on the screen. By then you know exactly what you're in for. A good time.
Vilas: Serás lo que debas ser o no serás nada (2020)
You get what you sign up for.
This doc was quite interesting. I grew up with the tennis-rivalry between McEnroe, Borg and Connors. Interesting to learn about where Guillermo Vilas was in that equation. I remembered him just by his name.
This film focus about the fact that Vilas possibly should have reached number 1 on the world ranking. A clever argentine journalist have done a good job here to show that the governating body of tennis made a mistake when Vilas never reached the top spot.
Interesting? Well. It is what it is.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2020)
High-five!
I had to see this subsequent moviefilm in a slightly inebriated state of mind. I didn't wanna watch this sober. But I laughed. And I laughed. Many times. Borat delivered again. I would have given it a higher mark than a 7 if it wasn't for the Giuliani part. That segment felt a bit like an unfair ambush.
Maria Bakalova, however, did great. Kudos to her!
Banshee (2013)
Great Fun
That pretty much sums it up for me. Lots of unrestrained fun. Great actors. Characters that I cared about. Drama. Quite a bit of violence. But not over the top. Well... I didn't think so. I would have toned down the nudity a bit if I was asked to produce season 5. Have not heard from them yet.
The scripting is a bit wild and all over the place sometimes. Lots of stuff seems inexplicably inconsequential. But that's part of the fun.
Banshee did almost escape me. I have it on a streaming service. Didn't know it existed until now. Glad I found it.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
ya ya ding dong
I'm not giving it a perfect score. The film is a bit too long.
I can easily picture Will Ferrel's comedy brain sitting through a Eurovision Song Contest finale with his swedish in laws. Suddenly a light bulb appeares over his head... Let's get to work!
I'm pleasently surprised about how good this movie was. It nailes the craziness perfectly. And the balance between drama and comedy was spot on.
Perfect execution. There's great insight here in how that highly entertaining song contest montrosity works. And it's done with respect.
I love it when I laugh out loud while watching a movie. There's an ufortunate boat incident here that i should have seen coming. But I didn't. I had to press pause after that one...
Watch it! Funny comedies doesn't come along very often.
The Last Dance (2020)
Brilliant
I love sports documentaries. I don't know much about basketball. That sport is next to nothing where I'm from.
But I enjoyed "The Last Dance" a lot. Very well told. The sorting of the archives, the amount of relevant interviewees and the back and forth timeline storytelling worked really well. Loved it!
Shameless (2011)
Filthy, immoral and disgusting.
Had to write a review because I've been watching the darn thing for probably 3 months. I am in the middle of season 8 now. Love it! It's addictive. Good acting. Mostly likeable characters. I found it a bit hard though to watch Franks misadventures in the earlier seasons. But I'll bet whoever's writing this stuff must have had a blast trying to ante up Franks schemes from episode to episode. "Hmmm. He framed his 11 year old son to believing that he had cancer in the last episode. How can we top that?"
I like to google stuff. On top of my head I remember 3 things that I've googled while watching the show:
"Does dogs eat their dead owners?"
"Can you eat eagles?"
"Are there blue people in Kentucky"?
